When I first read this book, I realized I had found a very personal and sensitive resource to share with a friend who was just beginning the journey through breast cancer survival.Dr. Chang's words provided what I did not know myself or did not yet have the courage to offer to my friend. This book gives information that one needs to know about breast cancer.Of equal importance, it captures the whole array of feelings that cancer unleashes on a person.Add this book to your personal collection -- some day you or someone you know will be glad you did.

Her description of her cancer treatment was detailed andrealistic.I could not put the book down!Dr. Chang's emotions andbehaviors during various stages of her treatment were very similar to myexperience undergoing treatment for colon cancer.I think that this bookwill give the average population an awareness of what it is like to havecancer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Memoir, Scrapbook, and Resource Guide--All Rolled Into One
Dr. Alice Chang has written an incredibly moving account of her own bout with breast cancer. The book is truly an inspiration! The parts I like best include first, the conversational tone. Second, Alice models ideal patientbehaviour. I'm taking this book with me next time I visit my physician.Third, she's very methodical in what she reports. I never doubted theaccuracy of her word. Fourth, I really like the photographs. At first Ithought the idea was kind of hokey, but once I looked at them, I quicklychanged my mind. Last, there is a wonderful resource guide for anyonedealing with cancer, either personally or for a loved one. Alice, thank youso much for your more than wonderful work!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible on Chronic Fatigue!
This book is a must for all people who suffer with chronic fatigue andfibromyalgia.I read it slowly, trying to absorb each and every suggestionthat was written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life (For the Better)
My boss bought this book for me, and I thought it was going to be just another, "yeah, you have fibromyalgia and it's a real shame, this is how you cope with it", but instead, this book CHANGED MY LIFE!(Sorryfor the run-on sentence).I had so much pain that some days I couldn't getout of bed.I would find a position that was minimally pain free and notmove until I was better. It got so bad that I had to use a cane so I couldget to work. But I read the book and I couldn't believe the casehistories. But when the pain got so bad that I thought I would lose myjob, I changed my diet (hey, what did I have to lose? ) and low and behold, within a week the pain was gone (I stopped taking pain medicine everyday),the "fog" lifted and I felt better than I had in YEARS!Anotherside benefit, is that I have lost weight! But I recommend this book veryhighly.I will also say that my doctors have pooh-poohed these results, but I firmly believe that what we eat, really effects how we feel.I justnever knew how much!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia sufferer!
If you have or know someone who suffers from fibromyalgia (chronic muscle pain) or chronic fatigue, you absolutely must get this book.Don't waste one more minute, order it now.IT could save your life.Don't believe thenaysayers who tell you that nothing can be done. There is plenty that canbe done. Not all of it will work, but at least you now have a good placeto get started, and techniques that have proven successful for others. Plus the book gives you excellent resources for finding the best doctorsout there to get you well.Any questions feel free to contact me atsrowe@nbn.net

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing that happened to me after I was dignosed at 14
This was probably the best thing hat happened to me just after I was diagnosed with a chronic illness in 2002, at 14. There are no empty words - like "You can't let the disease rule your life" or "It doesn't have to define who you are"- which is exactly the last thing a scared, angry and sad teenager needs. On the contrary, the book shows how much your life may change, that sometimes it won't be easy to be accepted by friends and boyfriends, who might not believe that you're tired or feeling sad or in pain. However for the very first time I understood that there are plenty of people out there who felt just as lost and aprehensive as I did and still managed to be "normal" (feeling just like everyone else is pretty important when we're growing up)and HAPPY! For the first time I didn't have anyone saying that maybe I was going to get better and THEN be happy but that I could have a great life even if I was sick!! The author covers everything from your relationship with your doctors, with your parents (and the different reactions they may have), your social life and even your sex life, all in a Q and A format. She uses the most popular questions teens have to discuss the themes in a sensitive, judge free way. It's totaly worthy!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helping Teens Cope
This book is the best I've seen for teens coping with chronic illness. Since there really is no comparable book written just for teens with IBD, this book should be required reading for teens and young adults that are newly diagnosed or having trouble coping with the difficulties of chronic illness. Dr. Kaufman reaches teenagers' most important concerns through easily understood questions and answers ... Read more

Product Description
As patients and practitioners challenge the very nature of Western medicine, unconventional doctors like the well-known Patch Adams become American heroes. Dr. John Graham-Pole, who has a conventional medical degree and specializes in chronic and terminal illness, is such a doctor. He has sought to humanize the care of patients by introducing the arts - music, dance, painting, theater, writing, puppetry, clowning, and magic - into the hospital setting. In this volume, inspiring stories illustrate how patients engaging in the arts respond better to physical setbacks, are more adept at expressing their emotions, and find more spiritual peace in the midst of their illness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
We are using John Graham-Pole's book in the adult art therapy classes at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC. Patients and staff participants alike have found inspiration and encouragement from the practical - and cheerful - application of creative self-expression to increase patient-staff communication and to reduce stress. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars illness and the art of creative self-expression
This is a unique, easy to read, well written self-help book that teaches the reader practical ways to use "art-making" to achieve greater health and happiness. It is written primarily for the person with a serious health problem, but it is useful reading for professionals caring for seriously or chronically ill persons. It teaches both groups of people how to bring art and self-expression into their lives.

The author has developed exercises to bring out the creative self-exppression each person possesses and to teach people to live for the moment, let go of negative thoughts or the pressure to achieve, and to enjoy the hidden artist within. The author's writing style is appealing because it is so rhythmic, flowing, and conversational that one feels as though one is sitting across from him and conversing. His style is direct and warm, and as one becomes engaged with the text and its exercises for self-expression, one comes away with a deeper understanding of,and a renewed appreciation of, the creative self-expression we all have hidden within us.

The author's writing is optimistic, hopeful, sensitive, and empathic. It is as if he has crawled into the skin of the person with an illness and is able to feel or think what he or she feels and thinks. He presents a holistic, integrated approach (using artistic or self-expression exercises) to help people take hold of theis lives, and in the face of serious illness, to feel in command. It is a moving and absorbing book with special insights into the world of people with serious illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beneficial Reading, Regardless of Life's Circumstances
John Graham-Pole, M.D. is authentic. His writing will be most beneficialfor those (and their families) who are just now or will or perhaps alreadyhave learned what it is to be "ill".Listen, Read, Believe.

Ibelieve everyone can benefit from this book because during our lives wewill experience pain and grief in many and different ways. This book takesme back about 13 years. I recognize much of what I learned then, and (now)understand more fully some of what I didn't.G-P's subject is real.Understanding allows Peace, Thankfulness, and Blessings.God isGood.

When going through dread disease; chronic/acute;life-threatening,devastating illness; and/or depression, we often feel totally alone. Wefeel that others simply don't understand what we're thinking, experiencing,or feeling.Dr. G-P's authenticity shows he does understand. We are alsoshown another choice: Creativeness from within (and we all do havesomething to "say").

G-P listens and learns, observes and acts. I personally know he cares very much for his patients and his work, andI'm grateful every day of my life that Dr. G-P was our daughter's attendingphysician some 13 years ago. Today, I'm grateful for learning of this bookand having the opportunity to read it, to share this book with others whowant to be a creative, self-expressed person regardless of thecircumstances of their lives or the lives of those they hold dear.Thisbook is authentically written, gratefully received, and will be beneficialto all who read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new primer on creative art in health and healing
Dr. John Graham-Pole's new book, "Illness & the Art ofSelf-Expression" is a long-needed primer on self-help for both thehealthy and those receiving medical care. The author summarizes nicely thebenefits of art in healing, whether it be visual art, music, dance orwriting, and goes on to make the process easy for those who are new to theconcept. He stresses the importance of relaxation, playtime and laughter.Whether enjoying the art of others, or expressing emotions throughone's own creative art, the rewards are endless. This book can be of greatvalue to those facing serious health problems, health professionals, oranyone with an interest in health and healing. It would be a valuableaddition to every table in every waiting room in any health facility. ... Product Description
The emotional and psychological impact of caring for a chronically ill spouse.

When one's spouse is diagnosed with a serious illness, two lives are devastated. The partner is a victim, too. Author Chris McGonigle, who was a well spouse for fifteen years, draws on her own personal experience and on that of the many other men and women whom she interviewed and who spoke frankly to her about what it is really like to take care of a chronically ill spouse. Her honest book reassures readers that they are not alone in what they feel and are going through. The topics covered include initial reaction to the diagnosis; denial; communication; what losing the sexual part of marriage means; anger; violence; parenting; and spirituality. A final section tells where to turn for help. Through the wisdom and compassion of the many voices in the book, readers will learn how others cope and what they themselves can do to survive. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Surviving" is the operative word
My wife Aisha and I read this book together, and we found it didn't reflect our experience at all. I've had MS for 30 years, and it has been rough for both of us, but there has always been hope. There have always been positives and even areas of growth for us. I wrote a book about it called Art of Getting Well, available on Amazon.

But the people in Chris McGonigle's book are much worse off. They go downhill fast; they wind up in nursing homes or dead. I'm sure this reflects her experience, but it presents a distorted picture. Most people with chronic illness can live pretty good lives. Partners do suffer, but there are ways of reducing the suffering.

Many of the people she writes about don't have chronic illness at all. They have had injuries that left them paralyzed or brain damaged. And in every story, she seems to find the perfect fact or anecdote to make the situation even bleaker than it is.

McGonigle says that when her husband was diagnosed with MS, there were no books or support for her.She is so right that partners don't get support.Aisha and I have been doing workshops and classes on sex and intimacy for couples with chronic illness, and we find that partners almost never get a chance to talk about or read about their situation.

She says there were books on "caregiving," but none on "living" with a chronically ill spouse. She set out to write that book for partners, but she wound up with another caregiving book, minus the practical suggestions. The book on having a good life for couples with a chronic illness still needs to be written. Aisha and I are working on that - if you have a story or ideas to contribute, contact me at davidsperorndotcom.

One thing I want to give Chris credit for is writing honestly about starting a relationship with another man while her husband was spending years in a nursing home. It angers me that well partners get criticism for meeting their own needs while caring for a very sick person. In fact, finding some pleasure in life often enables well spouses to keep caring for their partners.Because of our culture's sick (IMO) elevation of monogamy to a moral absolute, spouses have to go through all kinds of grief to have some love in their lives.

So that's a big plus for this book. There are others. But the grim quality of life of the people described in this book will bring you down or scare you off, if your situation is not so dire.It is about "surviving," but not about really living with a chronic illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Someone understands!
I have finally found someone who truly understands what I am going through every day. This book presented the REAL- yes the well spouse has anger and feels isolated and desires sex! This book has been a God-send for me!I am so glad that I found it and I recommend it to anyone who finds him or herself in my unfortunate situation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deeply flawed
The spouses of the chronically ill often suffer in little-known and terrible ways. Few resources are available to help them. This ought not be. But this book, despite its promising title, will not provided desperately needed help for those who attempt to minister to their chronically ill spouses.

The reason is simple. The most important reality for handling chronic illness is ongoing love and commitment, despite the pain, frustration, and anger. In chapter three, Mrs. McGonigle condones adultery when the well partner has had enough and needs to have her or his sexual and emotional "needs" met by another man or woman. She even admits to committing adultery herself-during a one-year "affair"-and justifies this in self-deceptive ways. Her husband supposedly tacitly allowed for it. She even claims that this betrayal ended up strengthening her relationship to him. That is utter garbage.

The wedding vows do not allow for that serve-serving and sinful path of destruction. Yes, living with the chronically ill is hell. One often does not know how cope. Nevertheless, the path of virtue demands faithfulness. Would Mrs. McGonigle have allowed for her husband to commit adultery if she had been the one with a chronic illness? If so, the debauchery only intensifies. For a more faithful response to chronic illness, read "Beyond Chaos" by Greg Phiburn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why?
This book starts out with great ideas and empathy for the "well" spouse, giving them a sense of support and understanding. Yet, it suggest the well spouse have an affair to curb their sexual needs. I find this deplorable!

I am chronically ill and the thought of my husband having sex with another woman makes me sick. I don't care that the author claims her ill husband sort of consented to it. He said he did not want to know about it if she did. Obviously, it was not really okay with him.

What happened to "for better or worse" or "in sickness and in health?" Marriage is about a commitment, not about selfish urges. Besides, there are many other ways to be fulfilled sexually within marraige, other than intercourse, if this is not possible for the couple. Illness and impotence are not an excuse or justifiable reason for an affair.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the well spouse
This book is wonderful. It helped me so much to know that the feelings that I have are completely normal to the well spouse of a chronically ill patient. From the anger and resentment to the wonderful feelings of love it is all explained here for us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy, insightful read
One reviewer mentioned that the authors writes in a chatty, conversational tone--that's an accurate description. I found this book an easy read and very insightful and useful for helping me get on track to recovering and caring for myself, as well as preventing future relapses.

The author recommends useful tips for recovering from an illness: put your life before your illness, listen to your body, conserve your energy for healing, change the things that harm you, and get the help you need. His recommendations come from what's worked for patients, friends, family members, and a lit review of what other authors have written.

Thanks to the tips in The Art of Getting Well, I feel better equipped to recognize when I feel stressed, to calm myself down in a soothing way, to recognize the signs and ask for help when I need it, and visualize healing and becoming the healthy person I want to be, to honoring myself by putting myself first without negatively impacting others.

This is a book I will keep on my shelves to reflect upon for years to come.

Title: The Art of Getting Well

Author: David Spero, R.N.

"Illness is the best teacher, awareness is the best medicine, self care is the best care."David Spero's health-coaching motto.

They say timing is everything, very true of the arrival of this book for my review. After lying awake most of the night with my throbbing limbs, hands and feet, I opened my package and thought "Oh no, not another self help book."Ultimately I quickly changed my mind as I started to read this practical and informative guide to a 5 step program for recovery. The aim of this book is to provide a key to improving our quality of life and even possibly improve our overall condition.

The book is based on science and medicine and readers will find references in the back of the book. David Spero's own professional and personal experience provides the background and basis. It has been written for the millions of people suffering from a "chronic" or "progressive" condition and all caregivers. I believe anyone that reads it would benefit.

Included are true stories, easy to identify with, where to get help, how to ask for it but most importantly, the book encourages readers to take responsibility for themselves.Educate yourself about your condition, identify your body's signals and be proactive in the course of treatment.Perhaps the first step is to understand that we DESERVE to be able to take the time to help ourselves, slow down and enjoy our lives.Pain is a personal experience and to each individual it is `very real.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Illness as a gift
David Spero wrote a helpful and positive book for anyone facing life with illness. It was well written and covered all the key issues for living successfully with chronic illness. He offers a wide range of solutions to help others improve their quality of life as well as shift their attitudes about illness in general. I could see my own journey in the book and thought it captured the essence of illness as a powerful spiritual teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book from a knowledgeable, wise, and compassionate author
The Art of Getting Well, by David Spero, is a very informative, enjoyable, and inspiring book for those of us with chronic illnesses. David has included many helpful examples, from his own and other's lives, of what works and what doesn't. He describes standard and alternative treatment options for the reader to consider. He also gives many valuable ideas to help the chronically ill have better lives whether or not their condition improves. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Living Well
You don't have to have a chronic illness to get a lot out of Spero's "The Art of Getting Well." Maybe that's because living in our fast paced and relatively crazed culture qualifies all of us as chronically ill. Whatever the case, the accessible style and reassuring tone of this book give you the confidence and motivation to make real changes in your life. I'm especially pleased that Spero does not fall into the "blame the victim" camp. Getting sick is not our fault, although we can have a say in how or whether we get well, up to a point. Sometimes our luck runs out, but our spirit can still remain strong, furthered along by the compassion of bonafide healers and primo storytellers like Spero. Get two: one for yourself and one for a friend. ... Read more

My uncle, who has arthritis, has changed the way he eats and started exercising based on what's in this book. My mother, who is recovering from breast cancer, told me she found out a lot of things she can do to prevent it from coming back. I have a friend at work in the early stages of AIDS. 5-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the Yeast Connection
Amazing read with all my questions answered. The self test was an eye opener and the suggested treatment via medicine and elimination diet was right on.

Anyone suffering from chronic yeast problems and/or chronic fatigue must read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good Doctor
I went to college in western Tennessee where I experienced allergies for the first time. I saw a Dr. Crook who was supposed to be the best doctor
around at the time (1975-1977). I had no idea until years later that this
was the doctor I saw! He was very thorough, kind, and approachable to a college student in distress. His books have helped a lot of people. I thought he was ancient back then...he was probably younger than I am now!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book That Started it All
Dr. Crook was one of the first to write about CFS,this book does have cartoons which make it easier to understand. This book changed/saved my life. My daughter & I were diagnosed in 1983(a rarity in itself back then)and told "good news is, yes there is something wrong with you. Bad news is there really isn't a standard drug or treatment. Except expensive immunoglobin therapy that your insurance won't cover since they don't really recognize CFS as an illness!" I didn't get the book until 1990 and read it from cover to cover the first night. Remember no real internet then and GNC carried vitamins and body building supplements, no St.Johns Wort, forget Acidopholous and CoQ10 sounded like a Star Wars character.THANKS TO DR. CROOK these things plus many others in the book made a complete difference in my health. Yes the other books listed are more informative, they were published later. If you can still find this one read it first. P.S. I was searching AMAZON because my 2nd copy is now so tattered and covered with notes from people I've loaned it to that it resembles a high school yearbook complete with heartfelt comments:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information
This book had extremely helpful information for those suffering from symptoms that relate to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The author gives practical advice and explains the cause of often misunderstood symptoms such as itching, headaches, nausea, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, etc.If you are suffering from CFS, Fibromyalgia, or allergy symptoms, I highly recommend this book. This book was far easier to read and understand than many books on the topic. It also address overconsumption of sugar as a problem, which many authors are reluctant to address.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I've read other Yeast Connection books and they were much better than this one. The book has an over abundance of cartoons used for illustration and instruction, so much so that they are extremely distracting and make it very difficult to read. All of the information covered in this book can be read in the Yeast Connection Handbook and others. It basically repeats other books and adds too many cartoons to fill in the pages. ... Read more
