1-0 out of 5 stars Aviation Weather Incomplete!
I was excited to find this book available in a digital edition; however, what a total let down it was when I actually opened the book and found many important figures missing. There should be a disclosure statement regarding the fact that the digital edition is incomplete. I feel that I have been ripped off! This is bad business!! I wish there was a way to get my money back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy conversion led to complete let down
I was really looking forward to this book. But, entire figures are missing, the OCR presumably didn't work in some areas, and footnotes are cut off, not to mention being spaced in between paragraphs.I understand there must be some constraints when converting a book created for the analog world into a digital format, but for only two dollars less than the paperback, I feel completely ripped off.It is more work to try to figure out what this edition is trying to say than it is worth the money.Frankly, this is a safety issue to some degree as this book is about effectively reading weather for the purpose of aviation. Here's an example. If i really wanted to understand wind shear, i might be interested in the figure accompanying the text. The figure description is included, but the figure is missing.Maybe this is only an issue for the Kindle software, but if I could return this purchase, I would, because I simply won't finish this title in Kindle.Very sloppy conversion led to a complete let down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of Knowledge But Needs Better Editing

Great review of what the FAA wants you to know about weather and what you need to fly in weather or know it time to sit on the ground. Writing and editing would improve the value of the product.

For a govt written resource it is great and the price is right.

For less than 1/10 of the $100 burger it deserves a place on a pilot's bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students
I used this some time ago when I was getting my license and it really helped me understand what i needed to know to pass my test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old book
I am sure this information is relevant and maybe not much has changed but this book was was printed in 1975 so the graphics reflect that.Overall, easy to understand. It seems helpful at this point. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
This book is now out of date - replaced by AC00-45G in February 2010.
The new book is available here on Amazon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
It is what it is and that is not a lot more than the standard FAA text on the subject. If you want a complete one for the bookshelf, here it is.Is it the kind of thing you refer to daily, no.But as a reference to look through every 6 - 12 months and your a pilot, can't do anything but help.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Version
The Aviation Weather Services Handbook is a commercial reprint of the AC 00-45E published by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Weather Service. It is outdated now.The new and updated AC 00-45F was published by the FAA & NWS is dated October 1, 2007 and is available for download on the FAA and NWS web sites.I'm sure a commercial version of the new edition will be available soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Same as 1999 edition
Except for a new cover and font, this is word-for-word identical to the 1999 edition. There's no need to upgrade.Eight years and not one thing in weather services has changed? At least the publisher could have updated the maps!Like most FAA products, it is extremely dry reading, but if you want the facts with a minimum of fluff, it's a good resource. ... Product Description
The primary purpose of Aviation Weather and Weather Services is to provide you with an up-to-date compilation of all the FAA's weather publications in one easy-to-read and easy-to-understand reference book. This book is largely a reformation of the FAA's Aviation Weather (AC 00-6A, published 1975) and Aviation Weather Services (AC 00-45E, published December 1999), but other ACs (advisory circulars) are covered as well.

We provide 100% coverage of all the material in the FAA's Aviation Weather and Aviation Weather Services. We have presented this information in our outline/illustration format, which completely explains and illustrates all of the concepts from the FAA's books. We use the same figures (including color), charts, and graphs to help you learn and understand aviation weather. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Weather & Weather Services
Great book!A necessary supplement to the usual pile of pilot supplies issued for both fixed-wing and rotorcraft aviation students. Most helpful was the expanded explanation of those weather reports cited by the PTS which we can never seem to find a good ledger for, i.e., Weather Prognostic, Convective Sigment, Radar Summary, Area Forecast, etc.Now I am confident my explanation of weather reports will not be an issue on my checkride day! ... Product Description

Often when I write a book review the reader is able to deduce from the way I write it, whether or not it is an item which I truly believe is exceptional, or just something which is here simply because it is "supposed to be". This is one of those exceptional books and although it is a little more expensive than other weather books, it is truly a good example of getting what you pay for. This 3rd edition of Aviation Weather is Jeppesen at its best. It is also, without a doubt, the best and clearest book on weather as it pertains to pilots that I have seen.

Aviation Weather is designed to help the student of aviation understand their atmosphere in which he or she operates. It also serves as a valuable reference source for pilots at all levels. Whether your connection to flying is as a new student, a certified pilot, controller, dispatcher, scientist, engineer, or an interested passenger, Aviation weather will help you understand the strong interdependence of aviation and meteorology through over 300 full color illustrations, a minimum of mathematics, and a maximum of practical information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Practical???
This book was full of theory. Theory is important up to a point . I got all of the information contained in this book in a cheaper book Aviation Weather and Weather Services (Gleim)
Practical weather was contained to small paragraphs in the last chapter of the book. As an instrument pilot I found the very little information on the actual flying aspect. Classroom oriented, certainly not cockpit oriented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aviation weather finally presented in pleasant format.
As a student private pilot it's easy to get too much dull information in front of you that must be sifted through to find practical pearls.Aviation Weather by Peter Lester comes closest of the many sources forweather information out there that gives relevant and beautifully formattedinformation in a succinct presentation. It's hard to make METAR and TAFabbreviations readable to a new student, but this Jeppesen book trys to atleast tie them in with all the other weather information available, andshow many different sources available to pilots for their preflightbriefing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Especially for Those on East Coast
A great book that explains weather and how to fly in it very well.It should be noted, however, that it targets East Coast and Mid-West weather patterns, which are quite a bit different than that for the West Coast where I live. Still, it is a worth while read for any pilot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weatherwise
Richard has an accessible way of writing and this book is easy to read (but takes a while to digest!).Some information is tedious and requires more than "Weather Channel" knowledge, but may be supplemented by many of the free books at www.faa.org.I recommend it to all my flight students, as weather knowledge is usually more deficient than we all would like!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fine text from RC
I've always been a Richard Collins fan -- even when I was 11 and bought "Flying" magazine off the drug store rack and pored over every article -- understanding maybe 15%.

The percentage is higher now, but I still need to read and re-read to fully comprehend all the material presented.

The chapter on Lows is worth the price of this book. Every IFR and VFR pilot should buy and read this book. If you find you don't understand half of what Dick is talking about, it's time to go back to the basic Aviation Weather texts and get up to speed. Nothing is more critical to GA flying safety than the PIC's complete understanding of the Weather picture before launch and during flight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a briefing and fly IFR with more confidence
This is one of the best books that I've come across.Richard L. Collins does a great job of covering the basics of weather and what is really going on in order to build on real useful knowledge.Once he completes that, Richard takes you on 40+ actual flights where he talks about the briefing that he got, what the weather is really like and what the NOOA maps showed after the flight (since they always look at the past).

You learn more than just about weather. You learn about how to work with FSS, what to ask, and why forecasts are sometimes so different than actual when they shouldn't be.After reading this, I felt a lot more confident about my IFR weather planning and flying and look at the weather with a whole new mind set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weather Simplified
Finally, a book about weather in plain English.Unlike every other book I read on weather, the author keeps the subject very interesting. There is also answers to long-standing questions about flying in weather that no one ever dared answered that are in this book.A must read for every pilot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This product is same as described in purchase. Delivery was very quickly and good conditions. I recommend this product and provider. Sincerely. Jose Pena

4-0 out of 5 stars Talks about nasty weather in a simple way.
This book is for the weather novice who doesn't want to get a PhD in meteorology, but still wants to stay out of trouble. While most of the information about thunderstorms is available elsewhere, his section on icing was particularly valuable. I would recommend this to any pilot who seems lost about weather reports or charts. If you know your way around surface analysis charts and lifted index charts then this book might be too simple for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unreserved praise!
For all pilots!I purchased this book over ten years ago and I try to reread it each spring. This book condenses need to know information into useable "bites," and makes weather interesting and understandable. You will learn things about temperature dew point relationships and many other aspects of weather and weather flying that you may never hear any other place. If you are looking for a book that will better prepare you for the dynamics of weather flying, this is one of the very best.

5-0 out of 5 stars severe weather flying

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference on basic meteorology as it relates to aviation
I have very much enjoyed reading this book by Terry Lankford. I find myself frequently opening this book for clarification on how forecasts and observations are used in real-world aviation/weather situations.Terry provides numerous examples from his years of experience as a weather specialist and flight instructor. His writing style is clear and concise.Obviously, he has a firm grasp of official standards adopted by the FAA, NWS, and WMO, but he presents the information in a manner that is much more enjoyable to read than most manuals on standards from either of these organizations.I highly recommend this well-written book for anyone interested in general meteorology, or for young pilots wishing to learn more about the impact weather will have on their chosen profession. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pilots need this
I am a flight instructor and used this book to learn about what the FAA offers to pilots in the way of weather services. It explains the coding for their shorthand weather reports very well and was exactly as advertised. The book arrived in new condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book has been superseded by AC 00-45F
This item has had a major update by the FAA, and has been republished by ASA (Aviation Supplies and Academics).Amazon does not yet carry it, although it's been available for several months. The current version, if you want it, is on the FAA web site and is labeled AC 00-45F. The update addresses many of the concerns I expressed in my review of the previous version (below).
______________

The old version, AC 00-45E, was very comprehensive but...This volume looks like the old software manuals that were written by programmers rather than by technical writers.Lots of detail but laid out poorly, and some of the explanations left me thinking, "Huh?"

Unlike Aviation Weather, which was obviously written by people who loved what they were doing, Aviation Weather Services looks like it was written by people who simply wanted to be done with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying America Weather
Greatreference book for students who are pilots, dispatchers, andmeteorologist. This book explains the different regional weather patterns of the United States. It's not too technical nor scientific, however, basic knowledge of meteorology is helpful.I found the book most helpful after watching the Weather Channel, and being able to understand why the weather is doing what its doing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy regional weather guide for general aviators
This well-organized volume breaks down the U.S. into 17 distinct regions, including states whose weather is characteristic enough to justify theirown chapters (Alaska, Hawaii, California, Texas and Florida).Horne, anexperienced pilot, accomplishes something unusual for anyone, scientist oraviator:He explains meteorological terms and weather events instraightfoward, example-laden ways which should be easy for any worthypilot to comprehend, and cites scientific references for further reading. In the regions where they are most common, various weather phenomena (e.g.,downbursts, hurricanes, derechoes, tornadoes, rotors, fog, icing, squalllines, snowstorms, extreme heat and cold, and more) are made relevant tothe pilot through plainly written explanations, combined with historicexamples of their roles in aviation incidents. While memorizingdefinitions to pass the FAA knowledge exam may be enough to get one'slicense; this book takes the pilot an important step beyond by allowing himto *understand* the weather behind those terms on the test. The onlysignificant flaw is the liberal use of website addresses, many of whichwill change during the several years this book resides on library shelves. Still, Horne'sbook should be in every general aviator's library. ... Read more
