Book Description

Explore dance outside the theater with the world's most innovative choreographers

"Kloetzel and Pavlik have created a valuable resource, documenting a wide range of site-specific dance events through a combination of interviews, practitioners' accounts, and stunning images. This volume raises useful questions about the politics of art's interventions into the public realm and gives insight into the pragmatic challenges of making site dance."--Fiona Wilkie, Roehampton University

In recent years, site-specific dance has grown in popularity. In the wake of groundbreaking work by choreographers who left traditional performance spaces for other venues, more and more performances are cropping up on skyscrapers, in alleyways, on trains, on the decks of aircraft carriers, and in a myriad of other unexpected locations worldwide.

In Site Dance, the first anthology to examine site-specific dance, editors Melanie Kloetzel and Carolyn Pavlik explore the work that choreographers create for nontraditional performance spaces and the thinking behind their creative choices. Combining interviews with and essays by some of the most prominent and influential practitioners of site dance, they look at the challenges and rewards of embracing alternative spaces.

The close examinations of the work of artists like Meredith Monk, Joanna Haigood, Stephan Koplowitz, Heidi Duckler, Ann Carlson, and Eiko Otake provide important insights into why choreographers leave the theatre to embrace the challenges of unconventional venues.

Site Dance also includes more than 80 photographs of site-specific performances, revealing how the arts, and movement in particular, can become part of and speak to our everyday lives. Celebrating the often unexpected beauty and juxtapositions created by site dance, the book is essential reading for anyone curious about the way that these choreographers are changing our experience of the world one step at a time.

Melanie Kloetzel is associate professor of dance at the University of Calgary. Carolyn Pavlik is associate professor of dance at Western Michigan University.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life and Times of Ellen von Frankenberg
This is scholarly and extremely well researched book covering a fascinating period in the history of dance in the 20th century. The author Karen Bell-Kanner has traced von Frankenberg's career from the school of dancer Mary Wigman in Dresden in 1920's at a boom time for German Modern Dance to her activities as a choreographer and dance director under the Nazi regime when she lost her job, modern dance being considered 'improper'. She did manage to reform a group and was sent to perform for the troops behind the lines in Russia and even in Normandy on the eve of the Allied invasion. She experienced the fire bombing of Dresden and rebuilt her life in the ruins of Berlin. Despite all the intersting content I do have a quibble with Bell-Kanner's writing style- or rather lack of it.She appears to have translated her interviews from the German, word for word, which leave a strangley disjointed English which I felt detracted from the whole. However, a thoroughly worth-while effort in a field which is litle known in the English speaking world.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARVELOUS WHO'S WHO OF HOLLYWODO CHOREOGRAPHERS
In this expansive encyclopedia, author Billman offers a comprehensive who's who of Hollywood film choreographers and dance directors from the start of the movie business. Each entry provides a brief biography/perspective of the talent under examination as well as providingtheir film credits and listing their career contributions in other mediums.

Of particular interest are the author's essays on the history/development of screen dance as techniques, style, and technology impacted how choreographers and dance directors executed their craft in Hollywood productions over the many decades.

A unique treasure trove of information well worth purchasing--and enjoying!

5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive work
This book will delight you if you love dance in movies. I picked it up out of curiosity and found myself lost in its pages in no time. Even as someone who knows a lot about dancing in the movies, I keptsaying "I didn't know that!" as I read through the various biographies. It's most impressive the way the author has cross-referenced the complex relationships between dancers and choreographers. As director of the Academy of Dance on Film, he has access to the "backstory" of how things really happened, and this book is filled with wonderful anecdotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Resource
This book is a totally unique resource. It contains both a history of dance on film (by decade) and a veritable biographic encyclopedia of film choreographers and dance directors, from the well known to those who should be. Despite the massive research that must have been required for this book, it does not read like an academic tome, but is written in a lively, enjoyable style that makes it difficult to put down.An added bonus are the numerous. and often rare, photographs.

4-0 out of 5 stars as "Dance Spirit" says...
From the review in Dance Spirit Magazine -"When you pick up a copy of Film Choreographers and Dance Directors, you'll wonder how on earth you managed without it. This comprehensive encyclopedia contains biographiesand credits for 970 choreographers, who worked on 3,500 films. Product Description
This is the first book-length study in any language about this Russian artist--Parius Petipa's colleague and Tchaikovsky's collaborator--who is widely celebrated and yet virtually unknown. It follows Ivanov from his infancy in a St Petersburg foundling home through to his career as a dancer, regisseur, and choreographer in the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet. Ivanov's artistic world is described, as is his legacy-- some dozen works, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the famous dances from Prince Igor--that inspired Mikhail Fokine in the next generation. The book is richly documented, including the first complete publication of Ivanov's memoirs and hundreds of citations, many published here for the first time, from state documents, reminiscences, and criticism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding scholarship reveals life of unknown balletmaster
Lev Ivanov has been, for the last century, a known name but an unknown figure. As fruit of exceptional research into Russian archives, Professor Wiley has produced what he claims is a `first study'--which undoubtedly itis, but which future generations of dance lovers and scholars willrecognize as a major work of historical and interpretative research. Ivanov must ever remain a shadowy figure.Contemporary comment andcontemporary records reveal as little as one might expect about a man wasonly `second balletmaster'.His legacy to us, of course, is enshrined intwo of the most popular ballet in the world--`Swan Lake' and `TheNutcracker'.Yet it is Professor Wiley who has now made clear the extentof Ivanov's contribution to the development and the greatness of theRussian imperial ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre. The book is essentialreading for anyone concerned with ballet, and it is a work of bothscholarship and artistic insights. --ClementCrisp, Ballet Critic,TheFinancial Times of London ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking of Dance
This book was everything I expected. It came to me quickly and I was very pleased with the condition of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eminently Readable & Delightful Journey in Modern Choreography
Joyce Morgenroth's work, aptly titled Speaking of Dance, allows us the pleasure of actually hearing the voices of the choreographers and, in a very real sense, seeing their work. This simple integrity of purpose may be a large part of what makes the book so eminently readable. The author signals us with her first introductory words, "Watching dance..." that we are in for a journey from audience point-of-view.Then, Morgenroth neatly take us to the source, her interviews with twelve well-known choreographers. What different sources they turn out to be!

Speaking of Dance lets the choreographers tell their stories with the full flair of their personalities.I get who they are without being spoon-fed.They speak in their twelve highly individuals styles, just what you hope for from contemporary titans in the dance world. (No doubt much clearer sounding than some of them actually articulated before Morgenroth edited for us.)In speaking they let us into their world. How much each captivates is illuminated almost as much by how they present themselves, perhaps who they are, as by what they have created on the floor...and, in some cases, off the ceilings, on the walls, with the music coupled with each artist's internal vision. In every case I learn

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart and lively
I like this book alot.In the introduction, we hear the voice of Joyce Morgenroth, author and interviewer. An auspices start. The writing is smart and lively.Morgenroth loves dance, has a keen eye for details, and lots of questions.Through the intro, her energetic and easy writing makes her feel close... and she is willing to take us along into the kitchens and lofts to speak with dancemakers about the alchemy of choreography.

First stop, though is a short history of modern dance. We get facts but Morgenroth concentrates on the catalysts that led to explorations. She places each of the artists in the book in context.

The interviews start with a short bio but the heft is the voice of the artist. The pieces are spontaneous and intimate and also well-structured. The artists' stories of their histories are funny and human. No matter how well known, it is clear that each artist is still deeply involved with the process of making work.

I teach dance compostion and after reading Speaking of Dance realized what a priceless resource this is for young people making art.We can't give them a formula, just tips and the courage to get out there and try.

This book supports that idea completely. ... Read more

Product Description
Dramatically candid conversations about the creative life with 59 leading American choreographers.

"Eichenbaum's firsthand knowledge of dance, her passion for dancing and the people who do it, and her appreciation of the minutiae of lives, both everyday and Olympian, all combine to open windows onto the soul of dance and the lives of those who helped to define and shape the art in the 20th century."—Jennifer Dunning, dance critic, New York Times

Where does the impulse to create originate? What is the choreographer's responsibility to the dancers, the audience, the self? These are just a few of the probing questions that Rose Eichenbaum asks some of America's most celebrated choreographers in her quest to understand the secrets of creativity. A collection of photographic portraits and vignettes based on intimate conversations, Masters of Movement is a rare journey into the world of dance. Masters of Movement is a book for every lover of dance , dance student and those whose hearts belong to dance. Each and every interview cements the idea of the connectivity of our creativity. The author has done a great deed assembling these moments for us to enjoy. It is wonderful that she was able to interview these creative creatures before some of them "moved on".Highly recommend it for anyone who has enjoyed: ballet, modern dance, jazz dancing, movies with a dance theme and those old Hollywood movies that had any kind of dancing in it.This book has something for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
I expected to be wowed by the photos in Ms. Eichenbaum's book, as I have attended some of her photography exhibits. What I did not expect was that I would be so entertained by the interviews!I am not very familiar with the world of dance but with her interviews, she has portrayed the spirit, the style and the passions of each individual -- they are all very inspirational. And with the photos and the prose combined she has really captured the essence of these dancers. You do not need to be a dancer to appreciate this book!

As an artist and art educator, I am enthralled with the photos in this book. The design elements and knowledge of art and dance all combine to create a beautiful presentation of each dance artist. The wonderful part is that the dancers are shown in their own environment. The love, absolute love of what they are doing shows in every face. The text is something you want to sit down and absorb over and over.
