Extractions: Teaching Specialties Peter Goodrich came to Northern Michigan University in 1984 as a literary generalist and technical writing instructor. Before joining the NMU faculty he studied Anglo-Irish literature at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; taught at the German universities of Mainz, Marburg, and Kassel, at Quinebaug Community College in Connecticut, and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His scholarship has primarily explored the figure of Merlin in Arthurian legend through all literary periods and genres. Extractions: The legend of Arthur continues to be one of the most compelling tales in Western literature. Even if one has never read an original Arthurian romance or chronicle, one may know the story of Arthur, Lancelot, and the Round Table from movies, TV, children's books, novels, and comic books-or, perhaps, through sheer cultural osmosis. We will read the major Arthurian texts of the Middle Ages, survey the question of Arthur's historicity, and indulge in the pleasures of the medieval vernacular romance as we examine the cultural construction of romantic love-as a recognizable emotional state or condition, as a medical and legal issue, and as a process that shaped social, economic, and political relations through marriage. In addition, we'll explore the form and function of the various retellings of the legend of Arthur in the Middle Ages (as in the remarkable 13th-century French Roman de Silence , about a young girl raised as a boy) and beyond, in the works of selected 19th- and 20th-century writers, painters, filmmakers, and musicians. Requirements: one oral report on an Arthurian film, two short papers of 5-7 pages each.

Here then, is a brief and very opinionated introduction to the central texts in a discussion of Celtic Arthurian literature. Following the introduction is a brief annotated bibliography listing a few of the primary sources, that is the Arthurian texts themselves (usually in translation). Next is a list of some introductory resources, and finally, a few secondary critical analyses with a Celtic bent. Don't overlook the many excellent Arthurian web sites , and in particular do visit the Arthurian Literature Basic Reading List created by Judy Shoaf, the Arthurnet list moderator, with suggestions from various Arthurnet list members, and most especially Tom Green's Arthurian Resources site. Earlier towards the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, there was a strong current in Arthurian scholarship that seemed to find a Celtic source for every conceivable element and aspect of the Arthurian mythos. Though there are still proponents of Celtic origin theories, they are much less unilateral in their approach. The problem is that there are huge gaps in our knowlege, and in the extant manuscripts, making supporting evidence for Celtic origin and influence theories hard to come by. We have the same problems of missing manuscripts in most of the other areas of Arthurian scholarship. Generally, current scholars tend to agree that the Celtic materials, especially in Welsh, are important analogues, and may provide a guide to the way the Arthurian legends were transmitted. Extractions: Defined as "narrative, written in prose or verse and concerned with adventure, courtly love and chivalry," Arthurian romance derived the narrative verse form from 12th-century France. The anonymous 14th-century English romance "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is the most widely recognized example of Arthurian romance. Although little is known about this poet, who we may refer to as the Gawain or Pearl-Poet, the poem seems fairly typical of Arthurian Romance. Here, a magical creature (the Green Knight) has challenged a noble knight to a seemingly impossible task, in the pursuit of which he meets fierce beasts and the temptation of a beautiful woman. Of course, the young knight, in this case Gawain, displays courage, skill and chivalric courtesy in overcoming his foe. And, of course, it seems fairly cut-and-dried.

Extractions: The chivalric code was slipping away even in the 14th-century when the anonymous Gawain-Poet was putting pen to paper. By the time of Sir Thomas Malory and his "Morte D'Arthur" in the 15th-century, feudalism was becoming even more obsolete. We see in the earlier poem a fairly realistic treatment of the Gawain story. As we move to Malory, we see a continuation of the chivalric code, but other features demonstrate the transition that literature is making at the end of the Medieval period as we move into the Renaissance. While the Middle Ages still had promise, it was also a time of great change. Malory must have known that the ideal of chivalry was dying out. From his perspective, order falls into chaos. The fall of the Round Table represents the destruction of the feudal system, with all its attachments to chivalry.
