Evolution is usually defined either as the adaptation of species to their surrounding environment(s) over time or as the theory that life on Earth gradually developed from simple to more complex organisms. In fact, all organisms on the Earth today are the products of billions of years of evolution from single-celled bacteria to the most advanced animals. Life may have started and died out several times before it became permanently established. The oldest known evidence of life has been found in 3.8 billion year old Greenland rock; the oldest known fossil evidence are organisms similar to blue-green algae founed in Australia and estimated to be about 3.5 billion years old. Extractions: Classical Archaeology ... Medieval Latin Concentrators in the Classics are expected to have read the entire Undergraduate Reading List (or the portions of it that are appropriate to their concentration options) before taking the General Examination. The translation parts of the General Examination are designed in such a way that passages both from the Undergraduate Reading List and not from it must be chosen for translation. Successful performance on the former group is required for a passing grade in the translation section. Wide reading in the original beyond the prescibed list is the best preparation for the passages not taken from the Reading List. This reading may be done in courses, in tutorials, and on one's own. The half of the General Examinations devoted to literary history and criticism demands a far more extensive familiarity with classical literature and its background than is provided by the Undergraduate Reading List. Reading, in translation, of the major works of the authors who appear on the Undergraduate Reading List is expected. Knowledge of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics , for example, is necessary for a proper understanding of the discussion of tragedy in his Poetics . In accordance with the interests of individual students, it is assumed that selections will be read from other important figures as well. On the Greek side these might include the pre-Socratic philosophers, Menander, Polybius, later philosophers and orators, Plutarch or Lucian; on the Latin side, Lucilius, Quintilian, Statius, other writers of epic, Suetonius or Apuleius. Wider familiarity with texts in the original language will also help with this half of the General Examination, just as careful reading of works in translation is likely to be an aid in the translation of sight passages in the other half.

Extractions: Collections Overviews Home Master List of Collections Overviews Scope General Research Strengths Areas of Distinction Weaknesses/Exclusions This overview describes research collections in classics (in its broadest definition), Byzantine studies, and mediaevalia. These areas of study can be thought of as those dealing with the peoples and cultures influenced by two groups of Indo-European speakers, namely, the Greeks and the Romans. In addition, this overview also extends to all relevant portions of the ancillary disciplines needed for research in these areas. These disciplines include archaeology, art, literature, philosophy, numismatics, history, anthropology, and linguistics. The Library of Congress is a major center for the studies as outlined above. Classics have been with this institution since its very inceptionboth the first and the replacement Jefferson libraries were heavy with classical works and one can even see Mr. Jefferson's handwritten corrections in the margins of his Greek and Latin works. This continued throughout the nineteenth century, which also witnessed the growth in the discipline and in its scientific developmentfrom textual criticism to archaeological methodology. The collection at the Library of Congress, by its sheer quantity, must be viewed as one of major proportions for these studies in the United States. The hallmark of the collection, of course, is the general collection. From texts of the authors, to translations, commentaries, historical discussions, excavation reports, reference works to collections of inscriptions, vases, sculptures, etc., it is a vast and still growing collection, although with noticeable gaps.ibrary of the Annotated Card program, bibliographic access to children's books has been further strengthened.

However, he did not invade Ireland, nor did the legions of Rome ever raise their banners over the fertile plains of Ulster or the rocky pastures of Connemara. Ireland remained beyond the political frontiers of Rome during the centuries when the empire controlled nearby Britain and Gaul; nevertheless, there was steady contact between Ireland and the classical world. Literary and archaeological evidence show that Ireland was known to the Greeks and Romans for hundreds of years, and that Mediterranean goods, and even travelers, found their way to Ireland, while the Irish at least occasionally visited, traded, and raided in Roman lands.
