1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time for me..
If you are looking for a place to start to get into linux... first of all FC3 is outdated already. FC5 is out now. Second of all, if you are new to linux, Ubuntu linux may be an easier distro to start with. Theres a huge online support community and its very user friendly in my opinion. Since I was already used to Red Hat, some of the Ubuntu quirks were strange for me. But for a beginner, I think Ubuntu is superior.

I have a few machines running FC3 already and I thought this might be a good reference book. Turns out I already knew most of the book already, and I also know where to get help online for anything else. So I shouldn't have wasted my time.. ah well.

1-0 out of 5 stars DVD defective!
The DVD this comes with is defective.I have a relatively new PC that can boot from the DVD/cd drive, but this DVD is not bootable.I went into BIOS to make sure (he doesn't even mention checking the BIOS!).He just says 'boot from the DVD' and doesn't even mention BIOS.Well you can't, because the DVD is defective.I had to download linux (free) from linuxiso.org, and i suggest you do the same.oh and don't get this book, get the red hat linux bible instead.at least there the dvd will work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost painless way to get started
When Red Hat stopped selling their low end packaged product and turned the whole thing over to the Fedora group I was very dissappointed and felt that this part of the market was simply going to go away. Instead I've been plesantly surprised to see that publishers have picked up on this vacancy and produced books like this one that include the full distribution. And at a price well below what the Red Hat packaged product cost.

This book is, like the title says, for dummies. Not stupid just that you don't know about this particular subject. It's main intent is to get you through the installation and set up of a desktop workstation. There is a bit about using Apache to set up a web server, but neither "data base" not "PHP" are even in the index.

As is common with the For Dummies books, this one includes a good bit of humor. It helps me to stay awake and I like it. It's also good to see that this book can take some the mystery oout of the Unix environment. If there's going to be any competition for Microsoft, it has to come from books like this. Say to go publisher.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mix of desktop and server Linux to get you started...
If you're looking for a good entry level text to get started with the Fedora distribution of Linux (and one in which you can have fun reading it), try out Red Hat Fedora Linux 3 For Dummies by Jon 'maddog' Hall and Paul G. Sery (Wiley).

Chapter List:
Part 1 - Installing Fedora Core: And In The Opposite Corner... A Penguin?; Paving The Way For Fedora Core; Ready, Set, Install!; Getting To Know Fedora Core
Part 2 - Got Net?: Dull Dial-Up Modems Still Get The Job Done; Broadband Rocks!; Connect Locally, Communicate Globally: Connecting To A LAN; Only You Can Prevent Bad Firewalls
Part 3 - Linux, Huh! What Is It Good For? Absolutely Everything!: Gnowing GNOME; Gnowing More Applications; Surfin' The Net And Using E-Mail; Using Audio And Video Applications; Going To The OpenOffice; The Days Of Wine And Windows Applications
Part 4 - Revenge Of The Nerds: Building Your Own Private Network; Creating Basic Linux Network Services; Securing Your Future; Bringing In The Fedora Core Repairman; Building A Streaming Audio Server
Part 5 - The Part Of Tens: Ten Problem Areas And Solutions; Ten Security Vulnerabilities And Their Fixes
Part 6 - Appendixes: Fedora Core Administration Utilities; Discovering Your Hardware's True Identity; Filing Your Life Away; Becoming A Suit: Managing The Linux File System; Revving Up With RPM And YUM; About The DVD
Index

It used to be a book on Linux covered how to set up a Linux server and how to run a command line interface to do all sorts of strange things. Now the Linux desktop is becoming a viable option both personally and commercially, so books like this need to cover both. While you can find separate titles that cover just the desktop or just the server more completely, this For Dummies title will do a good job in giving you an overview of both.Since the book includes a DVD with the entire Core 3 distribution, you can immediately get started on your Linux adventure. And like all Dummies titles, there's a lot of humor and informal writing going on, so it's not like you're wading through a technical manual or something...

Probably not a book you'd give to Gramma to get her off of Windows, but a decent choice for an IT person looking to expand their horizons...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good starter book
This book is a great place for the Linux newbie to start. It's an easy read and gives you good basic information, plus some advanced stuff (a wireless multimedia server for your home network?!)

You're expected to have a little knowledge about computers but not much. Basically the book assumes most readers use ms windows at least a little bit. Another good thing is the book gives you Fedora Core 3 on DVD. Check it out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Confusion relief!!
Why CD"s and DVD"s have to be so confusing I don't know. This "Dummies" book like all the others I've purchased help diffuse the confusion- in understandable terms.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok if you use Roxio, I don't!
This book goes into great detail but only if you use Roxio.I don't and the book doesn't really go into detail about how to use the information with any other software.Pretty much useless in my case.I gave it two stars because I did learn a little by looking through it.Not enough, however, to make it worth the purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars CD & DVD recording - 2ed
For someone who is a real novice I suspect that there is a lack of basic information to get that person started. For someone who is a step above a novice the book (latest edition) is already badly out of date and still doesn't cover popular software written years before the publication data (e.g., Pinnacle Clean). It does not cover any of the problems one encounters with music recording. It simply tells you how to transfer files from your computer to a CD or DVD and because that is simply a matter of clicking on buttons for software included on most computers it doesn't help.

1-0 out of 5 stars You have to be a real Dummie to get this book
You have to be a real dummy to get this book. If you have the Internet you can get this book for free (File-Sharing,) or just google it and check out some sites. I'm still cussing to this day for getting this junk. This book doesn't tell you anything that the burning software of your choice won't tell you. If you think I'm lying then fine, get the book but, be ready to start cussing. Hell I'm cussing as I type...

4-0 out of 5 stars For Learners
This information is very helpful and especially understandable. My only problem with is was that there is too much information and sometimes that causes confusion ... Read more

Product Description
No matter what recordable CD hardware you own, this ultimate guide to using and troubleshooing your equipment shows you how to make the most of its capabilities. Most people use recordable CDs to back up and store huge data files, but you can also cut your own music CDs, make greeting cards, baby books, wedding albums, design family trees, archive important documents, and more! The Hewlett-Packard Official Recordable CD Handbook walks you through everything from choosing a system that suits your needs and recording your first CD to getting the most out of your investment.Amazon.com Review
You can't beat a compact disc recorder, also known as a "CD burner," as an accessory for your home computer. With it, you can make backups of your data and software, transfer files among computers without a network, and compile music CDs containing all your favorite songs. In an office environment, you can take presentations on the road, make demo disks for customers, and lots more. Hewlett-Packard Official Recordable CD Handbook shows how to select a CD burner and use it to maximum effect. With remarkable brand neutrality, Mark Chambers explains how to configure a CD recorder, use the most popular software for controlling one, and put it to use in interesting home and office recording projects.

Chambers offers no-nonsense buying advice ("For most of us, 4x is fast enough"), straightforward hardware configuration instructions with lots of illustrations, conceptual information about how the CD-recording process works, and precise directions for using recording software. He's not stingy with procedures for you to follow, but you might value more highly his explanatory text. In that prose, Chambers offers facts and hints you can use to get your system out of any jam it might get into, and properly optimized once it's running. The projects described in these pages are cool, too: Chambers shows how to create a CD that contains resources for new employees, record a video CD (VCD), and combine music and video on a single disk. --David Wall

Topics covered: All aspects of installing, configuring, and using a CD recorder. With its emphasis on PCs running Microsoft Windows 9x, this book shows how to hook up a CD recorder and get it to work well. A large part of the how-to material deals with Adaptec Easy CD Creator, a popular software package for configuring and burning CDs. Specific instructions for various recording projects conclude this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is for people who doesn't know anything about pc
take me 15min to browse thru the bok and I pratically didn't learn anything new.If you are new to PC and want to burn your first CD, you may learn more by just tinkering with the software you already got. This book does not go into any detail on the stucture of the file format, TOC or anything. It touches many topics and then go to the next.Read the help file or manual on your burning software and that's pretty much what this book is about. Here's some examples: HFS (file format): "short for Hierarchical File System. This is the file system used on the Mac. Although it's being slowly phased out, HFS is still important in the mac world."What kind of crap is this!?There are a couple of paragraphs on mixed mode disc and then it give tons of reason NOT to use it.
On top of all these, this book is outdated, EasyCD and Toast are old versions and it did not really say anything about VCD or DVD, stick with the help files in your burning software!

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed
I give this book 4 stars. It has everything you need to know to installand record music CDS.I also learned more about making data CDS in thisbook than anything else I've read yet. A good pick.

4-0 out of 5 stars How I learned to use my CD-RW Drive
I just finished reading Hewlett-Packard's OFFICIAL RECORDABLE CD HANDBOOK written by Mark L. Chambers.I received an HP CD-RW drive (8200i) and tried to learn how to operate it on my own.I promptly ruined 4 new R-Wdisks.After reading the HANDBOOK, Inow have backed up all my files, myoperating system and working on a family album. This book certainlyimproved my learning curve and allowed me to "get right to it"after only several hours of reading. My thanks to HP and Mr. Chambers forthis helpful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Burners should buy this book
This is the best book on CD burning I've ever read! It covers everything. The text on Easy CD version 4 is great and even takes you through DirectCD. I like the author recommendations and his style, he knows hisrecording! Whether you are already burning your own CD-ROMS or looking fora burner to buy and how to use it you will enjoy this book. ... Product Description

When the new medium of CD-ROMs emerged, industry figures and critics alike proclaimed their virtually unlimited potential. Adapting material from well-established media like television and film,CD-ROMs have quickly transformed genres such as science fiction and horror. At the same time, the realities of actual CD-ROMs often fall short of their utopian visions.

On a Silver Platter marks a "coming of age" for CD-ROMs as a commercially and aesthetically significant medium demanding critical attention. Greg Smith brings together media scholars such as Lisa Cartwright, Henry Jenkins, Janet Murray, and Scott Bukatman to analyze how CD-ROMs offer alternatives to familiar places--to museums, to cities, and especially to classrooms. Examining specific CD-ROM titles, including, Sim City, Civilization, and Phantasmagoria, the contributors argue that CD-ROMs are complex texts worthy of close consideration, both for how they have changed our understanding of space and genre, and for how they will impact the development of future media.

By examining particular CD-ROM texts and contexts, On a Silver Platter probes this new medium for insight and understanding into the current state of multimedia and into the future of technology.

I'm a beginner at putting music and pictures together to create a CD, but this book makes the program that I have much easier to understand.

Don't waste your money on this book! If you want to know how to use Nero, view the tutorials on their web site. Once you view a tutorial you have a whole new set of hurdles - that of trying to get Nero to work. Good Luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy composition of audio CDs
A diverse portfolio of capabilities centred around writing and reading CDs and DVDs. Most operating systems for desktops now let you write a CD or DVD. But typically this is for any type of data. You certainly want this ability.

But there are special types of data, described by Wang, that are very important to many users. When the data consists of audio or video, in various standard encodings. Nero 6 is devoted to the easy handling of these types. For example, it has a simple Wave Editor, to edit sound files. Wisely, Wang skips the underlying theory, which is heavy on fast Fourier transforms and extended manipulations in frequency space. He shows how you can straightforwardly use techniques described at a musician's level of decision making.

Wang also talks about how Nero can play DVD movies on your computer. Granted this is an impressive ability. But personally, I'd pass on this. If I watch a DVD, I'd prefer it on a real TV screen, and so should you. But undoubtedly, some readers will thrill to watching DVDs on their computers. ... Read more
