Editorial Review

Product Description
In Hip and Trivial, historian Robert Wright challenges the pervasive stereotype of young Canadians as addicts of televisual media who are fundamentally alienated from print culture.Variously identified as "slackers," "whiners" and, of course, "Gen Xers" - a term that now signifies a dizzying array of intellectual, emotional and social defects - Canadians who came of age in the late 1980s and the 1990s live in a socio-cultural space circumscribed by two stereotypes. On the one hand, they are believed to be violent, apathetic, depoliticized, suicidal, deviant, criminal - in a word, alien. On the other, they are commonly thought to be the products of the hyper-commercialization of youth culture in the age of "cool hunting," Tommy Hilfiger and designer consumerism.Arguing that the stigmatization of youth as illiterate and culturally benighted is an element in a more generalized assault upon youth culture under neo-conservatism, Wright assesses what it means to be young, powerless and downwardly mobile in contemporary Canada, and to occupy such condescending cultural spaces.Examining the rise of "Canadian Lit" and "Kid Lit" since the 1970s, and the more recent emergence of a powerful consensus among Canadians that reading ought to be an essential component of family life, Hip and Trivial demonstrates that young people in Canada have been extremely well served by the nation's "culture of literacy" as it has taken shape over the last thirty years.Youth today do not read less, or less voraciously, than their elders, Wright argues, but the historic linkages between youth, reading and citizenship - so characteristic of the literary nationalism of the baby boomers - no longer obtains. However much they may mystify the keepers of the canon, for young Canadians living in a postmodern, globalized world of seemingly infinite cultural choice, reading has largely ceased to be a patriotic act. ... Product Description
The Siglit, or Mackenzie Inuit, the ancestors of the modern Inuvialuit, were, at the time of Euroamerican contact, the most populous and complex Inuit society in the Canadian Arctic. Through innovative analysis of animal bones recovered from their ancient archaeological sites, this comprehensive study documents the complex relationships between the Mackenzie Inuit and their food animals, and tracks these connections over some 800 years, from their earliest occupations to the arrival of Europeans in the 19th century.

Methodological in focus, this study examines the way in which archaeologists integrate animal remains into their analyses and proposes a systematic methodology for evaluating faunal data against other archaeological information. This volume chronicles the relationship between developing Siglit economic strategies and shifts in technology, settlement strategies, demography, and climate, exposing in the process the primary link between Siglit culture and their subsistence practices. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mary of Canada
Mary of Canada is part art, part spirituality, part history, and part geography book. The author explores associations of the Virgin Mary throughout various aspects of Canadian culture. In undertaking these explorations, the author finds traces of Mary in some very unusual places. One would expect a religious symbol to appear in Catholic churches, cemeteries, and other religiously influenced locations. Statues, paintings, stained glass, and other related works do appear in such locations across Canada. However, the Mary influences I found most intriguing were in secular situations. For instance, the rose as a symbol of Mary or towns, rivers, colleges, and universities named for the Virgin Mary. I also found the use of Mary in advertising quite interesting.

Mary of Canada is beautifully put together with a little something for everyone. The pictures are incredible. I was also impressed by the amount and depth of research that the author put into this text. I had no idea that the Virgin Mary was so entrenched in Canadian history or culture. Many of the things the author mentions, I would not have even thought of as Mary influences until I read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring images and evocations of the Virgin
Engagingly illustrated with compelling black-and-white photographs, Mary Of Canada: The Virgin Mary In Canadian Culture, Spirituality, History, And Geography by journalist and author Joan Skogan is a thoughtful and original study of the Virgin Mary's perception, incorporation, and frequent presence in Canadian culture. Exploring images and evocations of the Virgin in Canadian literature, history, art, and geography, Skogan deftly takes the reader on an imaginative and engaging tour through Canadian history, the human heart, and Christian spirituality. ... Product Description
"Canadian Literature at the Crossroads of Language and Culture" is the first book to gather together essays by Barbara Godard, one of the leading and most prolific figures in the field of Canadian studies. Godard has long been one of the most influential readers of Canadian literature. Much of the force of her work comes from her meticulous and relentless attention to the networks that produce both the texts and events we study and the methods through which we read them. Whether she writes about feminist theory, orality and Native women writers, or the exigencies of the cultural field, she has been instrumental in interrogating, time and time again, the normative ways in which we think about Canadian culture. From the function of literature to the materiality of institutions and periodicals, from the theory and practice of translation to the interrelations between English and French Canadian literatures, her critical interventions have drastically reconceptualised our inherited understandings of Canadian culture. ...
