Product Description
In their drive to maximize profits, Canadian publishers abandoned partisan politics and adopted sensationalistic journalism to build audiences for advertisers. "From Politics to Profit" analyses the decisive period in which newspapers changed in content and appearance as the number of "fluff" pieces increased and hard news stories decreased, headlines became larger, prose became simpler, and illustrations and photographs became more abundant. Minko Sotiron highlights the increasingly powerful role of the press barons - Lord Atholstan, John Ross Robertson, Joseph Atkinson, Walter Nichol, Clifford Sifton, and the Southam family. He provides a case study of the first Canadian newspaper chain, which formed the basis for modern mass communication empires, and shows how the Southams contributed to the disappearance of independent newspapers in Canada. ... Interdisciplinarity is the hallmark of Fishing Places, Fishing People. It proposes a radically different way of thinking about our current fishery problems and lays the groundwork for an alternative management approach to the fisheries.Comprised of entirely new material, the collection brings together the work of many highly-regarded scholars - historians, biologists, sociologists, anthropologists, consultants, geographers, and ecologists - to discuss this topical issue.Using case studies drawn from across Canada, they demonstrate that there are many shared issues in the various small-scale fisheries of this country, and locate Canadian small-scale fisheries in their historical context as well as in that of global ecological and policy concerns. ... From the supplier: The American Express Survey of Canadian Business Travel Management reveals that business travel spending among Canadian companies doubled from $6.2 billion in 1987 to $13 billion in 1997. The growing presence of Canadian companies in foreign markets makes travel as a strategic investment for infiltrating new markets and creating global alliances. Findings also showed that travel is no longer the exclusive activity of senior executives, with 40% of employees making a minimum of one business trip annually, as compared to only 28% in 1994. The average travel and entertainment expenditure for Canadian companies was found to be $9,500 per traveller. Business travel management has become a major concern for corporate decisionmakers, with cost control ranked as the top travel management objective among the companies surveyed.
