Product Description

Searching for your Alabama ancestors? Looking for historical facts? Dates? Events? This book will lead you to the places where you'll find answers.

Here are hundreds of direct sources--governmental, archival, agency, online--that will help you access information vital to your investigation.

Tracing Your Alabama Past sets out to identify the means and the methods for finding information on people, places, subjects, and events in the long and colorful history of this state known as the crossroads of Dixie. It takes researchers directly to the sources that deliver answers and information.

This comprehensive reference book leads to the wide array of essential facts and data--public records, census figures, military statistics, geography, studies of African American and Native American communities, local and biographical history, internet sites, archives, and more.

For the first time Alabama researchers are offered a how-to book that is not just a bibliography. Such complex sources as Alabama's biographical/genealogical materials, federal land records, Civil Warera resources, and Native American sources are discussed in detail, along with many other topics of interest to researchers seeking information on this diverse Deep South state.

Much of the book focuses on national sources that are covered elsewhere only in passing, if at all. Other books only touch on one subject area, but here, for the first time, are directions to the Who, What, When, Where, and Why.

Robert Scott Davis, a professor of history at Wallace State College in Hanceville, Ala., is the author of more than twenty books, including Requiem for a Lost City: Sallie Clayton's Memories of Civil War Atlanta and Cotton, Fire, and Dreams: The Robert Findlay Iron Works. ... Read more

This is an index to 9,000 wills filed and probated in Alabama between 1808 and1870. A project of the Alabama Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, it wasoriginally compiled at the suggestion of the Department of Archives and History of the State ofAlabama. The actual compilation was undertaken by a team of DAR chapter and statecommittees and is based on wills filed in the Department of Archives and History. The indexitself is a model of simplicity, giving, in alphabetical order, the name of the testator, the countyof probate, the identity of the record source (usually a will book), the date of the book, and thepage number; in sum, all that the researcher might require in securing further information fromthe original records. ... Product Description
This is really two books in one. The first part, originally published by Col. Saundersin a series of newspaper articles between 1880 and 1899, is a compendium of genealogicalandbiographical sketches of the early settlers of Lawrence County, Alabama and of Alabama itself.Based on first-hand accounts as well as the author's encyclopedic recollections, it offers glimpsesof people and events that are otherwise beyond the reach of our present-day resources. Avowedly "popular" in approach, it is nonetheless a unique and invaluable record of Alabama'searliest settlers.

The second part of the work, compiled by Col. Saunders' granddaughter, contains detailedgenealogies of nearly 100 Alabama families. Compiled from a multitude of original records, aswell as approved secondary sources, these genealogies usually commence with the immigrantancestor and progress through a chain of descents down to representatives of the line in themid-nineteenth century. They are replete with biographical detail and are often preceded by a listof everyone of the surname mentioned in early court records. The following is a list of some ofthe families treated in this section: Baldwin, Bankhead, Banks, Bibb, Billups, Blair, Cantzon,Clark, Clay, Coleman, Cox, Donohoe, Dubose, Dudley, Dunn, Elliott, Flint, Fountaine, Foster,Fry, Gholson, Goode, Gray, Harris, Hill, Hopkins, Hubbard, Kennedy, Lanier, Ligon, Lowe,McCarthy, McGehee, Maclin, McMillan, Manning, Maury, Moore, Mumford, Oliver, Ormond,Poellnitz, Ray, Richardson, Saunders, Shelton, Sherrod, Shorter, Speed, Swoope, Tait,Taliaferro, Thompson, Tillman, Urquhart, Walthall, Watkins, Webb, Weeden, Wells, White,Withers, Wyatt, Tates, and Young. ... Product Description
Over the past two decades, in workshops and personal consultations, thousands of persons have have received the expertise and knowledge of author Frazine Taylor about Alabama genealogical research. Now in her book, Researching African American Genealogy in Alabama: A Resource Guide, Frazine provides the information and guidance to help locate the resources available for researching African American records in archives, libraries, and county courthouses throughout the state. The idea for this guidebook rose out of her lecturing throughout the country and having noticed that reference guides on African American family history resources seemed to exist for every state except Alabama. This was regrettable not merely for researchers on African American history in Alabama. In fact, Alabama's records play an especially important role in U.S. family history research because of the migration patterns of Alabama's freedmen, first to urban areas of Alabama and then to northern cities, a trend that continued throughout the first part of the twentieth century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and valuable book for Civil War Historians
This is one of Glenn Dedmondt's books of Civil War Flags of the Confederacy the others in the series include Civil War Flags of Louisiana, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

There are illustrations of the flags that Alabama Regiments flown in battle and in camp.Stories behind the flags tell of how they were made and presented to the units that fought for the Confederacy. These stories are interesting and a valuable resource to the Civil War Historian who is interested about individual regiments that fought for the Confederacy.

The regiments that fought certainly had a wide variety of flags. From the basic 1st National Flag and its varieties, to the Army Of Northern Virginia aka "The Confederate Battle Flag" that units made modifications to as well as quite unique flags that were presented by the Ladies of various towns, all these flags are shown either in illustration or in pictures. This makes for quite enjoyable and interesting reading.

Some of the flags flown met with violent ends. Some were captured in battle by Union Soldiers.Other flags were secretly secured by soldiers who would of rather been killed then give up their flags. Some of these flags that were flown in battle had their color bearers shot while charging the regiment (in some circumstances 3 to 9 color bearers were killed while flying the same flag in battle). These make interesting and tragic stories that will keep the reader way into the night-time hours looking at the flags and their history.

This series is an invaluable tool for the Civil War Researcher/Historian, as well as the "arm-chair" historian who would like to know more about the Civil War.

Highly Recommended!! ... Read more

Product Description

Whereas other studies have focused on George Wallace’s career as a national figure, Stand Up for Alabama provides a detailed, comprehensive, and analytical study of Wallace’s political life that emphasizes his activities and their impact within the state of Alabama. Jeff Frederick answers two fundamental questions: What was George Wallace’s impact on the state of Alabama? Why did Alabamians continue to embrace him over a twenty-five year period? Using a variety of sources to document the state’s performance in areas including mental health, education, conservation, prisons, and industrial development, Frederick answers question number one. He cites comparisons between Alabama and both peer states in the South and national averages. Wallace’s policies improved the state, but only in relation to Alabama’s past, not in relation to peer states in the region or national averages. As a result, energy was expended but little progress was made.

To answer the second question, Frederick uses the words of Alabamians themselves through oral history, correspondence, letters to the editor, and other sources. Alabamians, white and eventually black, supported Wallace because race was but one of his appeals. Stand Up for Alabama shows that Wallace connected to Alabamians at a gut level, reminding them of their history and memory, championing their causes on the stump, and soothing their concerns about their place in the region and the nation.

Jeff Frederick examines the development of policy during the Wallace administrations and documents relationships with his constituents in ways that go beyond racial politics. He also analyzes the connections between Wallace’s career and Alabamians’ understanding of their history, sense of morality, and class system. “Stand up for Alabama” was the governor’s campaign slogan.

4-0 out of 5 stars George Wallace & Alabama's State Government
George Wallace dominated Alabama politics for a quarter century. Consider the six elections Alabama held for Governor between 1962 and 1982. Voters elected Wallace four times and elected his wife once (when he was ineligible to run for re-election).

Wallace has been the subject of many books (such as Dan Carter's The Politics of Rage and Stephen Leshar's George Wallace: American Populist). But previous books focus on Wallace's impact on national politics. In Stand Up for Alabama, Jeff Frederick examines Wallace's impact on Alabama.

Stand Up for Alabama is a success. Frederick portrays Wallace as a governor who spent his time campaigning instead of trying to run Alabama. The book shines when Frederick explains how Wallace and Alabama's legislature interacted; the relationship was contentious and the relative power of each side shifted as voters' opinions of Wallace shifted.

The book has a few drawbacks. Conservative readers won't like Frederick's steady criticism of Wallace's opposition to tax increases. At times, the narrative bogs down when it cites reams of statistics comparing Alabama's government programs to those of neighboring states.

At 400 pages, Stand Up for Alabama requires a commitment from its readers. But politics junkies with an interest in state government and civil rights will want to read Stand Up for Alabama.
