5-0 out of 5 stars Applied Math for Food Service
I really appreciate buying my text books from Amazon this way. You can really save a lot of money when purchasing and make better money when selling. My professor turned me on to this book to help me figure out how to apply the math for recipe conversions, yield factors, measurement conversions, food cost percentages, etc.... Math has never been one of my better subjects, therefore this book spells it out very easily.

2-0 out of 5 stars not worth even half the price
This author doesn't do a very good job of explaining concepts, and does not give enough examples. When you convert a recipe to a larger number of servings and end up with 2.9375 cups of something, would you really measure 2-15/16 cups of something? Would the average food service student know whether to convert that to ounces, or even how to convert a decimal to a fraction? Even my instructor hates this book and is looking for a replacement. I wouldn't be so bitter if I had only paid $5, which is what this book is really worth!

5-0 out of 5 stars Paperback a positive choice.
I initially wasn't sure about ordering a paperback book. I didn't know if the pages would match up to the hard cover book my professor used but it does. I enjoy the paperback more because it was cheaper to purchase (a plus for any college student) and it weighs less than the hard cover, which is always nice to carry around a lighter backpack. Hope this helps your purchasing decision!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts.. and little else
The book provides good reference information with regard to the basic price/yield equations, but John Martin gives short shrift to any discussion of the finance theory behind them. It is not just an academic issue since many instruments will trade a premium or discount to the prices implied by the basic equations.

Go with the classic: Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives (5th Edition) -- by John C. Hull.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple explanation of derivatives valuation done on Excel
I agree with the Mr. Phillips about this book merely presenting the basic valuation equations, but I think that is the beauty of this book. Notice the title made a reference to this book beeing intended for 'non-quants'. However this book still provide 'quants' a valuable reference guide when one needs to brush up on the mechanics of a given derivative valuation.

This book is written from a risk-management practitioner point of view and as such it goes in great length in not just showing the different valuation models, which include most of the models in practice, but also the working mechanism of the specific securities market, and the associated exchange and clearing house settlement procedure. The key strong point of this book is that the author wrote every section of the book with conciseness and to the point. Each instrument's characteristics are presented, the associated equations are explained, and the spreadsheet models are shown in detail (included with the accompanying disk). After reading the book one is left with the feeling that finance is really this simple, involving setting the appropiate model to go with the relevant parameters,

One point regarding the editing: it was simply a great pleasure to browse this book. The clean layout of the book, the consistent sequence of presentation of the materials for all the instruments, and the detailed explaination of each of every equation (all the equations all the cells are shown) allows the reader to follow and comprehend the material with ease.

The contents of the books: market mechanism, valuation and model of interest rate forward, foreign exchange forward, equity forward, interest rate swap (the author is really an expert in these types of intruments, showing models of single-rate bond valuation method, simple offset valuation method, zero-coupon yields bootstrapping, zero-coupon yields: forward rate reinvestment, futures strip swap pricing, forward rate offset valuation method, zero-coupon valuation method), cross-currency swaps, equity swaps, equity options, interest rate options, currency options. The disk includes major valuation models of all the derivatives.(most requires just Excel 4.0 version)

Update: Since this book was published over a year ago, many other fine derivatives books have been published. However its straightforward simplicity still makes it a valuable part of a risk manager's personal library. One minor objection even at [...]its list price it is still priced a tad [...] for an introductory/intermediate level textbook. Anyone more quantitative-oriented, might want to check Cuthbertson's Financial Engineering and Risk Management. Comes with software and real life application examples. ... Read more

Product Description
"The subject of integrated navigation systems covered in this book is designed for those directly involved with the design, integration, and test and evaluation of navigation systems. It is assumed that the reader has a background in mathematics, including calculus. Integrated navigation systems are the combination of an onboard navigation solution (position, velocity, and attitude) and independent navigation data (aids to navigation) to update or correct navigation solutions. In this book, this combination is accomplished with Kalman filter algorithms.
This presentation is segmented into two parts. In the first part, elements of basic mathematics, kinematics, equations describing navigation systems/sensors and their error models, aids to navigation, and Kalman filtering are developed. Detailed derivations are presented and examples are given to aid in the understanding of these elements of integrated navigation systems. Problems are included to expand the application of the materials presented.
The third edition includes additional background material, exercises and software. The added material includes: development of general form for Earth's gravitational potential with simplification to an ellipsoid model; development of satellite orbital equations for position and velocity and the impact of non-spherical earth gravitation on satellite orbital parameters; and illustrations in the development of derivative free Kalman filters including the Unscented and Divided Difference filter forms.Additional exercises are included that expand and supplement the material in the text and demonstrate properties of the Kalman filter.Additional software is included in this edition for simulating random processes and derivative free filter implementations.
This edition provides a more complete foundation for addressing the different aspects of integrated navigation systems." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall a decent book, but lacking in several areas
This book is probably the best one in the field of inertial navigation, but unfortunately, that isn't saying much. It is probably the most comprehensive of the books I have read, but still lacks full explanation and derivation.Like many other books on the subject, the notation used dates from the 60's and needs to be polished up to modern notation(how about bold face vectors and Matrices for starters).

The most confusing part of this book is that the many of the symbols are recycled and/or are inadequately explained. This means extra effort is required to derive or infer what they actually mean. Many of the key Matrix equations (Fig 5.2) should have a breif explanation below them so that the reader doesn't have to spend 30 minutes going through the text to determine symbol meanings.Additionally, the difference between perturbation and alternative form are inadequately explained, forcing the reader to find IEEE papers for better description.

As mentioned, this book is probably the most comprehensive on the subject and can almost stand alone (emphasis on almost).Someday somebody will publish the ultimate Intertial navigiation text!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
The book is very precise and gives a lot of mathematical related things that's relevant to Navigation and Guidance. I somehow liked it's approach, mainly because it avoids a lot of descriptory jargons and talks straight in mathematics: the language of scientists and engineers! Before reading the book, a good hold of the mathematics related to system theory would be a definite plus. However, the book has an introductory chaper for the relevant mathematics too.

Product Description
Math for Health Care Professionals is a comprehensive resource that is equally effective in the learning environment or for self-study. It is foundational and assumes no prior knowledge of mathematics or health care but merges the two topics into the capstone of a complete learning package.Designed with clearly defined objectives that allow the user to select the competencies that the group or individual needs, each objective is clearly stated then explained within the book and accompanied by a significant number of practice problems. Critical thinking skills, rather than rote memorization of formulas, are emphasized. By using pretests printed at the beginning of each chapter each users work can be assessed to determine areas of weakness and helps develop skills within these weak areas. In the Math in the Real World feature, health care professionals relate to readers, in their own words, the importance of math in the health care professions. While the fundamentals of mathematics are foundational to this book, their application to health care is emphasized. Drug dosages, intake and output, weights and measures, temperatures, IV drip rates, and conversions are emphasized and illustrations of syringes, prescriptions, medication labels, IV bags, and I and O charts allow the reader to practice real-life health care skills requiring mathematics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Household
This book is like that first lick off a chocolate mint ice cream cone or the feel of the ocean breeze on your face ; you just gotta experience it first hand to know why I purchased over a dozen copies for every household of my nieces and nephews, friends who help their children with math homework, K-12, and to a middle school math teacher to remind him how math can be taught quite simply with meaning andenjoyment.

This book ought to be next to thatdictionary in every household. It covers concepts from addition to Trigonometry in the most learner/reader friendly way. This book covers all subjects at the most practical level. You won't need to purchase books on various math topics, they're all here. And I didn't thinkI'd chuckleor laugh, learning about math.

Recently a math book for girls was released. What?Technical Book for Dummies doesn't perpetuate that myth about girls being less teachable or capable. This book addresses all people as learners, thus respecting all learners without indulging in gender myths.

I grew up hating and fearing math and avoided all math courses beyondbasic math. This book changed everything. The difference is the humorous and patient voices of the authors. It's as though they knew they had to be delicate, uncomplicated with their language and funny to hold my attention before they could help me rid myself of past fears. This they did, without a touch of intimidation.

I highly recommend this book. You just gotta read a few pages to know why I compare this to an ice cream cone. Besides, I like authors who have confidence in their work. I've been promised that if I can't balance my check book after the chapter on checkbooks, one of the authors will personally come to my door to balance my checkbook for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Math Disaster Not Averted
It's a commonplace observation that the better the mathematician, the worse he or she generally is at balancing a checkbook. It's not a paradox: simple arithmetic is just too boring to hold a bright, abstract thinker's attention. So perhaps this can account for what happened in Chapter 10, "How Math Can Fix the Economy." In the table titled "The S&P Tulip Index, 1975-2007," the author looks at the ratio over a period of years of the year-end closing price of the S&P500 to average household income. Unfortunately, he used REAL (inflation adjusted) household income instead of CURRENT household income. The S&P500 closing prices, of course, are in CURRENT dollars, so the ratio, to make sense, has to be CURRENT dollars to CURRENT dollars.

I immediately noticed something was wrong when I saw in the table that average household income supposedly rose only 40 percent from 1975 to 2007. In fact average household income rose 391 percent in CURRENT dollars! (I used the same Census Bureau spreadsheet as the author, but the correct column -- "Current dollars.") With this correction in place, the "S&P Tulip Index" isn't nearly as exuberant at the 1999 stock market peak: a ratio of 4.10 instead of the author's ratio of 16.29.

There is also a conceptual problem with the author's "S&P Tulip Index." It doesn't take into account population growth. If the number of households doubled from 1975 to 2007, you might reasonably expect the S&P500 to double as well, even if average household income stayed constant.

Sadly, the same mistake of REAL versus CURRENT dollars afflicts the next table too, "The Average Home Price Tulip Index, 1975-2007."

1-0 out of 5 stars Someone should have check the math.
I got this book from the library, have read as far as page 14, and will go no further. Here the author's example is about car insurance. In his example he can buy a $100 deductible policy for $300, or a $500 deductible policy for $220.He assumes that he buys 10, 6 month policies in 5 years and has 1 accident in that time.He concludes that the $100 deductible policy will save him $32 a year!He states that he would save $80 buy buying the $100 policy for 9 of the policies (this is backward as the $100 policy cost $80 MORE then the $500 deductible policy), and loses $400 on the tenth policy (wrong again). This is exactly opposite of what happens. The $500 deductible policy saves you money. With the $500 deductible policy he would save $80 every 6 months on the premium, for ALL 10 policies, and then lose the $400 on one policy.(He ignores the fact that you must PAY for insurance even when you have an accident so the $80 needs to be multiplied by 10, not 9).

The correct calculations are:
The $100 policy for 5 years(10, 6 month policies, with one accident) will cost $300*10 + $100 = $3100
The $500 policy for 5 years(10, 6 month policies, with one accident) will cost $220*10 + 500 = $2700
He would save $400 over 5 years, or $40 per policy by buying the policy with the higher deductable, the $500 deductable!!

I can't read a book that gets such a simple example WRONG in the very first chapter!Did anyone check this book?

4-0 out of 5 stars An Odd Mixture (3.5 stars)
Despite the word "math" in the title, this book is more oriented towards arithmetic, as pointed out by the author. Basically, it contains a variety of well-thought-out applications of simple arithmetic. Each of the fourteen chapters contains a different topic - and the topics are indeed quite varied, resulting in a rather odd mixture. The topics are so varied that a given reader is likely to find some much more interesting than others. In my case, I found many chapters quite entertaining, many informative, some even quite captivating, and others, well, rather boring. As a result, I find this book rather difficult to rate. The writing style is very friendly and includes several personal anecdotes; it is certainly most authoritative, often engaging, but, as noted, chapters of little interest to the reader may be found to be quite dull. As a result, the target audience is unclear. There are chapters on football strategies, different forms of gambling and even one (one of the longest) on how to teach arithmetic to elementary school children. On the whole, I believe that there is something of interest in this book for just about everyone, e.g., a few gamblers, maybe football fans/strategists, perhaps elementary school teachers and, possibly the odd math buff. However, I don't think that everyone who reads it will enjoy all of it. As a result of all of this, and for my own personal taste, I would give this book 3.5 stars, rounded to 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY a MATH book worth the money!
Now, you are probably thinking, "Why should I BUY a MATH book!?" Well, spend the bucks on this one. The first few chapters alone will make it worth your penny. Jim has done a GREAT job with this book; it is an easy read and gives sound advice in simple-to-understand verbiage. This isn't your average math book! Nope, not at all...trust me, I think this one has merit and should be used to TEACH math! You can't go wrong with the no-nonsense approach to using arithmetic (yep, finally using all that math from school!!!) so instead of asking, "Why do I need to know how to do...?" now you will know the why and can put that knowledge to use. Excellent job! Great read! Everyone should get this book, teachers (especially MATH teachers) notwithstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Financial advice, relationship advice and more - from math?
James Stein has written a book with exceptional value. If all 18 year olds would read this book through (though the math would tell us that most won't), they would be richer, happier and safer for the rest of their lives. Just reading chapter 1 and chpater 9 is guaranteed to make you wealthier. From the decision to continue your education to whether a refi is right for your mortgage, the answers are here. The author's Tulip Index is also very revealing about the housing crisis and how it could have been avoided had the value of homes not been so lopsided against the household income.

My favorite chapter, being a lover of math and a father of four children, was chapter 11, Arithmetic for the Next Generation. In this chapter, the author gives advice on how to keep kids interested in math, how to describe the purpose of arithmetics and simple teaching techniques related to Monopoly money. Overall, an excellent read. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite the seemingly close connections between mathematicsand other scientific and engineering fields, practical explanations intelligible to those who are not primarily mathematicians are even more difficult to find. The Dictionary of Applied Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists fills that void. It contains authoritative yet accessible definitions of mathematical terms often encountered in other disciplines. There may be bigger dictionaries, more comprehensive dictionaries, and dictionaries that offer more detailed definitions, theorems, and proofs. But there is no other dictionary specifically designed and written for scientists and engineers whose understanding and ability to solve real-world problems work can depend upon the application of mathematics. Concise, comprehensible, and convenient, the Dictionary of Applied Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists is a practical lexicon that helps students and professionals alike use mathematical terminology correctly and fully understand the mathematical literature encountered in their fields. ... Product Description
Nonlinearity plays a major role in the understanding of most physical, chemical, biological, and engineering sciences. Nonlinear problems fascinate scientists and engineers, but often elude exact treatment. However elusive they may be, the solutions do exist-if only one perseveres in seeking them out.Self-Similarity and Beyond presents a myriad of approaches to finding exact solutions for a diversity of nonlinear problems. These include group-theoretic methods, the direct method of Clarkson and Kruskal, traveling waves, hodograph methods, balancing arguments, embedding special solutions into a more general class, and the infinite series approach. The author's approach is entirely constructive. Numerical solutions either motivate the analysis or confirm it, therefore they are treated alongside the analysis whenever possible. Many examples drawn from real physical situations-primarily fluid mechanics and nonlinear diffusion-illustrate and emphasize the central points presented.Accessible to a broad base of readers, Self-Similarity and Beyond illuminates a variety of productive methods for meeting the challenges of nonlinearity. Researchers and graduate students in nonlinearity, partial differential equations, and fluid mechanics, along with mathematical physicists and numerical analysts, will re-discover the importance of exact solutions and find valuable additions to their mathematical toolkits. ... Product Description
Systems of partial differential equations reflecting conservation laws hold significant relevance to a variety of theoretical and practical applications, including compressible fluid flow, electromagnetism, elasticity theory, and other areas of continuum mechanics. This field of nonlinear analysis is currently experiencing a marked increase in successful research activity. The EU-TMR network "Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws held a summer program offering short courses on the Analysis of Systems of Conservation Laws. This book contains five of the self-contained short courses presented during this program by experts of international reputation. These courses, which address solutions to hyperbolic systems by the front tracking method, non-strictly hyperbolic conservation laws, hyperbolic-elliptic coupled systems, hyperbolic relaxation problems, the stability of nonlinear waves in viscous media and numerics, and more, represent the state of the art of most central aspects of the field. ... I will give five stars for this really good book. This is the best math book written for chemists, which I know.

In each chapter of this book after really good introduction you can find plenty of really good and properly chosen exercises to practise, which are really helpful in studying.

Simply, Really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful texrtbook
This is such a good book for those that need the extra help formulating and understanding what is being taught in Chemistry. A very beneficial book.
Every University should have this text book in their library.

4-0 out of 5 stars I good book to recall my mathematics
i haven't learned math for several years and this is a good book for me to recall them and also give me new knowledge relate to chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chemistry Maths Book
It is hard to find a book that covers this material and this is a great book for anyone needing extra help with the math portion of chemistry

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Bible"
If you are an undergraduate (or even post-grad) student in any of the physical sciences then the best book you could ever buy for getting on top of math would have to be this book. Having come from a shaky back-ground in math ( it used to be my worst subject and my pet-hate) the book laid out the theory and the knowledge requisite for most, if not all, the theory behind physical chemistry. In fact this book is better than any undergrad math text I have ever come across and it's a special treat for the chem student because he goes over things you learn without really knowing why and he reinforces things later on- he really does build on concepts so that you don't forget them a week later. He also makes the subject interesing with little anecdotes and such- but not the type you come across in your standard highschool text with a grey drawing of a dead bloke in a bedsheet. In short this book is the bible for any student wanting to do a chem major and succeed in research- it's all you know you need and all you won't know you'll need til after you've read it. ...
