This topic focuses on the behaviour of molecular systems that lead to periodic behaviour, e.g., in cells and in hormonal systems, bifurcation, or other dynamical results that are closely linked with the function of the cell. Signal transduction and calcium dynamics with their implications for cellular behaviour, as well as cellular and intra- cellular oscillations and feedback will form the main theme. The cellular cytoskeleton . The role that mathematicians who have studied detailed experimental systems have played in understanding the details of the cell will be highlighted. An example is the detailed demonstration of the involvement of various parts of the structure of the cytoskeleton in key steps of the developmental process of a drosophila embryo. Molecular motors to muscle motion . The mathematical analysis of molecular motors and the role which such analysis plays in understanding the way that molecular motors work will be described. Experimental biologists have studied muscles for some time, and they now are developing an understanding of how motor aggregates (myosin) arrayed along a one dimensional filament work cooperatively to produce muscle motion. The following is the basic template for a terrorist organism that has been followed for years. This is, of course, just a template, a classic model if you will. There can be variations. Bin Ladens al Qaeda terrorist network is based on this template, but it, like many of these networks, do not follow the hierarchy so rigidly. There are often cells that communicate with each other that normally would not under the classic model. Read on, and youll see what I mean. The problem is, even then, you might deeply wound the organism, but you wont necessarily kill it. All of the other cells have been nurtured in an environment that promotes autonomy. After all, if any one cell is captured, you dont want all of the cells under it to disappear in confusion once they stop receiving communication. Cells often plan attacks all on their own without being ordered to. Say Cell 1 recruits several cells. One of those cells, Cell 2, in turn recruits Cell 3. If Cell 2 is captured, then Cell 1 merely recruits more cells. Cell 3, meanwhile, no longer receives communication from above, but continue to plot attacks and itself recruiting new cells. Cell 3 has now become the head of a newly independent organism that acts independently of the original. Even if you cut off the original head, Cell 1, if any of the cells it recruited decide to continue on with business, then the organism will still live.

Extractions: The focus of this course is on the regulatory mechanisms involved in eukaryotic cell cycle progression and division. Several aspects of chromosome biology, including the structure and function of telomeres, centromeres and kinetochores, recombination and replication will be described. Mitotic and meiotic specific changes including spindle assembly, chromosome condensation, pairing and separation will also be discussed. Finally the biochemical basis for the regulation and coordination of these cell cycle events by cyclin dependent kinases, ubiquitin mediated proteolysis and cell cycle checkpoints will be described. Students in the departmental Ph.D. program select from a variety of research training opportunities ranging from the molecular to the whole organism. However, irrespective of the focus of the research project, the goals of the departmental graduate program are to provide a training environment in which original biomedical research of the highest quality is promoted that will prepare trainees for careers in the biomedical sciences (research, teaching, clinical in an academic or business environment). Members of the department also participate in anatomy, cell biology, histology, neuroscience/neuroanatomy courses for medical, allied health, undergraduate, and graduate students, and training is available for graduate students who are interested in acquiring teaching skills in the traditional anatomic sciences.

As a faculty we are researchers trained in a broad range of disciplines making original discoveries and communicating these findings to the national and international scientific communities. An important element of our research efforts is the training of graduate students for careers in academics as well as industry.
