William Hertrich's personal history of the Huntington Botanical Gardens has been a perennial favorite since its first publication in 1949, and this reprinted edition will captivate a whole new audience of readers. The book includes more than 150 black-and-white photos beginnign with the early 1900s, many of them taken by Hertrich himself. Product Description
An essential reference, this gorgeous book documents the magnificent botanical prints produced by notable artists of the 17th through the turn of the 20th centuries. Celebrated artists include Basil Besler, Maria Sybilla Merian, Mark Catesby, Georg Ehret, George Brookshaw, Robert John Thornton, Pierre Joseph Redout, and many others. Illustrated with over 300 full-color images of original and valuable botanical prints, this book fills a void in the literature, as few good botanical references remain in print. The text recounts the fascinating lives and passions of the artists and their patrons, the technical advances in printmaking, and the history and cultural influences that shaped the depiction of flowers, plants, and trees. Also discussed are many variables affecting the values of original antique botanical prints including condition, rarity, historical significance, and aesthetic appeal. A range of prices is included to guide you in your collecting and a section on framing, displaying, and proper storage makes this an indispensable reference. A fascinating book for collectors of botanical prints, gardeners, and those interested in the history of flowers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great souvenir and resource for the gardens
I visited the Huntington Museum in Pasadena last July not expecting all that much but was most impressed. I particularly enjoyed the scope and variety of their botanical gardens and so bought this book to remind myself of what I'd seen and also to learn more about the background of the gardens and how they came to be.

I was disappointed in no respect. The book provides historical photographs as well as an account of how Henry Huntington both earned his wealth and used it to establish this marvelous place. It goes on to provide sumptuous photographs of all parts of the gardens, covering both what's there and how they were established. Detail on the desert section and the Japanese section (my two favorites) were particularly appreciated. My only quibble is that a chapter on the notable trees is saved for the end, rather than covering the trees along with the location they belong to. This seems rather odd but is a minor note.

All in all, this book is a splendid souvenir and resource for the gardens of Huntington.

Product Description
"The hundreds of orchid genera and thousands of species can seem unbelievably complex, but they are beautiful, mysterious, and alluring. Therefore we want reliable ways in which to refer to them--ways that will be understood by those who hear us or read our written communications about these plants. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera will become a convenient reference for those many people who are fascinated by orchids. By referring to this guide, one can find a secure mooring for any species of orchid, one that makes it possible to understand its relatives and its place in the galaxy of orchid variation."--from the Foreword by Peter H. Raven

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera is the most comprehensive and extensively illustrated account of orchid genera to date. Its concise entries provide details of nomenclature, classification, original publication, etymology, and geographic range, along with a brief description and color images of representative flowers.

The dictionary describes not only all of the 850 orchid genera that are recognized today but also those genera known only from fossil records, published before Linnaeus, validly published (but not accepted), and invalidly published according to the standards of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, as well as those that have variant names or spellings. In addition to the alphabetic entries, this dictionary includes an introduction to orchid biology, a glossary, a list of taxonomists credited with publishing new orchid genera, key references and bibliographical abbreviation list, and the governing nomenclature rules. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera also features a Foreword by Peter H. Raven and an Introduction on the biology of orchids by David Benzing that describes the August 2007 discovery of the world's oldest unequivically orchidaceous fossil.

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida, are extensive botanical gardens dedicated to research and collections of epiphytes, especially orchids and bromeliads, and their canopy ecosystems. The Gardens maintain the most diverse collection of bromeliads in the world and feature over 20,000 plants from some 6,000 species in 1,200 genera from 214 plant families, including 6,000 live orchids. This monumental work is yet another manifestation of the collection-an extension of the Gardens into print. ... Read more

My wife asked me to order this book for her birthday.
I accidentally ordered two copies (maybe I double clicked?) of it.

My wife loves the book, and has shown it to her orchid species study group.

We donated the second copy to the curator of orchids at the San Diego Zoo.
That made me a real hero.It was already on her wish list.

Product Description

Once maligned as a swampy outpost, the fledgling city of Chicago brazenly adopted the motto Urbs in Horto or City in a Garden, in 1837. Chicago Gardens shows how this upstart town earned its sobriquet over the next century, from the first vegetable plots at Fort Dearborn to innovative garden designs at the 1933 World’s Fair.
Cathy Jean Maloney has spent decades researching the city’s horticultural heritage, and here she reveals the unusual history of Chicago’s first gardens. Challenged by the region’s clay soil, harsh winters, and fierce winds, Chicago’s pioneering horticulturalists, Maloney demonstrates, found imaginative uses for hardy prairie plants. This same creative spirit thrived in the city’s local fruit and vegetable markets, encouraging the growth of what would become the nation’s produce hub. The vast plains that surrounded Chicago, meanwhile, inspired early landscape architects, such as Frederick Law Olmsted, Jens Jensen, and O.C. Simonds, to new heights of grandeur.
Maloney does not forget the backyard gardeners: immigrants who cultivated treasured seeds and pioneers who planted native wildflowers. Maloney’s vibrant depictions of Chicagoans like “Bouquet Mary,” a flower peddler who built a greenhouse empire, add charming anecdotal evidence to her argument–that Chicago’s garden history rivals that of New York or London and ensures its status as a world-class capital of horticultural innovation.
With exquisite archival photographs, prints, and postcards, as well as field guide descriptions of living legacy gardens for today’s visitors, Chicago Gardens will delight green-thumbs from all parts of the world.

Product Description
To propose a botanical garden in one of the world's most rapidly expanding cities is of course a gesture that invokes ecological issues regarding sustainability and the conservation of plant life. The German landscape architect's planning group Valentien intend the garden that they are constructing, for Chenshan (Hill Chen) in the Song Jiang District of Shanghai (just outside the city center), to be such a gesture, as well as a model of plant conservation and scientific research development-and one of Shanghai's most ambitious landmarks. The project is enormous, and informed throughout by the architects' ecological imperatives: Energy-saving technologies are to be utilized in the garden's buildings (greenhouses, laboratories and education center) and renewable materials will be deployed throughout. The completion of Chenshan Botanic Garden is planned to coincide with the opening of EXPO 2010 in Shanghai; in the meantime, this book tracks the design process of this unique and bold landscaping project, extrapolating its conceptual infrastructure against an exploration of local conditions and expectations in Shanghai and its surrounding environs. ... Product Description
Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are pioneers in the use of photography in plant illustration. The Botanical Garden I and II, are exciting and thoroughly modern renditions of illustrated botany books. Ten years in the making, this set combines the finest in photography with up-to-date, expert commentary to bridge the gap between gardener-friendly books and scientific texts. In the tradition of the great botanical illustrations, each featured plant has been carefully photographed -- as a whole and in its parts -- against a white background to reveal the plant's physical characteristics in exacting detail.

Plants from more than 1,200 distinct groups are described -- from oaks to violets and water lilies to grasses -- and are presented in evolutionary order, from the most primitive to the most advanced. Each plant listing includes:
- Name: genus, species and common names, date of discovery, and range.
- Description: detailed and concise in the scientific style.
- Key Recognition Features.
- Ecology and Geography.
- Comment: cultivation needs plus notes about unusual hybrids or developments in the genus.

As a pair, the two volumes are an all-inclusive source of information and photographs of more than 2,000 genera of temperate plants. Thorough introductory text encompasses numerous themes in botany, from the history of plant development to current DNA studies that are revolutionizing plant classification. Each volume includes a detailed index and bibliography. The Botanical Garden I and II are exciting additions to a gardening bookshelf. They are visually rich and highly accurate references that will remain interesting, useful and current for many years. Offering a discerning insight into the relationship between garden plants and their natural environments and accuracy that is unequalled outside scientific circles, this duo are truly the modern heirs to a long history of botanical references. There are simply no other works of this kind available today.

About Volume I, Trees and Shrubs

Featuring 510 genera of temperate woody garden plants with full details of how they are related, their origins and uses, Volume I covers trees, shrubs and climbers. From plants dating to prehistory -- tree ferns, gingkoes and some conifers - to those more recently evolved, this volume includes early- flowering plants (magnolia and its family), catkin-bearing trees, fruit and nut trees, maples, the cordyline, palm and bamboo species, and many more advanced trees and shrubs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well above average
This is a pretty nice book. Of course it is always a relief to find a work without the ubiquitous hardiness maps and gardening advice. This handsomely printed volume in full color is a pleasure to browse through. Finally an arrangement of trees and shrubs that makes some sense, instead of the haphazard (read alphabetical) arrangement encountered so often. Although the authors wisely avoid the trap of involving themselves in the morass of common names they definitely miss a trick by not giving the etymology of the botanical names. It is quite odd to see a laurel-like picture of Daphniphyllum and not be able to read that "daphne" is the Greek word for "laurel" with "phyllus" the Greek for "leaf"

Of course trees and shrubs is too big a topic to fit within the covers of a single volume and it is not surprising to notice that the authors occasionally drop the ball and make quite silly errors. Obviously it would be too much to expect anybody to be fully informed on the whole range of plants covered.

Perhaps the most noticeable thing missing from this work is light. Quite a lot of the trees and shrubs included here have dark green foliage and in the pictures not much detail can be made out. A bit more light in photography would have made quite a difference.

All in all this is a book that will look good on the bookshelf and will be appreciated by anybody who is fond of trees and shrubs and is not afraid to look beyond the confines of the own garden. ... Read more

Product Description

Botanical Serigraphs: The Gene Bauer Collection features serigraphs and narrative text from handcrafted, limited-edition booklets about arboreta and gardens throughout the state of California. As an avid member of the California Garden Club in the seventies, Bauer dedicated herself to creating a series of booklets to capture the experience of touring gardens found in the club's districts. With a mission to better acquaint people with gardens in the area, Bauer created sixty-one issues of these booklets, which she mailed to club members. Botanical Serigraphs was made possible because original recipients and collectors of the booklets returned them to Gene after her personal collection of booklets was destroyed in a 1997 wildfire. Her attention to detail and keen sense for the extraordinary makes this book an excellent gift for artists and garden enthusiasts alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Restrained and passionate
Gene Bauer's quietly luscious, simple botanical silk-screen prints are exactly half of what is pleasurable about this book. And oh, the design and production is very nice, big white coated pages with the prints reproduced at maximum size, but as nice a job as ESRI Press did with her work, it's not the weight and beauty of the object that satisfies here.

No, it's Gene Bauer's writing, her uncompromising voice, her first-person story of exploration, observation, creation, and activism that makes this book impossible to put down. Her well-thought-out observations convey the same rigor and poetry as the strong, precise shapes in her art.

"Visiting the campus before, in November, I had been atracted to a vine covering a ten-foot-high chain-link fence adjacent to the garden. The fence itself, about two-hundred feet long, was protecting a rather unsightly bit of electrical apparatus, and as if rewarding it for that, the vine's lush green foliage blanketed the fence entirely. Sensational salmon-coral flowers from the vine adorned this embrace. The lustrous vine, still covered with flowers when I visited again four months later, was Passiflora jamesonii."

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Affair with Plants
Gene Bauer took chairmanships with California Garden Clubs, Inc. and turned them into pieces of art, exquisite in every detail. The essays about each plant she chose are written with passion as well as expertise.Read it from front to cover - it's fascinating!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Botanical Serigraphs:The Gene Bauer Collection
This book is a rare gem, truly a piece of art.Having been to the Daffodil Garden in Running Springs - several times - and having enjoyed the beautiful display of blooming bulbs, one time with my sister, who was visiting from Germany - it was always a delightful and rare experience.
Later, I was heartbroken, when I heard about the Fire and the Bauer's loss of their home.
How providential, that Jack Dangermond of the renowned Redlands company ESRI, along with others from his firm, took an interest in Gene Bauer's work, the Serigraphs, a labor of love, spanning over many years. The Serigraphs express Gene Bauer's love for California's native flora and I am so grateful that they were preserved in this fashion, this beautiful book, for many to enjoy.I treasure my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A strikingly minimalist yet wonderful coffee-table artbook

Product Description
All life depends on plants, but we often take them for granted in our everyday lives. It is easy to ignore the fact that we are facing a crisis: scientists estimate that one third of all flowering plant species are threatened with extinction. This lavishly illustrated volume considers the essential conservation role of botanic gardens, telling the story of how a global network is working to save our botanical heritage. Product Description

From the world-famous Brooklyn Botanic Gardens comes a unique, all-region handbook that introduces gardeners to the many beautiful native plants that thrive in tough growing conditions—with little or no maintenance. It profiles spectacular trees, shrubs, grasses, wildflowers, vines, and bulbs that naturally cope with disturbed and depleted soils, extremes of sun and shade, regular buffeting by strong winds, and other challenging environments. In addition, unlike many tough species, these don’t have invasive tendencies but support sustainable ecosystems. Written by the finest experts on the subject, this practical guide provides a bounty of information on everything from site-appropriate designs to propagation and care.
