Very Good Guide
This is a nicely practical, easy-to-use guide.I kept the 1995 edition in my car for several years, and was never disappointed as it helped me find houses, parks, businesses, etc.This guide provides many indepth-detailed maps covering every neighborhood, suburb, specific street, main park, rail line, etc.Please remember to first consult the large Chicago area map to discover what page you need should you require detailed information (the larger Chicago Area map is often all you need).I gave this atlas just four stars because it should include ALL of Indiana's Lake & Porter Counties, plus Kenosha County (Wisconsin), whereChicagoland has expanded.Still, this is a very useful, detailed, practical guide.

Chicago 7-County Street Guide
I moved out of Chicago in 1969.When I found out I was to return for a week I figured things had changed a bit (especially my memory).I was right on both counts but the street guide never failed me.In all honesty, I would have rated it a 5 if the text had been a bit bigger for my "senior" eyes.However, all maps are a compromise of some sort and larger text would have made the 7 counties unusable in a modern car.

Looks like a winner.
I purchased this for my college grad daughter who is relocating to Chicago with a new job.At first glance, we both think it looks quite thorough with good detail.I'm sure that it will help her find her way around with much less difficulty and (hopefully) stay safe and out of harm's way.It is cross-referenced well to the smaller area maps so it's easy to follow, and covers most of the Chicago area and nearby communities from Wisconsin to Indiana state lines.

For Amazon's price, the hopeful avoidance of unnecessary (expensive) miles and frustrations, and the convenience of spiral binding, I recommend this purchase for someone moving to or traveling frequently in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Great & unique reference work
I'm a science journalist, and have no shortage of access to excellent science and excellent reference sources on a huge range of topics. But after finding a copy of this in my organization's library, I went out of my way to buy my own copy, and it will have a critical place in my personal reference library for a long time.

The range of topics is excellent, the maps and information graphics are (for the most part) very well done, and the text succinctly summarizes key science in a broad range of subject areas.

Definitely worth the price -- I'm thrilled to have this.

A great introduction but a little dry
This book is an excellent introduction to environmental issues from the standpoint of population and its impact on the environment.

It has interesting case studies from around the globe and engaging illustrations that really convey an understanding of the state of the world.However, I would have liked to see a more prescriptive section with recommendations for action as well.

I recommend checking out the table of contents on the "Look inside" link, because the TOC is very representative in this book's case.I also recommend checking out World Resources 2000-2001, the companion book to Bill Moyers' series "Earth on Edge."It's perhaps a bit more engaging although not as focused on population. ... The Picture of Health is worth 1000 Words
You've seen the usual atlas that shows a map of the world or a country.

This book takes flat, boring columnar data related to health and the causes of disease and turns it into fascinating color maps. They show the world, based on life expectancy, violence, impact of global warming, illnesses like cancer, respiratory disease, HIV/AIDS, tobacco, alcohol use, unhealthy diet, access to health care...

And the images show surprising, enlightening findings.

This book is pure fact and data, yet it kept me up the night I received it, reading just one more page.

Seeing the data visualized in color maps makes it so clear just how brutally the industrialized world is inflicting the death and illness causes by climate change upon the third world.

We see how the US is one of the most violent nations in the world, at least when it comes to murders of males. The safest places for males, in terms of murdered men per 100,000 are France, Switzerland and Japan.We can see that China is addicted to tobacco more than almost any other nation.And the most suicidal nations are Russia and Eastern Europe.

This is an obvious gem for people doing international work-- not just in health. It's good to know where the violence is in the world, where the life expectancy is under 40 years, where the doctors available per 10,000 people is a tiny fraction of what it is in most of the world.

It makes sense that a book that displays health measures would measure the use of health measures. In this case, it displays a map of world, displaying which countries count what percentage of deaths. The US, Europe, Australia, Argentina, Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Uruguay measure 100%. Much of the world records less than 25%, including, not suprisingly, if I may get political, Iraq.

I can even see this book as useful to marketers seeking to identify markets for products and services.

The planet is overflowing with numbers and raw data. If all of it could be displayed in such meaningful, insightful ways, we would understand the world and each other much better. ... Read more

Very little information about corals!
Having purchased Green and Short's "World Atlas of Seagrasses", also from California Press, I was quite excited to find this volume.Green and Short describe nearly all of the world's seagrasses, complete with line drawings and species comparisons, and map their distribution.They also include info on preservation, destruction, etc.It is an invaluable resource for anyone needing to identify or locate seagrasses.I was disappointed, however, when I received "World Atlas of Coral Reefs".The entire text is devoted to describing areas where reefs are found, but rarely mentions anything about the corals themselves!I saw listed more often than any coral genus!If you want to learn about the per capita fish consumption of Mauritius or phosphate mining on the atoll of Nauru, this is the book for you.If, however, you are interested in corals and the reefs that they construct (which is probably why you are reading this) you should move on to another book.

A Great Resource for Divers
I bought this book for the maps and descriptions of reef conditions.It has helped me be prepared for my next destination as a scuba diver and I also use it to pick new places to explore. Recommended

I bought this for my daughter, a graduating Biologist, but it was so fascinating that I'm afraid she got a slightly used book. It covers all coral reefs anywhere in the world. The maps are superb, as are the color photographs of the reefs. Each reef had a discussion of conditions in the reef, and the life that grows there. It's a huge book but one starts wishing for more; more maps, more photos, more detail. Maybe in the next edition, but meanwhile we can enjoy this superb book just as it. ... Read more

Helpful and basic
I found this book very helpful, if a little lack-luster, in teaching a unit on Africa to my 6th grader.It has good drawings and photographs, and a nice section on African history.Of course, it is too small a book to cover anything very deeply, but it was an excellent first step for a broad overview.

This book is well written and explaining about whole African continent from emergence of man in Africa, its language family, religion to art with lots of pictures. It gives you a good idea what is like as a whole.Information on each country, however, written in the latter half, is alittle too brief. It only explains history and general information such aspopulation and capital, etc. If it could provide us more information oncultural differences in each country in order to let us know how they live,for example, their diet, housing conditions, education systems, fashions,festivals, it would be much more informational and vivid. An Essential Guidebook to Our World's Changing Spiritual Diversity
This book should be on the shelves of every clergy person and every teacher in social sciences or humanities.

Actually seeing the shifting shapes and patterns of religious movements around the world explains a whole lot about global culture, barriers to be overcome -- and, sadly, conflict as well.

The data here come from many sources around the world and the authors do a good job of explaining where they got their facts and statistics. But, this is NOT a book just for clergy and teachers. Every double-page spread is planned to provide easy access for ordinary readers with fascinating secondary details sprinkled through the pages.

It's not necessarily designed for group study, but I would urge creative teachers in religious and secular settings to use it in that way. Invite students to select regions of the world or cultural groups to focus on through the week, then share their information with others at the next class.

After 30-plus years as a professional in traditional American news media myself, I'm well aware that our traditional methods for covering the world are shrinking in this new century. Newspapers, TV networks and other publications are cutting back on their global bureaus -- and they're shrinking the number of subjects that they cover, as well.

Just when we should be learning more and more about the diverse cultures around the world -- we have fewer and fewer avenues through traditional media to explore our world.

A huge "Thank You" to Joanne O'Brien and Martin Palmer. Their "Atlas" is a superb effort at making sense of the confusing world of faith. ... Read more

Good value for money
First, disadvantages:
- too few maps and those available are with a small scale, so one can get only a rough idea about the changes on the word and especially European political maps within the century;
- the timeline doesn't contain the exact dates wherever it is possible (months, at best).

Meanwhile, all in all, due to the brilliant and concise annotation it is worth keeping for reference even by advanced students of this period. I also consider it good value for money

Awesome introduction
Most history books that I have read have far too few maps to help you visualize the events that you're reading about. Moreover, these books do not provide a quick overview so that you can appreciate the long-term trends and the significance of some arcane details.

This book solves both problems. It is extremely simplistic with few details, but provides maps (thank you) and an overview of the major trends (thanks again). If you plan to study any aspect of the 20th century in detail, start with this book first.

FYI, this book is actually just the last chapter (of 6) taken from "Atlas of World History" by the same author. If you're concerned about portability, then buy this lightweight volume. Otherwise, get the entire book, which starts at 10,000 BC and runs through the present -- and only costs $20. It's an INCREDIBLE bargain!

While these maps do not go into great and glorious detail, they do provide an excellent overview for students or lovers of 20th century history. Published in full color, therea are good keys, timelines for each map, brief explanations of historic events, world, regional and detail maps divided by era. On July 29, 1681, a band of English buccaneers that had been terrorizing Spanish possessions on the west coast of the Americas captured a Spanish ship, from which they obtained a derrotero, or book of charts and sailing directions. When they arrived back in England, the Spanish ambassador demanded that the buccaneers be brought to trial. The derrotero was ordered to be brought to King Charles II, who apparently appreciated its great intelligence value. A nice reference book that covers all of WWII with maps and key events
This is a great reference book and one of my favorites. It can be useful for students first reading about the war or for old pros as a quick reference. Its a fairly large book at 12 in by 9 in. Its format is a chronologicaltimeline that includes all military theaters. It begins at the end of WWI and works its way to post war problems up to just before the Korean War. Many listings are military- land sea and air but there are also listings on politics, concentration camps, the bomb etc. These event listings are not just a few words but a meaningful description that you can understand and appreciate.In addition to these event listings, there are maps that give greater meaning to the text. The maps are large and easy to read with a wealth of info included. Most of the maps are full page or near full page that contains relevant cities, rivers etc.There are footnotes at the bottom of each page that helps the reader following a particular timeline. Say you wanted to study only the Russian front, the footnotes would lead you to the next relevant chronological page in the progression. This system is unique; I've never seen it in any other book. The table of contents is easy to follow and is an easy means of finding specific events.
There is a comprehensive index that also helps you find what you need. There is also a page listing additional reading if your so inclined.
I highly recommend this book, especially for beginners or casual readers who do not have or want many books on the war. The book is easy to use, has descriptive listings and useful maps. ... Read more

Another in Derek Hayes's series of atlases
The phrase "historical atlas" has two distinct meanings; one, the very literal sense of a collection of original maps organized in chronological order and, second, a collection of maps that describes the development of a region. In the first type, the maps are basically the entire story, and are a series of snapshots of a region as seen by the developer of the map at the time of publication. In the second type, the maps are illustrative of broad trends and developments over time, and the entirety speaks at the time of publication.

This excellent compilation is of the first type, beautifully presented maps supplemented by drawings and some photographs, showing the west at various periods of time as the people living at the time saw the area. If you love cartography and are willing to supplement the collection with supplemental histories putting the maps in their context, you will greatly enjoy this book.

As Hayes writes: "'Almost every map in this book is a contemporary one; that is, it was drawn or published at the time of the event it depicts. As such, the maps offer a unique view - the West the explorer understood, perhaps indistinctly or inaccurately; a planned route for a railroad that might differ from what was actually built; or explanations of projects, often shown in imaginative ways.'

There is a bit of overlap between this book and the excellent Historical Atlas of California as is evident from the title of the two books.

Derek Hayes is Canadian, and it is not surprising to find a sprinkling of Canadian maps in the collection. For example, Hayes illustrates the journey of Canada's most famous explorer, Alexander Mackenzie, who in 1793 became the first person to cross the continent of North America north of Mexico. His First Crossing: Alexander Mackenzie, His Expedition Across North America, and the Opening of the Continent tells that story in much more detail.

If you enjoy old maps and are willing to dig into other resources to place maps in their historical contexts using the excellent bibliography contained in this book, you are sure to enjoy Hayes's latest contribution to cartography.

a excellant book for beginers
I like this book although it might lack certain information on several important battles in medieval europe it does however make up with it's beautiful illustrations. I would say this is a good book for people who want to make it simple, and for the serious reader I suggest reading Medieval Warfare: A History. In all even to some it might be a tad bit steep but you wouldnt be disappointed.

Excellent reference
This book, and its companion, covering The Middle Ages, 768-1487 and Renaissance to Revolution, 1492-1792, though with different authors, form an elegant pair of references. They cover a period that is infrequently covered in much detail, and rarely illustrated with any maps, much less the excellent examples here. My primary use for these books is as aids when reading both history and, even more, historical fiction such as Sharon Kay Penman, Dorothy Dunnett and Neal Stephenson. These authors write intricately plotted tapestries that rely heavily on movements in historical time, but their publishers include only incidental maps.These volumes supply a much needed reference for readers who are not quite au courant with the 3rd Anglo Dutch War, or the rise of Maratha India. The accompanying text gives an adequate survey of the time, but the primary emphasis is `rightly on the illustrated portion. Awesome general overview of medieval warfare.
This is really one of the best general books on medieval warfare I have seen.It has two great advantages:

First, it covers the overall strategies of campaigns throughout the ages, with insight into motivations, logistics, tactics, and the like.Few major wars are ignored, and the level of depth pursued is great enough for all but the foremost researchers on the topic.

Second, the book has awesome illustrations representing both overall campaign strategies and the tactics utilized in individual battles.Combined with the detailed descriptions, this has offered me the most insight into how medieval battles were carried out and won.

I highly recommend this book to anyone at all interested in medieval warfare.

Needed more discussion on the Islamic history
Although the term "Middle Ages" often referred to the European age of transistion, other important events went on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea where Islamic science and culture advanced beyondwestern's comprehension. Apart from the short descriptions on Reconquista,Crusades, and Ottoman Empire (Devlet?), not much were looked into themaking of Islamic history.

As with all history textbooks, the truth is nary found
History most usually is told by one side, and taught by another side. Book was a gift to immigrants from South Africa.

The men without a country
Rarely have I seen a better example of intellectual elites' skewing data to advance a political view--in this case, the loathing of America.Everything the authors could get their hands on, from early settlement, to the causes of the Civil War, to the continued exploitation of differences in American society today, is used to give the impression that America was founded upon hate and injustice, and has prospered only by the exaltation of vice and the plunder of the weak.If there is an example of goodness and virtue that resulted from the American experiment in freedom, I can't find it in this book.Pity Carnes, Garraty, and Williams.

A different view of American History
Finally, a historical atlas with the imagination to look beyond the requisite but unilluminating maps of wars, battles, and westward expansion to the rich territory of social history.Urban sprawl and white flight, ethnic politics, prostitution, the death penalty, segregation, civil rights, and many others all put in an appearance here.Some of the maps, while seemingly provincial in their coverage (WPA projects in Erie, PA, for example) are effectively used to illustrate broader points about the geography of American history.My only complaint is that in quite a few places, some sloppy editing (mistaken keys, mismarked captions, etc.) has marred the otherwise excellent cartography.

Mapping America's Past
Mapping America's Past is an attempt at using maps to portray American social, economic, military, and political development.The maps that are included are excellent, but what was included is somewhat puzzling.The general analysis of wars, expansion, and elections are useful, but maps of political party development in the Cleveland area or prostitution in New York City are not entirely relevant to the general American history student.Similarly, many of the accompanying texts offer little detailed insight into the topics the maps cover.

This book should be considered a general resource, but for an in-depth historical atlas, the reader must look elsewhere.

Sensational cartographic rendering of American history
A highly satisfying review of historical topics.I'm often able to read only in 20-minute bites; every spread of this book is a self-contained history lesson, accessible in 20 minutes but worth revisiting many times. Most important topics and events of American history are covered well, andthe rendering of complex information (e.g. the six gauges of railroad in1850 and how this incompatablity affected commerce, population andpolitical power) is truly inspired.
