1-0 out of 5 stars Requires online subscription
This product could be great, but to access the information required for students to complete the tasks, you need a paid subscription to the publisher's online database. If you really wanted to use these activities I suppose you could compile your own resources for each one, web-based or otherwise, but that sort of defeats the purpose of these DBQ compilations in my opinion. Subscription requirement should have been in the product description. If your school already subscribes to Greenwood's Daily Life Through History, then this might be worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful worksheets - skip the quizzes
I used several of the worksheets from this book while teaching Huck Finn to my juniors. Each worksheet covers 3-4 chapters and one term or technique (satire, dialect, setting, narrator, tone, details, character, theme). It's a good way to introduce these, or to check for understanding. The worksheets also had enough detail that a sub used two with success while I was out. I gave it 4 stars because the questions on the quizzes and final test seemed like random facts, and most did not go deeper into analysis. There is, however, a good resource at the back with ideas for projects and essays. I would use this book again, and I would buy other products from Secondary Solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a Word, Wonderful
Make no mistake, this is a tremendous teaching resource. As a busy teacher I have little time to prepare such material. There are numerous exercises to be found in this teaching packet, all of which are relevantto a higher understanding of the novel. Kristen Bowers should be commended for her work at Secondary Sources. I forsee great things for the company.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've seen!
This guide is really helpful. The Great Gatsby is such a tough book to teach and I have struggled to teach the novel without good materials.I have made up quizzes and tests for the novel that don't come anywhere close to these.Plus, the vocabulary reinforcement with worksheets throughout that give the students extra practice with test-taking skills is great!I cannot wait to start the year anew. ... Product Description

Florentine painting between Giotto and Michelangelo contains the names of such artists as Orcagna, Masaccio, Fra Filippo, Pollaiuolo, Verrocchio, Leonardo, and Botticelli. Put beside these the greatest names in Venetian art, the Vivarini, the Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, and Tintoret. The difference is striking. The significance of the Venetian names is exhausted with their significance as painters. Not so with the Florentines. Forget that they were painters, they remain great sculptors; forget that they were sculptors, and still they remain architects, poets, and even men of science. They left no form of expression untried, and to none could they say, "This will perfectly convey my meaning." Painting, therefore, offers but a partial and not always the most adequate manifestation of their personality, and we feel the artist as greater than his work, and the man as soaring above the artist. ... Years have passed since the second edition of this book. But as most of this time has been taken up with the writing of my "Drawings of the Florentine Painters," it has, in a sense, been spent in preparing me to make this new edition. Indeed, it is to that bigger work that I must refer the student who may wish to have the reasons for some of my attributions. There, for instance, he will find the intricate Carli question treated quite as fully as it deserves. Jacopo del Sellajo is inserted here for the first time. Ample accounts of this frequently entertaining tenth-rate painter may be found in articles by Hans Makowsky, Mary Logan, and Herbert Horne.

Product Description
Of Ammianus Marcellinus, the writer of the following History, we know very little more than what can be collected from that portion of it which remains to us. From that source we learn that he was a native of Antioch, and a soldier; being one of the _prefectores domestici_--the body-guard of the emperor, into which none but men of noble birth were admitted. He was on the staff of Ursicinus, whom he attended in several of his expeditions; and he bore a share in the campaigns which Julian made against the Persians. After that time he never mentions himself, and we are ignorant when he quitted the service and retired to Rome, in which city he composed his History. We know not when he was born, or when he died, except that from one or two incidental passages in his work it is plain that he lived nearly to the end of the fourth century: and it is even uncertain whether he was a Christian or a Pagan; though the general belief is, that he adhered to the religion of the ancient Romans, without, however, permitting it to lead him even to speak disrespectfully of Christians or Christianity.

Teachers, Homeschoolers, ESE Teachers this is a must have ifyou teach Eng/Lit or reading. Everything you need and for an added bonus purchase the movie. Everything you need for teaching literature or reading is here. Background knowledge, above and beyond engaging activities and discussion materials. The Blackline Masters and extended activities including vocabulary, questions, assessments, writing exercises, literature/story elements and answer keys. Quality lessons for Eng/Reading classes both MS and HS. I used this with High Maintenance students (IEH) which included a mixture of low/high reading/writing levels not to mention emotional disorders. The students enjoyed this and we watched the movie. The students and I had fun naming the know actors:Tom Cruise,Patrick Swayze,Diane Lane,Rob Lowe,Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid), Emilio Estevez and S.E. Hinton(I didn't know this)played in this movie. Students were amazed of this books timeframe, the authors story and the relevance of this story in spite of it's era. Educators don't pass this up. Use it the first semester or end of the year and experience success! <><

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For English Teachers
This literature guide really saved my life this year. My job switched just a week before the school year began, and I ended up teaching a different class and grade level than I expected. I had a rather "tough crowd" of students. Many of them had reached 8th grade without ever reading a novel. Since I had several at-risk students, The Outsiders was a natural choice of a book to teach, but I had NO lessons or activities to go with it. I used this for the vocabulary lessons, quizzes, and tests mostly, but it had additional activities. I wish it were a bit more extensive, with more ideas for projects and creative writing, but considering the price, I found it very beneficial. I've purchased literature guides for 3 or 4 times the price of this one, and they weren't nearly as helpful. I highly recommend this one! I've even recommeded it to colleagues and a couple of parents that are home-schooling their kids.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful!
I am disapointed with this, because I was expecting something a lot different. There was hardly any literary analysis - just a little on theme (1 page only), and characters. There were, however, good chapter questions, and LOTS of vocabulary work.Which was completely irrelevant.Overall - if you are intending to study "The Outsiders" in order to complete vocabulary type work, rather than a proper literary analysis, then this book would suit you. Also, I was annoyed to find out that additional material had been made since this book was published, but I had to download it from the internet, and print it myself.I think the publisher should have added this new material to a new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Teacher's Heaven
What a great resource! From the author biography, to pre-reading activities, to literary analysis worksheets, to vocabulary activities, I am so pleased with my purchase.I am going to be starting school in a few weeks and cannot wait to use this with my students. It really makes me feel more confident entering my first year of teaching.I have lesson plans already done for me!What a gem!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Resource
This literature guide was recommended to me after I had tried using the Teacher Created Materials version.Let me tell you--making paper dolls and recipes are NOT what my students are being tested on!Once I got this literature guide I threw all my other stuff away--this really has everything you need to teach the entire novel. My kids have always loved this book, but now that they have activities and things to really stimulate their thinking, they love it even more.VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!In fact, I just purchased Among the Hidden--I will let you all know how that guide is when I get it.I can't wait! ...
