5-0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent.
I highly recommend this book for all those who are involved in raising funds for animal welfare non-profits.It is comprised of short and concise chapters written by seasoned experts on the vital aspects of this topic.Additionally, there is a very useful list of resources (websites, books, organizations, etc.) at the end.Currently, I'm using the techniques and strategies discussed in the book to assist the Board of Directors of a local animal shelter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic book from the HSUS!
This book covers every aspect of fundraising. 5-0 out of 5 stars Shelter Dogs...Another Great Peg Kehret Book
This is a book of stories full of hope for animal lovers of all ages. Peg Kehret comes through once again with her appealing writing style for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids who love dogs!
This was a GREAT summer read for my 9 yr old - she loves dogs and LOVED the stories of the shelter dog heroes!Nice format for this age b/c she could read all about 1 dog in a reading time block rather than have to come back to it day after day.Great stories!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jamie from Lake Tapps says,"Heart warming book!"
I highly recommend the book, Shelter Dogs because it is about dogs that go to the shelter and never get adopted for months. No matter how big or little they have an interesting story like this dog named Tyler that's blind and loves to play with a kitten. You should read it to know all about these dogs and their stories and what happens to them at the end. These are real stories about real dogs and their owners and their friends.
The book Shelter Dogs is for you if you're a dog lover because it's happy, sad, and cool to what happens to the dog at the end of their story.Dogs go to a shelter called the Humane Society in Portland, Oregon because they have no home or they get abandoned by their owners. There are some dogs that become movie stars, fire fighters, or life savers. There are some dogs that panic because their owners die.Like one story, a dog named Kirby panicked because his owner got very sick and died and nobody knew little Kirby was still there. There are so many interesting stories about little dogs and big dogs from Border Collies to Great Danes. There so many stories of so many types of dogs. You should read this book even if you're not a dog lover.Peg Kehret is a wonderful author because she writes things that were true events like the book I'm telling you about right now.She went to the humane society to get information about these dogs and their amazing stories. The dogs in these stories names are Joey, Tracker, Kirby, Zorro, Bridgette, Danny, Tyler, and Ivan. These dogs are heroes to many people who have illnesses. The dogs are trained to alert their owner of any medical issues like a seizure.
My favorite part in the book was when Peg Kehret talked about Bridgette because she was a seizure alert dog.She could sense a seizure coming twenty minutes before it would happen so the person could get on a sofa a bed or any soft surface. The person Bridgette lived with had seizures.Once they were driving home from a party and Bridgette went crazy. They tried to calm her down but it didn't work so as they were driving home from the party the person driving had a seizure.
What I learned from the book is that it is good to have a dog at your side especially if you need them like if you're handicap, or you have trouble walking.
I would give this book five stars because the stories about these dogs are truly amazing and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal Lovers
Any animal lover who wants to make a career with animals should get this book. It doesn't tell naything about salaries or anything stupid or unessacary like that. People who only care about salaries shouldn't become anything that involves animals. I personally want to be a small animal veterinarian and I could care less about money. I would work for free just to be with animals. Get this book if you have a dream of working with animals like me. You won't be able to put this book down till you know everything!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Star Thrower
I don't want to detract from the inspiration this book obviously provides but was sad to see that she has adapted Loren Eiseley's Starfish story as her own - and appears to have given no credit. Eiseley's original can be found in his book, The Star Thrower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking for those who cannot . . . . says it all!
There are no words to fully describe the depth of this book's scope in such relevant context of shelter work! The writing is excellent, the overall aura and ambience provides insight, inspiration and aspiration toward the goals encompassed in these stories!Every individual encounter in this volume will capture your emotions with hope and a desire to be a part of similar endeavors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touched my heart
This was a wonderful book, especially for shelter workers or volunteers who see and experience some of the same things as in the stories. Many of the stories dealt with the euthanasia side of shelter work but end with ahopeful note. The book stresses the importance of spaying and neutering andnot treating companion animals as throw away objects but as importantmembers of the family. I recommend this book highly for animal lovers andam even considering buying a second copy and donating it to my local humanesociety's new library.

Love this book, the pets are beautiful & one can tell the owners love their pets. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL AND LOVING BOOK!!!!!
Must admit that I am probably biased since my daughter,Dina Dembicki, was involved in the "making" of this beautiful tribute to the drivers and their "kids". Having seen what it takes to put it together makes me appreciate it all the more.Dina spent 12 to 18 hours a day doing the layout and putting the book together. As the Design and Print Production, Graphic Arts person, she spent every moment loving this book. Ryan and Krissie Newman are not only wonderful human beings and loving "pet parents" they are generous with their time and aid for all living animals. The Ryan Newman Foundation is responsible for the Catawba County Humane Society's new housing facility for which this book donated all net proceeds to the new building construction. These are the kind of folks who can be assured to make it to Heaven!!This book is now in it's 2nd printing thanks to all animal and NASCAR lovers who bought one.My thanks to them and everyone else responsible for making this book such an astounding success.By the way, Krissie is even prettier than her photo!

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite a tale but it still needs work
I've really enjoyed the process of writing, rewriting, finding editing and proofreading and, finally, personally designing the covers for two self-published, or indie, print-on-demand books of fiction. It's also given me a lot of sympathy for others who try to finish the long and tricky process with a product of more than ordinary merit.

J.B. DiNizo has quite a tale to tell in this first effort, but it's mostly all tell. At least in the beginning, which is where I got bogged down. There's too much tell, not near enough show. I skipped around after that. Towards the end, especially, the police chief's voice was intriguing. But the story really needs more scenes and dialogue, interspersed with the unrelenting narrative summary and expository quotes, to compel a reader to stay until the end.

The author's personal experience of child abuse (see author's page link above) seems, of course, to be reflected in the story. I'm sure its words were lived with and in for a long time before they arrived in this cathartic form. Now the author should find the courage to do a careful rewrite and find or hire an editor. A second edition, perhaps? That's the beauty of print-on-demand: starting over when necessary. It would be a shame to waste so much obvious passion and commitment. And I'd be happy to try again. ... Every city/county animal shelter should have this as required reading. This includes those run by Humane Societies or other animal related organizations.

2-0 out of 5 stars grand idea
I wholeheartedly support this conceopt but his numbers are off by about a factor of 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn the truth, America
Too many groups are using our natural love of animals to get money and do not care about animals at all. These groups pretend to want to champion the safety of animals but kill them at the same rate of shelters that do not care at all. When people learn the truth, they can also find out how they can help protect saveable animals. Twenty-five percent of saveable animals that are killed in shelters are purebreds.Learn and then advocate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware the Big Guys
The "Humane" Society recently boasted about donating $3.3 million to American shelters.Big deal. They take in more than $120 million annually (much from celebrity commercials and deceptive appeals) and show assets of more than that.

ASPCA has one shelter in NYC that is currently withholding pain meds from animals, postponing new volunteer admissions and is short on food.See what they take in, what they pay their leaders.

Investigate the number of animals that HSUS, PETA, and ASPCA KILL.Where is one spay/neuter clinic that any of them have established?

Small shelters do the actual heartbreaking rescue work that they take credit for.Give them your money and time.

Google Charity navigator and Nathan Winograd for more disturbing facts.

3-0 out of 5 stars An once of prevention.........
So I am interested in this book and will be looking for it at my library. I have not read it nor have I read all the reviews, but of the ones I have read, no one has mentioned what I think to the best solution to pet over-population; SPAYING and NEUTERING!I have been in animal rescue for the last 22 years and would say that based on what I've seen the only possible way to help unwanted animals is to stop making them. I don't care if you have some Eukanuba, AKC, rare as hell show winning pet FIX IT! Or simply don't breed it! As they say to people, abstanance is 100% effective! I am sorry if I offened someone and yes I love puppies too but even purebred dogs end up as "unwanted", let alone all the "accidantal" liters that people let happen because they either A) are selfish and want puppies to sell or just cause its fun. or B)are to f-ing lazy to spay their pets. Yes I know it expensive and vets should charge less but if you can't afford to fix your pet, quite frankly you can't afford to have a pet.

Anyway just thought I would add my two cents to the over-population disscussion. ... Read more
