Zoo Tycoon 2: African Adventure is the second expansion pack for the video game Zoo Tycoon 2. African Adventure, as the name suggests, is Africa-themed. Developed by Blue Fang Games, work for the game began in early 2005 for a May 2006 release. This expansion introduces 20 new animals, such as the meerkat and the pygmy hippo, and allows simple breeding between subspecies (the maasai and reticulated giraffe). It also adds several maps based on African locations, such as the Sahara desert, Mount Kilimanjaro, the drakensberg, and the serengeti. Zoo Tycoon 2: African Adventure also introduces the Jeep Liberty, as well as including other Jeep vehicles from the previous expansion, Endangered Species. Another new feature is more realistic herding and predator/prey behaviors. African Adventure is the first expansion to include live food. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating for children (and adults)
I bought this book as a gift for a young child who loves African animals. I specifically searched for a book that had many glossy photographs of African animals, and that had more pictures than words. This one is just that. The pages contain mostly pictures with captains and some actual paragraphs, but that is minimal. The pictures are very captivating, beautiful, and in no way inappropriate for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous introduction for any interested in Africa's natural wonders
For a coffee-table photo guide to African wildlife, you can't go wrong with Gerald Hinde's stunning display. It surveys the range of the continent's wildlife, offering a blend of aerial and close-up ground shots of different species and adding notes about their natural history and habitats. A gorgeous introduction for any interested in Africa's natural wonders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proudly South Africa
To be able to produce work such as Gerald Hinde has, one should understand the preparation and patience needed. A single image can be days in the making! Glancing through his book , 'African Wildlife', I manage to 'know' the artist and recognize the love he has for his work and the beautiful animals that he has captured on film. The photography shown is amazing, the editing and presentation are excellent, as is the quality of the printing, done by Struik Publishers in South Africa. I highly recommend this book for all who enjoy excellent photography and wildlife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their Eyes Shine at You
I collect African wildlife books and this one is the best because this superb photographer captures the glint in the eyes of these gorgeous animals. The character of each individual animal makes this book one to keep within reach for creative inspiration.I love the ways color, line, shape, form, and movement gallop and graze and lull across each page. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise
Before I began to read the book All the Way Home by Bookey Peek, a Zimbabwe native, I expected it to be about a family that has taken on the task of caring for the land and animals around them in a time of desperation in modern day Zimbabwe.I was both surprised and pleased when I found it to be so much more. The time frame of the book is modern day Zimbabwe with all of its problems, but that is not what the author lingers on.Instead the author focuses in on what is good and beautiful about the place she has chosen to live.
Richard and Bookey Peek were both raised in Zimbabwe and acquired a love for the country early on.Bookey left the bush she was raised in and, in hopes of finding something better, set out on her ten-year search only to find what she was looking for not far from where she left. One of the best quotes in the book from her was, "So I left, eyelashes and all, and traveled the world for the best part of the next ten years, in search of the place that I had finally found today, in the heart of my own country."
Almost every chapter is prefaced with a very appropriate quote.I found this to be intriguing at first, but later found myself looking forward to reading each of them before the chapters began. The chosen quotes prefaced the feeling and ideas of each of the chapters and put one's mind in the correct context for what they were about to read.I also truly felt at a loss when one was not present to help me begin my journey through that part of the book. The book centers around the wildlife sanctuary that they have started and the characters that are there, but it also takes you back to their journey;when they acquired the land, the work, and the sometimes comedic happenings in the Bulawayo area and Matobo Hills to be exact. However the central character of this story is Poombi, the warthog that came to live with them quite by underhanded means. The baby warthog, Poombi, was acquired in an African store. The book then weaves its magic tail of the bush, the animals, the struggles of life and the love of the area all around what seems to be an insignificant creature to begin with, with the reader discovering, and rediscovering, that nothing is insignificant and that the essential nature of the land and its people are still the same. Her descriptions of the area, the stores, the people, the animals and the land are well written and make one believe that you are right there with her.It inspires a love for Africa, for the wildlife, and for its people.Anyone who is in love with the life and animals there will be pulled through this story with a new hope for Zimbabwe and the future of its wildlife. It is her love story for the land and people of Zimbabwe that began with her life in Zimbabwe and continues still today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wild Honey, wild love.
As a lover of animals I am constantly being amazed by their intelligence and perception. Dogs that surf and save lives, parrots that talk and count, hyenas and wolves that allow you to temporarily join the pack without ripping your leg off, orangutangs and gorillas that trust us with their babies. When I hear someone mention such denigrating terms such as `dumb animal' or `they are worse than animals' when making the comparison to a gang of rapists or murderers, I wonder if they realise just how inappropriate the analogy is.Animals, generally, are good people, even the notoriously grumpy African honey badger, who thinks nothing of chasing a buffalo away from a waterhole, and if you, as a human, try to intervene in the foraging quests of a badger in the wilds, you need to be a much better tree climber than he is.But what really astonishes me is the emotional side of animals. Other than imprinting, they are capable of forming the most loyal and bizarre relationships. When Bookey and Richard Peek took on the surrogate role of parents for the orphaned warthog, Poombi and the Badger, they were probably fully aware of just how big an emotional burden they were also taking on.You can't raise animals without falling in love with them, and wild animals have a tenuous lifespan. It is worse when the animals return your love and trust, when they have learned to rely on you for their wellbeing, when they bring their young to you for approval because you are accepted as part of the family, and the heartbreak you must surely feel when disaster befalls them. It is hard then to think of them simply as wild animals. Then they are family members that you let down and feel guilty about. That is the downside of running a wildlife sanctuary, especially in the uncertain political climate of Zimbabwe, but just as in life itself, there is always an upside to make it worthwhile, and in these stories from an African wildlife sanctuary you will see that upside in abundance, see the love, care and the humour that the peaks and their dedicated African staff enjoy in the magnificent stretch of bush known as stone hills. I can't help but feel envious. You will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wild Honey - Pure Delight
I had no knowledge of Bookey Peek as an author, or the wonderful characters of Stone Hills, until I was lucky enough to catch 10 minutes of her husband Richard's documentary Honey Badger: Raising Hell. And for those 10 minutes, I was absolutely mesmerized by the cutest little fellow - purportedly the meanest animal in the world - an African honey badger called Badge.Having missed most of the movie I went on an internet hunt to find a copy, as I couldn't get Badge and his unfinished story out of my mind.During my search for the DVD, I found reference to Bookey and her two biographies - All the Way Home and Wild Honey - which are collections of stories from the wildlife sanctuary she runs with her husband.I ordered them online instantly. And I'm very glad I did.

I have so thoroughly enjoyed both books - I didn't want them to end.Bookey has such a wonderful way with words, and totally drew me into the incredible life she leads at Stone Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Zimbabwe.I fell in love with the land, its history, its rugged beauty, and of course, the animals Bookey is so privileged to share her life with.

In Wild Honey, along comes Badge to keep Bookey and her family busy. And my goodness, what a handful he turns out to be.But he quickly charms his way into their hearts. Before long, I too found myself besotted by the orphaned baby badger.Even his noxious anal secretions seemed endearing thanks to Bookey's skillful prose, which resonated with her own love and delight in the tiny cub.

Bookey's evocative style had me laughing out loud at times, and nearly in tears at others. I experienced a whole range of emotions reading Wild Honey. There was worry on occasion - like the day Badge decided to have a nap in a comfy nook nextdoor to a leopard's hideout.Fascination, as he discovered more and more about his place in the world. And wonder at the amazing relationship Bookey and her family had with the meanest animal on earth.

I revelled in my reading forays to Africa, escaping to the sanctuary as soon as I re-opened the book each night.Bookey's fabulous literary imagery is superbly complemented by Richard's outstanding artwork and photographs appearing throughout the text, so it's not hard to imagine you are right there at Stone Hills with them.Alas, with the pages turning effortlessly, I finished Wild Honey all too quickly.I am now eagerly awaiting Bookey's next collection of even more stories from her African wildlife sanctuary.

Highly recommended reading.
