5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with lots of information
This book is great for people that have never owned a bengal cat or any cat. It is small, but contains very much information. I'm a bengal cat breeder and buy it to send along home with the kittens and their new parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book!
I will be getting two Bengal kittens later this year, so naturally I'm "studying up" on all things Bengal. This book has been a big help.

This little gem of a book covers it all:Feeding, general health, history of the breed, general information about the breed, how to introduce to existing pets, even breeding and showing Bengals. The book is very straight-forward and informative, it very efficiently delivers lots of information without fooling around. The information is definitely tailored to the bengal breed in particular, which is great.I definitely recommend this bargain of a book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not quite enough content
I've been researching this breed of cat for about a year now, and wanted to get more information. this seems a bit generic, but still informative. What I wanted to know wasn't in the book. There wasn't enough to call it a complete guide. Overall worth the cash.

5-0 out of 5 stars bengal
a must for any bengal cat owner...........well worth the small price tag........would like to see more on the unique personality of a bengal cat

2-0 out of 5 stars Unimpressed
This book had nothing new in it. There was very little 'bengal specific' information besides the breed history. I could have just checked out a book from the local library. Not really worth the money. You can find a lot more breed-specific information online and by talking ot a breeder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT LITTLE BOOK, GREAT LITTLE PRICE1
This handy guide is well organized, factual and contains a lot of pertinent information specific to longhaired cats. All this for an affordable price! The basics in cat care, health, immunization, nutrition and grooming are contained in this book, along with some cute coloured photographs. Not that longhaired cats differ greatly from shorthaired cats in general cat care; however, certainly the grooming requirements are more laborous and you do need the right tools of the trade to work with. One item that I have found to be of tremendous value that was not mentioned here was a "detangling comb," a wide-spaced steel comb to remove mats, which can be purchased at any pet supply. This is a great little book at a great little price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars At last, useful information
I found this book to be very informative, especially about the day to day management of a cattery which is what I was looking for.The advice is practical and based on the author's experience.I feel that this is the best book on the subject of cattery management that I have found so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in Class for novice and small cat breeder
"Breeding Purebred Cats" was a lifeline for us when we decided to purchase and breed a Maine Coon female. As the author says in her introduction, "It's a simple matter to throw two cats together and hope for the best. But somewhere down the road, disaster and disappointment await the person who believes that 'nature' will take care of everything."

In the exclusive world of the Cat Fancy, it's not even a simple matter to 'throw two cats together'.Everything has to be arranged for in advance (most catteries won't allow their males to breed an unknown female, even one with papers, because of the chance of disease). At any rate, suppose you earn the trust of a cattery owner, or purchase your own male. Then what?Your queen is pregnant. What should you do to ensure that she gives birth to and raises a healthy litter?

This is when "Breeding Purebred Cats" will become indispensible. The author explains in clear, succinct terms how the queen should be handled, how to determine whether she is indeed pregnant, how to figure out when she's going to give birth, how to assist at the kittening, and when to call for help. And "Breeding Purebred Cats" isn't just about breeding and giving birth. It covers all aspects of breeding practices, raising kittens and selling them, and cattery management. We found Anne S. Moore's book essential for the proper care and upbringing of a healthy litter of Maine Coons.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for all cat breeders!
Breeding cats is not easy and this book gives the exact idea of what it means. This book is precious for both new and experienced cat breeders. Interesting, easy to read and full of absolutely essential tips andsuggestions. A "must" for all cat breeders!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and usefull advice for novice breeders
"Breeding Purebred Cats" walks you through the entire process beginning with purchasing your first purebred cat through, housing, breeding, birthing and placing kittens.Filled with loads of practical advice this book is a must for first time breeders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A joy for cat lovers simply to page through
Now in a compact paperback edition, The Complete Cat Owner's Manual: How to Raise a Happy, Healthy Cat is an excellent guide written for cat lovers, cat caretakers, and prospective cat owners of all ages and backgrounds. Chapters discuss how to care for one's cat, the basics of good feline health care, what one needs to know if considering breeding or showing one's cat, and an extensive summary of cat breeds. Featuring beautiful full-color photographs on every page of man's favorite feline friends, The Complete Cat Owner's Manual is a joy for cat lovers simply to page through as well as a jam-packed repository of invaluable information. For example, The Complete Cat Owner's Manual warns that the following foods should never be fed to cats: chocolate (poisonous to cats and dogs), onions (can cause a blood disorder called Heinz-body anemia), raw fish/poultry/eggs (often carry bacteria or parasites, and can destroy important vitamins), bones (may splinter and cause choking or gastrointestinal perforations) or dog food (which is not nutritionally formulated for cats). Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly very informative
This book is informative especially the parts where the author talks about grooming, caring, and raising a cat in general. I felt that it was a very educational book. I would suggest this book to other cat-lovers and anyone who would like to own a "all-in-one" book on cats. It includes how to care for them, feline history, and a guide to breeds. If you are just looking for a guide to breeds, I would suggest another one. As you can see from other reviews, the Bengal breed section is inaccurate, butif you're looking for a book on how to care for cats and a most accurate guide to breeds, this is the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly very imformative

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information in most sections
I loved this book because of the information prsented in most sections. How to Choose a cat, bringing it home, caring for it, health care, breeding and showing a cat, and the cat's long and storied history. There are also lots of good pictures and information. I also liked the section on different breeds and learned about the different "markings" with various cats. I volunteer part-time for a "cat rescue group" and wanted to familiarize myself with some of the "breeds" and mixes we come across and I have learned some interesting things from this book. I grew up with a cat and now have a much better idea of what my mom dealt with with that cat!

My one concern with this book is the section on the Bengal breed. I have not ever owned one, but after looking at several other reviews of this book, it would appear the author is misinformed about this breed. Hence my 3-star rating of this book. Great information here for the most part; you may want to read the section on different breeds with a cautious eye.

2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive.
I found this book largely dissapointing.

Not only was it obviously bias, it had a poor layout (including stupid amounts ofCAPS LOCK FOR NO REASON) and it had a series of quotes, some of which repeated only in different words.

I found the book hard to read with the constant repetition. I knew right away, just from flicking through the book, the author didn't like pets being sent over seas.

5-0 out of 5 stars MILLS PRIDE
After reading this book and many, many more in my research of the breed for purchase I searched the internet for responsible and reputable "Bengal Breeders" and even though I found a few and corresponded with several over email and phone I also ended up contacting Jean Mill too. I couldn't be happier and now have my absolutely gorgeous Bengal Kitten I named "Nala" that Jean shipped to me. Not only is she a perfect example in description, with an awesome coat and beautiful , stunning features she has a personality to match. She is the most intelligent, loving, playful inquisitive, kitten I have ever seen and loves me and and my pups and friends that visit.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will love reading this book and savoring the photos!
You need to buy this book regardless if you already own a Bengal, or are planning on purchasing one. The author Jean Mill of Millwood Bengals studied genetics at the University level and was the founder of the Bengal breed.

The negative reviews that are on Amazon about this book are obviously from uneducated and or envious people. Jean Mill created and developed the Bengal breed to give today's modern society an absolutely unique domestic cat that retains the appearance and luxuriously soft feel of a leopard's coat. This text will take you on an interesting journey through pictures and prose on how Jean Mill evolved the Asian jungles Leopard cat into a Bengal cat.

Moreover, the joy that you will receive from basking your eyes with the beauty along with the sensual softness, and interacting with the gentle personality and extreme intelligence of a Millwood Bengal absolutely has no peers...

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative book from an actual Bengal breeder!
This book wowed me!I had read some negative reviews about it before but decided to order it anyways.I don't know what those people were talking about because this book IS amazing!First off it has high quality color photographs on every page!Second off,the author is and has been a Bengal owner and breeder for years and really knows first hand what she is talking about. She tells you the basics along with what she has learned.
VERY imformative on the Bengal breed! My book of choice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended buy before you purchase your Bengal.
The book is worth purchasing for the stunning photography itself. There are some tips and helpful information, but I've found more detailed information from breeders websites.Books on Bengals are not available as yet in Australia, so not sure how this compares to others, but I doubt breeders nor people wishing to show their cat would learn more than what they already know from this book. Recommended to the pet buyer who wants some basic info on habits, care, growth stages and beautiful photos of a range of Bengal coat patterns. ... Read more

While I find this book enjoyable because it is about my favorite breed, I feel that a lot more photos of the different point colors could have beenincluded. Also, a little more information on the different"types" of Siamese, such as applehead, classic, or wedge wouldhave been interesting. The author implies that exhibitors are breedingproblems within the breed by breeding for a "wedge" type, butneglects to say what type of problems and I came away with the impressionthat she does not approve of the show standard for Siamese.Several goodphotos of show type Siamese are included however.Overall it is a goodbook which perhaps just needs to be updated. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cuddleton Kitties Review of a Brit Book
As a British Shorthair breeder I think I wanted more.It has a lot of good general cat info but not much British Shorthair specifics.
The pictures were cute and the general info good but it left me wanting more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but there is still room for a better book.
This is a nice introduction to the British Shorthair "at a glance".High points include a number of nice color pictures, a good description of the breed, and great instructions on care and feeding.

Forthose looking for more in-depth knowledge like breed genetics, what colorsare commonly available (and why) and where you can get them, showhistories, etc... the book fill fall a bit "short".Still highlyrecommended for anyone interested in Brits though because let's face it,one can never have enough British Shorthair info.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book on a Beautiful Breed

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome little paperback on the Brit.with great photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where is my book??
To ask me to rate the book is a joke-where is it, when will I get it and then I can rate it.
I was forced to rate it ONE STAR because you do not have a MINUS staR!!

The book was ordered in November 2009 and was due to receive it by 13 January 2010.
My Credit Card was debited immediately!!
It is now 29 March 2010 and I still haven't got it.

Receiving your automated replies is most annoying!
Surely their is one person in your Amazon site who can follow this up.
This has gone far enough - tell me where the book is or credit my account with a suitable emailing me with your PERSONAL REPLY.

If you think this is a bit tough.. you dead right.
Action please!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Himmy's are the best cats and this book backs that up!
I have a himalayan cat and let me tell you they are the best cats EVER!!!They are docile, sweet, follows you around like a puppy dog.Tiffany is not a lap cat but she sure is a proxmity cat, everywhere you are, she wants to be, and that includes the restroom, she'll sneak right in behind ya.She is soooooooooooooo sweet.Bless my baby's heart, Tiff is 14 now and has just been diagnosed with diabetes. We're so good at giving him insulin now I"m a pro :).Anyway, I'd have 10 himalayans if I could, these are the best breed. The siamese gives the himalayan the beautiful markings but fortunately the personality of the himalayan comes from the persion; what a perfect combination.Everyone that sees Tiffy thinks she's the most gorgeous cat and she's got the disposition of a complete sweetheart. She loves to be brushed and we often get her groomed in a lion cut which not only looks darling but keeps the shedding down too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking of adding a "Himmie" to your home???A Must Have!!
After cat sitting my grandson's "Adorable Himmie" for six weeks last summer, I was completely in love with these unique little creatures.
I have ALWAYS had a dog as a pet, currently a Yorkie Poo, and repeatedly
stated I would NEVER have a Cat...I didn't like cats...That was before I met "Oshkosh."Well, to make a long story short, I googled "Amazon" found several books about Himalayan Cats and other informational books. They all were used books, excellent condition, very informative and aided me in my decision to purchase a lilac point Himalayan kitten, Mr. Periwinkle, and I continue to buy cat books from Amazon.Do the same, you will be pleased.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good - could have gone deeper
Some important data about vaccination, standards, colors and behavior. Could have more specifical details on neutering (what age) and so on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have never owned a cat before
The book was well written. Chapters are informative for general information on keeping and caring for cats. however, the book was so general that i think they had a word document formated so all they had to do was insert the word Himalayan before the word cat throughout the book.

the only specifics in this book related to Himalayans is the pedigree origination, and only in very simple terms, and grooming long haired cats and is generally applicable to any long hair cat.

however, the book is loaded with really pretty color pictures of a diverse assortment of Himalayans.

If you want a picture book with Himalayan cat pics and general cat information this is the book for you.

If you are a breeder or looking to show Himies definitley look elsewhere, or you will be frustated that you spent the time and money on this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for first time Birman owners not breeders
This book is a good book covering the Basics of Birmans but begins to fall short when talking about breeding and the genetics of Birman cats.I love the care/feeding and general information of the book. A true book about breeding however should include pedigrees, history and foundation cats, and include medical information as well. My wife and I have bred Birmans for 11 years and as such have to consider genetic questions whenever we talk about breeding/aquiring another birman. The book also should include online information available for Birmans which is extensive. ... Read more

Product Description

The Toveys attempt to settle down to quiet life in the country. Unfortunately, their tyrannical Siamese cats have other ideas. From causing an uproar on the BBC to claiming to have been kidnapped, Sheba and Solomon's outrageous behavior leaves the Toveys at their wits' end. Meanwhile, Doreen has to contend with her husband's disastrous skills as a handyman, a squirrel that chews the buttons off all his suits, and a runaway tortoise named Tarzan. Both human and animal characters come to life on the page in these witty stories, including Sidney, the problem-prone gardener, and Blondin, the brandy-swilling squirrel.

In a new edition, with 20 delightful black and white illustrations, Tovey’s tales are ready for rediscovery by a new generation of cat lovers. A truly enjoyable read for anyone who's ever been owned by a cat, it will tickle your funny bone and tug on your heartstrings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doreen Tovey and Siamese Highjinks!
Doreen Tovey's book Cats in May is a hilarious account of the misadventures of Doreen and husband Charles, their pet squirrel Blondin, and their Siamese cats.Do not miss this book if you love or have Siamese cats.Tovey is English and occasionally refers to people/things with which we Americans are not familiar, but not often. Her stories are extremely funny and her books are keepers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Even
Doreen Tovey is a woman who knows how to get her own back. A husband, squirrel and Siamese cats combined and separately wreck havoc in her life. With her books she unmasks the culprits and leaves the reader laughing out loud.
Sometimes those readers even go get their own Siamese cats just to enjoy the fun for themselves.
I will warn readers that Tovey is English and her books will contain references that leave US readers scratching their heads. She also uses the English language in the manner of writers such as Dorothy Sayers and P.G. Wodehouse. Again this might cause some puzzlement. A little puzzlement in order to get a lot of laughs is well worth it to some of us.
For some of us Blondin, Salomon and Sheba become life long friends.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cats in May
The book left me feeling that I know no more about Doreen, Charles and their cats than before I started reading the book. I just never managed to connect with Tovey's writing style and the chapters had the feeling of being stories that were only funny if one had been there. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a good introduction
I was given this book when I was given my cat, Mara Jade. The book was for 2 main reasons. One was to explain and understand this most loveable breed. The other was to show off my cat's grandfather, who is one of the champion Scottish Folds showcased in the book. It is a good book for new owners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems more like a textbook than an earnest owner's manual
I recently bought a Scottish Fold. (Partly because they look so darn cute and partly -- okay mostly -- because of Peter Gether's Norton books.) Being the "completist" that I am (some prefer the term obsessive), I had to buy this book too to make sure all was well with Bradbury (yeah, he's named after the famous author).

Unfortunately, Maggitti's book doesn't really satisfy my passion and curiosity for this fascinating breed of feline.

For one thing, the book seems slightly outdated. And the pages look -- and often read -- like those of a textbook. Plus, the information seems superficial, almost too basic (even for a feline newbie like myself).

In other words, don't expect a lot of passion and humor and a breezy, conversational style. Expect some fairly good information. Expect a slightly detached (read: dry) presentation of facts. Expect a reference book that'll likely sit on your shelf gathering dust once you've flipped through it once.

Since there are very few books available strictly about the Scottish Fold breed, you're pretty much stuck with this book or nothing. And, given that choice, I'd say go ahead and buy this book. It's really not as bad as I'm making it out to be. (But it's not a whole lot better, either.)

The bottom line: Until someone comes along to write an "owner's manual" book as fun as the Scottish Fold breed of cat, I suggest you turn to Peter Gether's three books: The Cat Who Went To Paris...A Cat Abroad: The Further Adventures of The Cat Who Went to Paris and His Human...and The Cat Who'll Live Forever: The Final Adventures of Norton, The Perfect Cat and His Imperfect Human.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for owners of Scottish Fold cats or kittens.
As new owners of this unique breed, we needed a book that explained everything from care to communication and personality. This book has it all.Especially helpful was the section on communication where we learnednot only how to communicate with our new Fold, but also what our Fold wastelling us through his body language. This book definitely helped uswelcome our pet into his new home, and facilitated bonding between pet andowner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best $15 spent on my cats
As a life-long cat owner, I am always frustrated with how many owners give up on training their cats so quickly and easily (or just write them off because they are cats). Cats loved to be challenged and this book lays out easy and appropriate ways to teach and train, fix behavioral problems, and gently discipline your cat. Yes it takes patience, but both you and your cat will find it well worth the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars HOW TO GET YOUR CAT TO DO WHAT YOU WANT
I found this book to be a bit over the top.The authors suggest extreme measures for control of undesirable cat behaviorsrequiring strict attention to detail. I love my rescue kitten dearly who is 5 months old now, but some ideas offered in this book seem unrealistic for me. I do believe the authors have the best interest of the cat in their strategies; however, I think some of the methods require impossible amounts of time. For those of us who are very disciplined, go for it!

2-0 out of 5 stars TOO cute... and I mean that literally
I had a hard time getting past the author's mania for adorable little furballs. Here's an example: "Are your well-deserved vacations spoiled because you just can't cope with the anxiety of leaving behind the little furball?". Those of you who answer yes will probably enjoy reading the book from cover to cover. Everyone else will do better looking up topics of interest, or reading a different book altogether. Having said that, there is some good information here, and an important message that you will be a better cat owner if you try to understand the cat's perspective. I suggest reading the Publishers Weekly review quoted by Amazon, because that nails it.

2-0 out of 5 stars My Kitties Of Mass Destruction
Hmmmm... this book was a little too warm and fuzzy for me, and my cats still don't do what I want them to do.I like to call them my kitties of mass destruction.

I know the above statement doesn't really offer any constructive criticism so let me see if I can put into words what I didn't like about this book.Warren and Fay seem to be very caring and compassionate animal lovers but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of practical advice regarding getting cats to do what you want.

There were however, lots of cute stories about their animals sprinkled with a bit of advice - most of which I'd already heard. It was a nice read if you like animals (which I do) but not much help in the whole "getting them to do what you want" area.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fluffy book about "Fluffy"
I found this book uninformative and a waste of money.I'm sorry that I din't buy a used book. This book was too cute with too many cute stories.I was more interested in learning about cat behavioral problems and how to solve them.I lost patience with this book.A very silly book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE
Very good book with lots of information about this beautiful cat. Definately worth buying and the best around.Hope to see a newer version soon. Think this was written in 1995.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book on Abyssinian cats
I believe I have already reviewed his book.At any rate, it arrived promptly and was in good condition. It is a very informative book on Abyssinian cats which are not like any other kind of cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abyssinian Cats
Wonderful book. Takes you through the beginnings of the breed and how it came to North America. Detailed information about standard physical expectations for show; personality traits of the breed; price ranges; how to pick a breeder--questions to ask; how to pick a kitten; important care instructions--physical and emotional; ..... lots of great stuff for the new Aby owner as well as those who have owned cats and/or Abys in the past. Beautiful photos! Great reading! A bit pricey, but worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars People should read books like this BEFORE selecting kitty!
I recommend that anyone considering being owned by an Abyssinian read this book (the info is enlightening for already owned people as well). It covers in easily understood language everything one should know aboutAbyssinian Cats and how to care for them.It is simply enough written tobe understood by children though not boring to adults. It could be used asa teaching tool for children in the home where kitty will live. The authorstarts at the beginning:How to buy the cat, acclimation, caring for it"Forever After," etc.She discusses controversial issues such asdeclawing (I'm personally opposed), grooming, showing, etc.The generalcare information would apply to most cats. But Abyssinians are veryintelligent, loyal, inquisitive and active. If you want a cat that willNOT sit on the refrigerator, then perhaps this book would give the readersome understanding of the personality of the Abyssinian and guide thepropsective cat owner toward making a good decision about whether or not toselect this particular breed or another, less active, breed.Plenty ofgood photos. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Images to coo over, the captions are the reality
This book is one that cat lovers will adore, almost to the extent to which they exalt their cats. The pictures are superb and the captions truly capture the role of cats in the world. My favorite caption is "In ancient times, cats were worshipped as gods; they have never forgotten this." This totally sums up the mystique and lure of cats. They are loving one minute and aloof from the world the next. When they want attention, they are as persistent as ice in the arctic but if you call them, they might come to you, but only if they find it convenient. This is summed up in the caption, "If cats could talk, they wouldn't." This is a truly enjoyable book. ... Read more
