Editorial Review Product Description An enormous, superbly illustrated book revealing the astounding diversity of Alabama's fishes through brilliant color plates by Joseph Tomelleri and incredibly detailed information from the authors. Boschung and Mayden are two leading scientists of biodiversity. Boschung , co-editor of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Fishes, Whales, and Dolphins and Mayden, author of over 100 papers on fishes, and editor of the landmark publication Systematics, Historical Ecology, and North American Freshwater Fishes, have dedicated years to documenting the evolutionary histories, diversity, diets, growth rates, reproduction, sizes, distribution, and status of Alabama's fishes, and they present this wealth of information in a helpful, user-friendly format. The identification keys to the species are beautifully illustrated with extremely helpful drawings that provide fast, accurate identification, useful to experts and the general public alike. The book was origionally published in the mid 1970s, so some of the information about put in and take out points is out of date. The rivers and streams themselves have changed very little, so the detailed maps in the book will give you a blow-by-blow description of what to expect on you adventure. While there is a lot of information about the Cahaba River, none of the other Alabama rivers and streams are neglected...the Cahaba River is just a great river to canoe, and it rightfully claims an appropriate amount of space in the book. I purchased this book before I ever baught a canoe, and it has helped me to enjoy trips down the Cahaba Rive, the Sipsey Fork, the Little Fork, and the Mulberry Fork to name a few. If you own a canoe and live in Alabama (or are just interested in the subject), BUY THIS BOOK.
The only problem with this book is that many of the road mapsare outdated. Some put ins and take outs are no longer accessible whilemany areas now have better ins and outs than those in the book. And manyroad names have changed since the book was written. Despite being a littleoutdated, maps are still very helpful, espcially when used along with amore detailed topo map. Of course, the river maps pretty much still applybecuase many of the rivers haven't changed all that much. This book willhelp you find new places to go and will help determine distances of trips.Anybody who goes canoeing in Alabama should own this. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Celebrating the people, techniques, and artistry of a traditional craft. Based on 20 years’ research and experience with potters and their wares, folklorist Joey Brackner presents a definitive, comprehensive survey of folk potters and the folk pottery tradition in Alabama from the early historic period to the present. Illustrated with hundreds of color and black-and-white photographs, the book examines much admired and sought-after ceramics (such as crocks, face jugs, bowls, churns, and garden pottery) appreciated the world over for their originality, beauty, and utility. The book’s publication coincides with a major exhibition of Alabama folk pottery curated by Brackner and set to open at the Birmingham Museum of Art September 30, 2006. This volume places historic Alabama pottery making into a national and international context and describes the technologies that distinguish Alabama potters from the rest of the southeast. It explains how a blending and borrowing among cultural groups that settled the state nurtured its rich regional traditions. In addition to providing a detailed discussion of pottery types, clays, glazes, slips, and firing methods, Alabama Folk Pottery presents a geographic survey of the state’s pottery regions with a comprehensive list of Alabama folk potters, historic and contemporary—a valuable resource for collectors, scholars, and curators. Most important, in the pages and photographs of Alabama Folk Pottery, Brackner introduces—largely through their own words—the dynamic communities and families of Alabama potters who have carefully and proudly passed on their methods and styles from generation to generation. As Mobile archaeologist Greg Waselkov declares, “Alabama Folk Pottery reveals the humanity behind the artistry and the technical sophistication of this historic craft. Starting with magnificent ceramic churns, jugs, braziers, and grave markers found today largely in museums and private collections, this book pieces together the story of the talented men and women who have transformed Alabama clay into objects of great functionality, beauty, and personal expression.” Customer Reviews (3)

I thought the book was interesting, and easy to read.It is veryshort, so don't look for too much detailed information. The thing I likedmost were the battlefield vinettes that General Battle describes. Irecommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about how thesoldiers and leaders of Lee's army viewed the war.
Cullen A. Battle the author , Col. of the 3rd Alabama and then a brigade commander fought inall of the major engagements of the Army of Northern Virginia from SevenPines to Appomattox. This book does not only go into detail about thecampaigns in which Battle was involved but it also puts them into a properhistorical context. With the use of context you are able to learn not onlyabout the role of the 3rd Alabama and Cullen A. Battle, but you are alsoable to learn the fates of both sides during any of the campaigns coveredin the memoir. The book includes six excellently detailed maps of thepositions of the 3rd Alabama in various engagements. The maps also depictsurrounding brigades and the Federal opponents that they faced off with. These maps are a very crucial part to this book for they give a visual aidof Battle's memoir. I think that Beck and his cartographer should begiven a great deal of credit for making this memoir available to the CivilWar community. It is definitely a must for everyone to have on theirbookshelves! ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Alabama rivers and waterways are home to the largest and most diverse population of freshwater mussel species in the nation, roughly 60% of U.S. mussel fauna. The Mobile River Basin, which drains portions of Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi waterways, also contains diverse mussel populations. However, many of these species have been significantly depleted in the last century due to habitat alteration (river damming, channelization, siltation), pollution, and invasive species, and many more are in imminent danger of extinction. The authors offer encyclopedic entries on each of the 178 mussel species currently identified in Alabama and the Mobile River Basin—the scientific and common names; a morphological description as well as color photographs of the shell appearance; analysis of the soft anatomy; information about ecology, biology, and conservation status; and a color distribution map. With an extensive glossary of terms and full index, plus additional material on the archaeological record, a history of commercial uses of mussels, and the work of significant biologists studying these species, this volume is a long overdue and invaluable resource, not only for scholars of aquatic biology and zoology but also conservationists interested in the preservation of ecological diversity and protection of inland environments. |

Editorial Review Product Description Whereas other studies have focused on George Wallace’s career as a national figure, Stand Up for Alabama provides a detailed, comprehensive, and analytical study of Wallace’s political life that emphasizes his activities and their impact within the state of Alabama. Jeff Frederick answers two fundamental questions: What was George Wallace’s impact on the state of Alabama? Why did Alabamians continue to embrace him over a twenty-five year period? Using a variety of sources to document the state’s performance in areas including mental health, education, conservation, prisons, and industrial development, Frederick answers question number one. He cites comparisons between Alabama and both peer states in the South and national averages. Wallace’s policies improved the state, but only in relation to Alabama’s past, not in relation to peer states in the region or national averages. As a result, energy was expended but little progress was made. To answer the second question, Frederick uses the words of Alabamians themselves through oral history, correspondence, letters to the editor, and other sources. Alabamians, white and eventually black, supported Wallace because race was but one of his appeals. Stand Up for Alabama shows that Wallace connected to Alabamians at a gut level, reminding them of their history and memory, championing their causes on the stump, and soothing their concerns about their place in the region and the nation. Jeff Frederick examines the development of policy during the Wallace administrations and documents relationships with his constituents in ways that go beyond racial politics. He also analyzes the connections between Wallace’s career and Alabamians’ understanding of their history, sense of morality, and class system. “Stand up for Alabama” was the governor’s campaign slogan. Editorial Review Product Description Ollie Miss is a folk novel of Southern backwoods and rural, poor black life in Alabama's recent past. The novel serves as an important social record of a past society, time, and circumstance that would evolve into an era of social change, namely the civil rights movement. Ollie Miss is also a love story that speaks of personal loneliness and the need for fulfillment in a young black woman, poor and ignorant, and unattached. It is a story of Ollie Miss's personal struggle to "become" a person in her own right, to be independent, and to find some small measure of happiness in life. Customer Reviews (1)
