Product Description
They're slithery. Some are dangerous. But they're all fascinating. Snakes combines excellent vivid color photography and interesting, entertaining text that details the lives of a variety of snakes in an enlightening, and often amusing, book.

In non-technical language, David Badger presents fascinating snake lore from across the centuries and describes everything from the physical traits and reproductive habits of snakes to territorial behavior and life span. Samplings of general "snake facts" are highlighted throughout, along with literary quotes on snakes from noted authors such as Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, and Annie Dillard. Featuring 100 full-color photographs--of everything from garter snakes, rattlesnakes, and vipers to cobras, pythons and anacondas--by renowned nature photographer John Netherton, Snakes also includes an intriguing appendix that explains how he managed to capture specific photos. For reptile and nature fans and pet snake owners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snakes are awesome!
This is one of three awesome herp books that photographer John Netherton and writer David Badger collaborated on.It's such a pity that Mr. Netherton passed away when they were working on their third book, the lizards volume, since they probably would have produced equally great books on newts and salamanders and turtles and tortoises, the other two major herp groups they hadn't done yet. This particular book is loaded with beautiful photos of snakes, and lots of great information on them. There's information on, to name just a few subjects, snake photography, the importance of snake conservation (many people might have an irrational fear of them, but they have to admit that snakes do humanity a very valuable service through natural pest control), our relationship with snakes throughout history, families and species, snakes in literature, reproduction, vision, skin, hibernation, locomotion, and thermoregulation. There's also a wonderful two-page spread in the middle of the book, giving common and scientific names for a whole lot of different snakes.

Snakes featured in the photographs include the North American rough green snake (one of my new favorite species of snake after reading about how fascinated the specimen was by Mr. Badger's rotating screen saver), pigmy rattlesnake, tiger rattlesnake, king cobra, Western green mamba, two-striped forest pit viper, eyelash viper, monocled cobra, mud snake, kingsnake, milk snake, corn snake, ring-necked snake, Columbian rainbow boa, and Burmese python. There are so many amazing snakes I learnt about through this book, both venomous and non-venomous, dangerous and docile. There were also some surprises, such as the story behind the docile king cobra, whom the zookeeper described as very sweet, not the image at all that most people have of such a snake. This book should be recommended not only to people who already love herps, but also to people who are open to learning more about the wonderful world of snakes. These fascinating creatures deserve our respect, admiration, and protection, instead of being feared, hated, and killed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snakes, snakes, snakes!
I thought this book was excellent for the most part. The photos were AWESOME, and really makes a person realize the true beauty of snakes. The snake profiles and fun facts were supurb, and I personally learned a lot. This book is an excellent read for those who want to learn more about the wonderful serpents of the world. ... In the past decade, there have been considerable advances in the understanding of badgers, particularly the social behavior, ecology, and population dynamics of the European species. Badgers synthesizes the extensive knowledge which now exists, and makes available to naturalists, conservationists, professional scientists, and the general reader what has previously only been available from scientific papers. It provides an up-to-date, easy-to-read understanding of these fascinating animals and includes a final chapter on other species of badgers worldwide. In addition, a number of new illustrations have been incorporated, many in color, as well as more useful tables and new artwork which was specially commissioned.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD INFO FOR BADGER LOVERS
You will find alot of useful information about the badger of Great Britian.Lots of good photos and tidbits for reports and essays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you a lot about badgers
I bought " Badgers" as a gift for my toy badger. She's called Deanna and she looks like a real badger. And I have watched " Wildlife SOS" on Animal Planet and they had to put to sleep the badger called Ci Ty. Otherwise, cool magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book by the world expert on badgers!
With all the "politics" about badgers in the UK, it is not easy to get unbiased information. This book provides a wealth of factually-accurate data, and lots of illuminating anecdotes about many many years of badger watching. Whilst it 'aint the cheapest badger book, do not be deterred by the price; as it is absolutely worth every single cent!
Truly the best book about badgers. It combines in-depth factual information with the authors experience and many illuminating anecdotes about badgers and their nocturnal behaviour. It is a book that every-one who studies or deals with badgers should read from cover to cover, and keep on their shelf for reference. ... Read more
