4-0 out of 5 stars First attempt on describing boas
This book is the first one in trying to describe the living boas. The author tells in a bright way the differences between the species. Also there is a clear way of telling general things like names of scales, scalecounting, describing the habitat and so forth. I've read the book withlots of pleasure and I 've used it several times to look after some deatilsabout BOAS.

This edition of Designer-Morphs is split into two volumes due to the amount of information available, Volume one is a comprehensive guide to the mutations, morphs and hybrids of ball pythons and boa constrictors. Volume two, due out in late 2010, will cover blood pythons, carpet pythons, rainbow boas, and other boids. 4-0 out of 5 stars Children's Book Introduces Caribbean/ Central American culture
My Brother Needs a Boa is a beautifully illustrated book with an interesting theme. When Benito's store in the village is occupied by a rat, all the customers run away. The story is about Benito's search for a boa to scare away the rat so customers will return. One boa is too small and another too large, but he stumbles on a boa just the right size by accident and soon customers return to shop at the store.

The story telling is done nicely with simple to understand language for ages 4-8. Additionally the story exposes children to certain aspect of the Caribbean/ Central American culture which is under represented in English books for children.

I think this book will allow a child to see inside the decision-making process of the main character, Benito, and allow them to better understand how adults make decisions. It will be helpful to the natural development of the child while delivering a solidly entertaining story that children will ask for time and time again.

5-0 out of 5 stars But I'm afraid of snakes!
I gave this book to my six year old nephew, and he loved it so much, I bought several more of these to give as Christmas presents. This story offers us a"kid's eye view"of tropical village life, with brilliant illustrations. The descriptions in the book are also captivating. For example, in one place, the author refers to the boa moving through a store as "flowing like a thick stream of chocolate syrup."

The funny thing is that my nephew is actually afraid of snakes, and that just made the book more exciting for him to read.

I don't usually write reviews on kids' books, but this one warranted it.It's a great one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tall tales that are a lot of fun
I checked this book out from my local library and it was an instant hit with my 6 year old son, and with me too. We've read it every night for a week at his request so we're buying our own copy. The title makes it clear that this is not a typical story that tells one tale from start to end, but it's a collection of tales: the narrow escapes of Davy Crockett. It even spells out the various animals and things that the tales are about. It may not have seamless transitions, but this, for us, in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the book. The back of the title page notes that "Most of the stories and some of the original language come from the Crockett Almanacs, published between 1835 and 1856."For me, the story should be judged not just on the flow between the tall tales, but on the fact that it captures the flavor of the time period it is based on, and that it captures the imagination of young readers.I also enjoy the illustrations and think that art is a matter of personal reaction, you either like it or you don't.I recommend this book for adventurous young kids who can relate to feeling like they are the biggest, strongest, fastest, everything-est there ever was. It's a fun book!

3-0 out of 5 stars So-So Book - a review of "The Narrow Escapes of Davy Crockett"
"There never was anyone like Davy
Crockett.By the time he was eight years
old he weighed two hundred pounds with
his shoes off, his feet clean, and his
stomach empty."

This books starts off very promising (see above) but then flounders. For one thing, the stories run together without titles or other demarcation. After reading it through once you figure that out, but it is still an awkward and annoying feature.

For example, in describing a scene in which Davy is being hauled out of a hollow tree by a bear, the last sentence is;

The bear was sore behind, and fled before
Davy could thank it for the ride!"

This is the last sentence on the page and it is not at clear that it is the last sentence of the story. The next sentence on the following page is; "Davy was exhausted, so he sat down, rested his head in the fork of a young tree...."

Sounds reasonable that ole Davy might be tired after wrestling with a bearBUT it is a different story.Arggh.

Three Stars.[C-] Artwork not so good.Stories run together and are not in the clearest prose.Three stars because I have not found another text that offers any of these tall Americana tales which I think are valuable for young children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book super pictures
I got the book for my toddler so she could see more pictures of snakes. It also has great info about them and is easy to read even for younger children. She enjoys hearing all about them as she's looking at the pictures. Snakes aren't evil, gross, slimy or mean they are a very necessary part of our planet. If it weren't for snakes we'd be overrun by rats and mice. This book shows that snakes have a very important part to play on our planet and should get some respect for the jobs they do to keep things in balance.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date, 'strange' classification of snakes and poor photos.
I am guessing that this book is just old, so not going along with todays knowledge, and this is just another edition. One definitely can find some information in it, but I did not like it. Another positive is its visually attractive issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pythons and Boas
Pythons and Boas have long been among the most fascinating of snakes, and with continued encroachment upon their habitat they are now also among the most threatened.Pythons and Boas provides an up to date look at the Boidae, with emphasis being placed on the boids as threatened animals whose futures lie with increased captive breeding by concerned hobbyists.Every genus is covered, from the largest pythons to the smallest wood snakes, with summaries of what is known of their natural history and care in captivity.A special chapter spotlights methods of breeding boas and pythons in captivity. This volume includes the only available modern checklist of the species and subspecies of living boids, as well as a simple key to the genera.Heavily illustrated, with 111 color photos and numerous black and white illustrations and maps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a new snake owner, great overall coverage.
This is great for a beggining pet owner. It has over 100 color photos of different types of snakes and also pictures and diagrams of afflictions. It covers everything from history, nomenclature, care and breeding. Thereis even a guide to help you determine what type of snake (proper name andorigin) you have.Since this is a book on both boas and pythons, itdoesn't spend much time or detail on either.Perhaps it's only shortcomingwas that there is not much, if anything about IBD (Inclusion BodyDisorder)that I have found in other books. Also, there was very littletime spent on treating any of the diseases, except how to recognise them, and generally how they are treated.Otherwise, this is a great referencebook and good reading for those that wish to know more about boas andpythons. ...
