3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I'd call a "comprehensive" guide to the world's breeds
I bought this book because I am thinking about buying a pedigreed cat in the future and I wanted a resource on the temperments, care requirements, histories, and appearences of many different cat breeds.

That said, this book excelled in some areas and failed me miserably in some others...

The photographs:

There are great photographs throughout the book that are large and in color, some full plate/full page and many half plate/page. Let it be noted that the great photos are the ONLY reason this book is getting a "3 star" rating from me and not the "2 or 1" it deserves based on lack of text and information.

The Information / Text:

At most, this book provides a couple of paragraphs of information on SOME breeds, however, most breeds get about half a paragraph apiece. The information provided isn't particularly insightful and some breeds have a list of "good" and "bad" points... i.e. good-playful, bad-naughty.
Most pages have no text other than photograph captions...Some of these retell text from the breed information paragraph.

Allocation of space in the book:

Some breeds, the most popular (persians, burmese, siamese, asians, and orientals,) get a huge amount of space...i.e. The persian section is 57 pages long! While other, less-well-known breeds get hardly anything...i.e. the egyptian mau and sphynx are accorded about a half-page and one photograph each.

There is also a six page long "kitten" picture section. The only purpose for this, I would suppose, is that they had extra breed photos that they bought and had to put them somewhere (and didn't have anything else of value to put at the back of the book). Not that I have anything against cute pictures of kittens...but, I can see all of them that I want by buying a wall calender at my local barnes & noble.

British or American photographs / standards?:

This book is decidedly British in terms of photographs of specific breeds (the Havannah Brown is under the Oriental group), and groupings of cats.I had hoped for more from a book claiming to be "comprehensive".

In a nutshell:

My review boils down to this, if you want a nice coffee-table book of cat photographs, then this one will not dissappoint. However, if you are looking for more "meat" in terms of descriptions of breed temperment, history, etc, this book will leave you wanting more, far more.

Also beware if you are particularly looking for information on a rarer breed, this book won't have it and will probably only have a picture or two at best... By the same token, if you are a fan of persians, siamese, burmese, asians, or orientals, this book will have plenty of photographs for you to drool over.Although, sadly, no "contemporary" style burmese for comparison. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Rip Off! Not advertised as Kid's Book...
This is a case of let the buyer beware! No where in the Amazon promo does it indicate that this NEW 2008 publication is a children's book aimed for Kindergarten/1st grade readers! Imagine my surprise as a knowledgeable Siamese owner looking for something educationally up to date in the arena of Siamese felines.
While pictures are cute and nice, certainly falsely marketed. Fortunately a young child was visiting, and we read it together and my Siamese authographed it personally to her. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books on Siamese Cats
I was heartbroken when my original copy of "All About Siamese Cats" was water damaged years ago. The book had pages that appear laminated (not your ordinary paper) andwhile the water didn't affect the photos and text, it did cause the pages to wrinkle. This last summer I came across a copy of this book online at Amazon.com. When it arrived, I was pleased to find it was exactly the same copy as the one that was damaged. 4-0 out of 5 stars will enjoy this item
I got this item shortly after Christmas and look forward to being able to sit down and explore it in detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and children.
Great beginner book for anyone interested in learning to draw.It is arranged easily, great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Copy Cat
Lee Ames has produced a series of "Draw 50..." about various animals, which all seem very good. I have chosen to start with the cat book, and plan to use the ones about dogs and horses next.

About the layout of the book: Each page covers one of the 50 cats. Ames presents eight steps on each cat/page, from the first sketchy outlines to the finished cat. The first step is just a few lines (about five) lines and shapes, indicating general forms, so that it is easy to copy this and to move along to each subsequent step. Personally I find it easier to use a method of "blocking in" the larger shapes (like a circle for the body, other large shapes, etc) and then moving on to refine the form. I advise that you refer to the finished drawing as you work through the steps, particularly with this method. This should help you get the proportions right and understand how each step relates to the animal as a whole and to stay on target.

About the cats: the 50 cats are nicely balanced with examples from 18 breeds, in various poses; five types of head shots; eight types of wild cats, five "famous cats", including Morris and Felix; six fun poses of kittens; 12 behaviors and emotions, ending with a sleeping cat: Good Night! The book lacks a table of contents, so I have counted these for you.

The complexity is easy to moderate, though it would be best to have AT LEAST a rudimentary knowledge and skill about drawing. (For those who have no experience or "talent", or think that they don't, I highly recommend Ed Emberley's books, such as his "Drawing Book of Animals": cute, easy and fun, fun, fun!) I like the fact that the cat drawings in Lee Ames' book can be completed in a few minutes, since I only have small stretches of time for my drawing hobby.

Most art hobbyists can have success copying the various cats in Lee Ames' book. All of the exercises in the book are basically "contour drawing" from graphics (from a drawing, not from a photo or from real life). Because there is no real shading, perspective, light sources, etc, the drawings look rather flat, without depth. The student can move on to value studies (dark and light), light effects, texture, shape, and so on, to create more depth and realism in drawing.

In sum, this book is fun and a good starting point to depicting cats in a way that can bring success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch series
I have a very artistic child and another child who isn't quite as artistic. Both love this book and others from the "Draw 50" series. The one has a blast changing little things and making the pictures his own and the other has fun realizing that she too can create some cool pictures with the easy to follow instructions. This particular book has some wonderful cats featured from your common tabby to more unique household cats and large wild kitties. It's definitely worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars step by step nonverbal instruction
I wanted to draw more realistic cats
and this book showed me that I needed to start with the head shape
and not the ears. There was not a lot of writing, just good step-by-step instruction. From my first drawing with this book, my drawings have improved.I highly reccomend this book! ... Read more

Product Description
Training your cat can be fun and a rewarding experience. Patience and time is something that will be necessary with training. You can train your cat to have good behaviors so that when you are gone you will know they are safe.

What type of cat is trainable? Not all cats are trainable and some of them are not easy to train. There are many different breeds of cats to choose from. Choosing one that is right for you and your family can be a fun experience with looking at the different breeds a deciding, which one is the right breed for you.

As much as I love my cat, that one little feline was trouble from the minute I brought it home. I’m not talking about normal kitten behavior either! This little kitten was trouble with a capital T. The neighbors were complaining and he was about to wreck my house! I knew I had to do something.
That’s when I started to read everything I could on the subject of cat training.

What I discovered completely changed my life!

How did I do it?

I would love to share my secrets with you and my new book on cat training does just that!

1-0 out of 5 stars This is just a very basic book about cats
This is just a generic book about cats, not breed specific, except for the photos.they wrote a cat book template, and just typed in the word "Burmese" as opposed to some other breed, whenever applicable.Don't but it if you already know about cats, and are trying to get info on the Burmese.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Book on the Burmese Breed
This book would mostly be of interest to someone who is unfamilar with the burmese breed. It has sound and informative information about burmese and cats in general, but it is definately at the "novice" level. The pictures are better than most (most pet books seem to have terribly unflattering pictures of burmese) and it is laid out well.

If you are new to the burmese breed, this book is a good start.

1-0 out of 5 stars Non-specific Cat Book
I bought this book from Amazon in good faith that it was specifically about Burmese cats.It is not!It is a book about cats in general, with the only Burmese-specific selling point being all its pretty pictures. And while the pictures are quite nice, I found they alone were not sufficient in replacing actual knowledge about Burmese cats.I wanted to learn about this particular breed, not just read very general cat facts that can easily be found in any sort of cat book.If you're going to buy this book -- don't!You can find alot more good information about Burmese cats (for free) by conducting internet searches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and the best Burmese book I've seen.
Even if you're a Burmese addict from way back and feel you know all there is to know about this breed this book is still a must for the library athome. The only shock I had was how 'squashed in' some of the faces of theAmerican Burmese were, personally I felt they looked like aliens but eachto their own (they don't look like this in New Zealand or Australia).TheBlue on the cover has the same features as my little girl so that was theclincher in buying the book. You won't be disappointed in the content andit's such a good price.Well done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ragdoll cats
i really enjoyed the book it has a lot of good information not only on ragdoll but also the care of most cats and the pictures are great one even loos like my ragdoll he got a big head when i showed it to him great book all in all

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for this price
This is a very good reference book for anyone who is buying their first purebred kitten. There is some background information on Ragdolls, advice on finding reputable breeders, care instructions etc. I have found that most cat books are full of fluff and outdated information, but this book I found actually practical and useful. I loved the color photos. Yes, it is a short book and does not give every bit of information about the breed, and if that is what you are looking for then you will not like this book. But what can you expect from a book of thisprice and size?

BTW, a reviewer below is a bit mistaken. Not nearly all breeders insist upon killed virus for innoculations, only some do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty little book.
This is an attractive small soft covered book with many beautiful color photo's of Ragdolls and cute illustrations by Tana Monsalve. Unfortunately, as a previous reviewer wrote, most of the information here could pertain to any kind of cat. It's generally a domestic cat care book; however, there's a short but interesting "how to" chapter on Cat Shows.

I also thought that there should have been diagrams or pictures displayed along with the description of Colors and Patterns. I'm just discovering Ragdolls myself and the myriad of colors and patterns in this particular breed of cat can be confusing to a novice.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's Not About Any Ragdolls I've Ever Known
This is a generic cat book. Substitute Siamese,American Curl,Domestic Shorthair, or the name of any other breed of cat for the word "Ragdoll" wherever it appears and you've got a "handbook" for that breed. And not a particularly good one, either! Some information is missing or incorrect. For example, there is no explanation concerning the use of killed virus for innoculations-something that every Ragdoll breeder I know insists upon. Missing is information on the slower physical maturation of Ragdolls, that they often do not attain their adult size until three or four years of age and that they remain kittens much longer than some other breeds. The Ragdoll is a unique breed (yes, yes,I know- all cats are unique;however, this book is supposed to be about Ragdolls.),but nowhere in this book do I find any references to the special personality, behaviors, and quirks of the Ragdoll.(As I write this my year old Ragdoll male,AJ,is sitting on the table next to the computer, wondering why I use the word quirks. It's meant in a loving way,my "little" boy.)Actually, this book would be a great deal more interesting, informative, and helpful if the author had consulted AJ before writing. I bought this book hoping to gain insights into the Ragdoll cat-a breed I adore. And I certainly did learn something--how to return a book that was not terribly useful or complete.

A small, four-legged, fur-bearing extortionist. A wildlife-control-expert impersonator. A four-footed allergen. A treat-seeking missile." --Cat Capers

America's 70 million cat owners will rejoice in finding a captivating coffee table book that is as purr-fect as their beloved feline companion.

Fourty-seven percent of cat owners confess that they have more photos of their beloved Morris than of their spouse or significant other. Looking through the pages and portraits of Gandee Vasan's Cat Capers, this doesn't seem far-fetched.

Scaredy cats, cat burglars, and mystery cats inhabit Vasan's pictorials and are presented alongside humorous cat-classifieds, interesting trivia, and delightful musings on all things feline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cats with attitude may not be your thing

Product Description
(Thebooks I publish are always proof read and corrected before publishing on Kindle! David Snode)

Among animals possibly the most perfect, and certainly
the most domestic, is the Cat. I did not think so always,
having had a bias against it, and was some time coming
to this belief; nevertheless, such is the fact. It is a
veritable part of our household, and is both useful, quiet,
affectionate, and ornamental. The small or large dog
may be regarded and petted, but is generally useless ; the
Cat, a pet or not, is of service. Were it not for our Cats,
rats and mice would overrun our house, buildings, cul-
tivated and other lands. If there were not millions of
Cats, there would be billions of vermin.

Since the foundation of the National Cat Club,
followed by the Cat Club and the British Cat Club, of
course cats have attained a more important position than
they formerly held, and not only are they raised in
popular favor, but have greatly increased in value, so
that specimens of sufficient quality to win prizes in their classes readily find purchasers at remunerative prices, and
I know of many persons, of both sexes, who keep well-
filled catteries to supply the demand created by the
shows.

In the early days, I should say long-haired cats were
decidedly in the minority, but for some years past I
expect for exhibition purposes more of the long-haired
have been bred than of the short-haired.
I have not the slightest doubt there are hundreds, if
not thousands, of cats running about the country quite
good enough to win prizes at shows, and to sell for sub-
stantial figures if their owners knew their value.
This I have proved on more than one occasion by
picking up specimens at different times in most unlikely
places, with which I have taken prizes at some of our best
shows.

IT has been suggested to me by many of my "catty"
friends that I should write a small handbook for cat
fanciers. I have had many years' ex-
perience with cats and kittens, and have also a real love
for them, without which I do not believe any one can be a
successful breeder and exhibitor of cats. What is worth
doing at all is worth doing well, and to combine profit with
pleasure is a most desirable end to have in view. The
object, therefore, of this little book is to assist cat lovers to
become cat fanciers. I trust that it may be found helpful
and instructive.

Here you will find a description of your cat along with judging standards and points, if you wish to show your cat.

BONUS 1

You also get an entire book on care and diseases of cats and their cures. At the end of this book are more comparative judging points.

BONUS 2

Also included is a several page essay on the care of kittens.

BONUS 3

In addition you receive this cool little book on the zoological position of the cat family, with a descriptive list of the various feline species around the world. The second chapter describes the anatomy of the typical housecat.

BONUS 4

The final bonus is a book with some quotes and cat stories. Very interesting and amusing.

This is a must have for all cat lovers and fanciers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Other than the History of the breed, not specific to a Burmese Cat at all!
I must agree with the other reviewer that this book offers no additional eye-opening facts in respect to owning a Burmese cat...The history section is specific to the breed (but as a new or existing Burmese owner, you'd probably already know this prior to getting one!) & there is one blurb regarding the Burmese characteristic to yowl when they require attention.Beyond that this book could really be for any other cat out there (feed your cat, give it water, groom it,...).It didn't even specify normal size/weight ranges for the breed and what quantities of food to give them as a guideline. So, in my opinion, useless to a new Burmese owner. Also, I was a bit disappointed that all of the photos are only of Sable & Chocolate Burmese (they are all gorgeous, but a few photos of Blues or Lilacs would be appreciated). All in all this book was disappointing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Substitute the name "Burmese" for any cat
Although books about particular cats/pets are rare and appreciated, I'm afraid this book gave me no further insight into my Burmese cat. Perhaps I am asking too much but I expected to find a plethora of special insights into this special breed. I didn't.
Especially in modern cat care I felt this book lacking. My breeders says: Fresh meat three times a week; chicken wings (raw) at least twice for dental hygiene, vary the diet, enjoy the peculiarly dog like characteristics of the Burmese. But mabe that's all asking too much - gotta go, Nero is bringing his beloved yellow wash cloth for retrieval...
It is hard to criticise a book that describes the best breed of cat on earth. Let's all write one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful pictures!
I liked how there was an equal mixture of the traditional, contemporary, and moderate styles without editorializing.Clear, concise, and good pictures! ... Read more

Product Description
A newly born kitten, not more than four weeks old, was nestled under a porch with his brothers and sisters.Oblivious to the danger that was ahead, they played and waited for their mom to comeback from her walk to feed them. All of a sudden, there were some young boys approaching. The kittens felt the danger, and tried to run, but the boys were too quick for them. They took the kittens, and the little white one was now in the hands of an 8 year old boy.Frightened and shaking, this little kitten managed to get away from the boy and hid for two days under the hood of a car. Without food or water, this little kitten would not have lived. This is a story of a survival and love for a kitten that needed help desperately. The names have been changed, but the events are based on a true story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased with book
I liked the box, was in good condition, and found the book informative and answered several questions which was my reason for purchasing the book.I was very well satisfied with the book and the quality of the product. Would purchase with that company again.

2-0 out of 5 stars very short and sweet
This book covers ALL cats in general, it's not specific enough for Persians.
Dissappointing.

2-0 out of 5 stars An old book
The photos inside are very nice but it doesn't represent the standart of persian cat. Here in Brazil the Persian cat is very diferent. Persian's face (principally Persian's nose) is much more different than it is showing in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on Persian cats to start with.
This book is a good book for its size that does covers the basics that you need to know.Shows many variations of the Persians. For me personally finding a book that shows the blue eyed Chinchilla was a bonus.Plenty of colour photos throughout.

If you are thinking of buying a Persian Cat this book will be a good start.Plenty of information here. For its size the book has a lot going for it.The photos are a treat,You're gonna love the photos in this book! This book has a lot to offer and is good value.Overall,a good quality book.

I would suggest that this book be your first book on Persians then consider books on how to look after your kitten(s) and even the Cat encyclopedia type books after.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Spectacular
I had recently got the cutest little Persian Kitten. As a new cat owner I purchased this book to get information specific to the breed.Outside a few pages of breed information, history and pictures, everything else was just general cat information.I would have expected more on breed care, grooming, and health concerns. ...
