Comprised of one great long valley and the low-lying mountains that flank it, the Okanagan starts at the centre mark of the shared border of British Columbia and Washington State (USA). The valley stretches northward for about 200 miles from the town of Osoyoos to Vernon. Two major lakes, Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake run down the centre of the valley with many other smaller lakes adding to the beauty. Blue Mountain overlooks spectacular Vaseaux Lake which is surrounded by a protected wilderness preserve. The winery is located about 45 minutes from the Canada/US border near the small town of Okanagan Falls. From Vancouver, it's about a five hour drive to the area. The nearest town with major air access is Penticton, about 30 minutes north of Blue Mountain. The Okanagan is a popular vacation destination year-round. In summer, favourite reasons to visit include water sports of all kinds, houseboat vacations, hiking and cycling. Many British Columbians make the Okanagan an excursion to buy farm-direct produce. Summer daytime temperatures are generally in the middle to high 20's Celsius (high 70's/low 80's Fahrenheit) and can peak in the low-30's (above 85). Mountain elevations cause fair drops in night time temperatures which helps to enhance the flavour development of the grapes.

Extractions: The Electronic Atlas of the Flora of British Columbia An initiative of the Native Plant Society of British Columbia, the University of British Columbia Herbarium and the Spatial Data Lab, Department of Geography, University of British Columbia. The preparation of an atlas of the plants of British Columbia was first conceived several years ago by members of the Native Plant Society of British Columbia. The idea was revisited in early 2002 when a series of coincident factors propelled the idea forward. It was decided to develop an interactive on-line atlas of BC plants that will make detailed information on distribution, taxonomy, ecology, biology etc. of our species publicly available for education, research and conservation purposes, similar to on-line atlases that are available for other regions. The aim of the atlas project is to be cooperative, comprehensive and inclusive, drawing upon the expertise of field botanists, plant growers, photographers, researchers, naturalists and others throughout the province. While the work will initially center around the specimen database of the University of British Columbia Herbarium, it is hoped that we can expand this to include other detailed provincial databases, and databases already online elsewhere in North America, such as CalFlora. Programming will be developed to allow the E-Flora databases to "talk" to other databases in order to compile dynamic information on a given species at any point in time.

It is Canada's third largest province and comprises 9.5 percent of the country's total land area. The province is nearly four times the size of Great Britain, 2.5 times larger than Japan, and larger than any American state except Alaska. The province is bounded by the U.S. states of Washington, Idaho and Montana in the south, Alberta on the east, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon on the north and Alaska on the northwest. From south to north, B.C. stretches 1,200 kilometres, and from east to west, as much as 1,050 kilometres. Its deeply indented, island-dotted coastline extends 7,000 kilometres. The province is blessed with an abundance of waterways in the form of rivers, lakes and streams. Freshwater surfaces total 1.8 million hectares. Major river systems include the Fraser, Columbia, Skeena and Peace Rivers. Climate The climate of British Columbia, varying from marine to continental, is determined by prevailing westerly winds, the warm Pacific Ocean, mountainous topography and the province's northerly location. The coastal region has abundant rainfall and mild temperatures associated with a marine climate, and enjoys Canada's longest frost-free periods. In the interior, the climate is continental in nature. The southern interior has the province's driest and warmest climate.

The main aim of this project is to study the sea-level histories of selected areas along the British Columbia coast using diatoms and testate amoebae. This is part of a wider project involving other researchers investigating sea-level and climatic changes along the coast of British Columbia. Several research cruises are planned over the next two years to sample shallow coastal basins and lakes via core collection. Detailed analysis of sediment cores, utilising sedimentology and microfossils at selected sites will be adopted to plot sea-level curves for the Holocene period. Several inlets east of Queen Charlotte Sound have been selected for research because limited data currently exists for relative sea-level change in this area. Research in this area would be valuable as it would provide a link between detailed studies completed by other researchers further north and south of the selected study area. Changes in sea-level along the coast of British Columbia have resulted from a combination of three factors: isostasy, eustasy and diastrophism. The late Pleistocene and Holocene history of the British Columbian coast includes as its dominant theme: ice advance during the Fraser glaciation, deglaciation and a complex relative sea-level history.

Vancouver Island's west coast is rained on frequently as a result of the coastal layout, which gives it a temperate rain forest climate. Because of this, the island's west coast has the oldest and tallest trees in Canada: Douglas firs 90 meters high and Western Red Cedars 1,300 years old. The Cordillera From British Columbia to the Alberta border the land is rugged, agressively styled with mountains and plateaus. Here the Rocky Mountains, the Coastal Mountains and other ranges run north to south. Canada's highest peaks are in the St. Elias Mountains, an extension of the Cordillera that reaches north into the Yukon and Alaska. The British Columbia interior is topographically convoluted, it varies from alpine snowfields to massive valleys where hot and dry conditions are typical.
