5-0 out of 5 stars NPs, PAs, RNs & MDs--good clinical review for acid-base and F&E
have used this book for review for my Gen. Med. rotation in NP school--concise, VERY practical and good overview of content.carries well in your pocket, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great summary
I was surprised by the detail that this small book covered, but it explained just enough without being too much.Very good for someone needing a little more guidance through the topic of electrolytes and such.Lots of information in each short chapter and good practice questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acid Base can be straight forward
This book truly reduces the breadth of information to a manageable and understandable format.

I recommend this book for anyone needing a refresher of previously learned information, and for those that need a thorough basis for future study.

Thick as the day is long but well written!
No regrets at all - a premier resource for when time allows a chapter or two.
You can purchase with confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for some
This is a complete introduction to acid-base and fluid-electrolyte problems. Simple and yet detailed enough to answer most questions. Indispensable for the nephrology trainee and practicing nephrologist.

While this is a must read for renal fellows, its an excellent resource for both medical students and internal medicine residents. Several chapters are also available in the nephrology section of UpToDate as chapters on physiology if you just need to refer to a section of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good one
Nice book with a good description of acid base balance and electrolyte disturbances. Time spent reviewing concepts is well wort it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and easy to read
As a medical student with an interest in nephrology and acid-base disorders, this book provides a readable but rigorous discussion of the subject. Chapters are well-organized and do not have to be read in order - they are written to be independently referenced as the need arises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For All Levels
I am currently studying medicine and got this book to help get a handle on the renal system and acid-base topics.I found it easy to understand, with good detail and lots of extra information. The case studies are a great way to illustrate the different conditions.I would definitely recommend it if you are keen to get a handle on (or master) acid-base and electrolyte physiology and disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
This book is worth the money spent.I found this book after my first exam on fluids and electrolytes. My text book was a difficult read for fluids and electrolytes. This book is a good study aid after you have read your required reading from textbook. I wish I would have had it before my first fluids and electrolytes exam. This information is something every nursing student know and understand. This book explains the material in a different way than most textbooks and it has sample questions to test your understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fluids, Electrolytes review book
Perfect for what I need. I got this to help me study while taking nursing classes and going through the Banner Health program. Found that it helped me with my test scores better than reading straight from the textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise, clear, but a few test Q&A errors....
A well composed compromise between summary outline and full textbook. Well written, clear, and concise. However, I found multiple discrepancies between the end of chapter quiz questions and their respective answer + rationales. Sometimes, they were just wrong (I have verified with RNs and instructor), and at other times, the rationales were rather nonsensical. About 1 in 10 questions could benefit from additional editing. Otherwise, a nice, valuable addition to my permanent nursing study and NCLEX review collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life saver!
I took the fluid and electrolytes exam without this book and got a 70. Passed, but barely (not my style). Studied this for dreaded Acid Base and got an 88%!!! I went from a C to a B in one test!!! I definitely recommend this book for nursing students, it lays it out easy for you and can really understand it!

GET IT! You will not waste your money!!

I'm going to get the Ped's one and the leadership one. (My 2 last classes!!!! *fist pump*)

This book is amazing!!I feel like I found a savior in this book!It breaks the awful F&E and acid-base balance down so simple to understand that I feel like I know more from this book than I do from reading my text book!I highly recommend this book!!You will not regret your purchase! In fact you should just go ahead and purchase the whole series right now if you haven't already!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm missing something but ...
I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert in this field but there is no discussion of volemia in the entire text.Granted, this may be described in the text as intravascular ECF but in clinical practice the terms natremia, volemia, tonicity, and osmolarity/osmolality are used together to describe the "fluid" status of patients. So, a student could read this text but still be lost on rounds or in discussions on the topic.

The text also strongly recommends giving hypertonic saline to any patient with a sodium level of < 130 "even if there are no symptoms".It defends this by stating the benefits but doesn't discuss the risks or the need for central line placement. From my experience this is way outside usual and customary practice and can be dangerous.

"Acid-base, fluids, and electrolytes made ridiculously simple" is a much better text which includes many questions at the end of each chapter that really helped my understanding and is a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clásico

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible part of my clinical library.
As a nephrologist and educator, I can say that this is the absolute best book available for learning and teaching fluid, electrolytes, and acid base. Takes a pathophysiologic approach throughout that facilitates true understanding of the subject. Drs. Haperin and Goldstein are the ultimate clinical educators in this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for review of acid-base and electrolyte physiology.
I was very happy with this book. The acid base chapters are excellent.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best text on integrative physiology out there
This is probably one of the best textbooks on integrative physiology involving electrolytes on the market.Dr. Halperin is a phenomenal instructor and his prose makes learning interactive and interesting.Electrolytes are key to clinical medicine and surprisingly not very well understood by the medical masses. This textbook is full of examples, questions, and pearls.

The abundance of questions with thorough explanations is the strength of this book.An understanding of electolytes including urine electrolytes will be gained from the study of this text.

The target audience is really the physician with an already good grounding in acid-base disorders. It will allow one to build on past knowledge and to solidy any foundation that has already been established.I am really and truly impressed with this book and I refer to it often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate book to understand Acid-Base disorders. A must!
I have just finished reading this book. I am a second-year resident in pediatrics. This book is just * excellent *, it covers the topic effectively, it is well organized, easyto read, and it follows a logic and a thought. IIt comes with bunch of exercises to apply each unit content, and also different extra chapters for curious readers. I can't wait until read it again to consolidate this integrative knowledge. Dr. Abelow, great job!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most read classic for acid base disorder
This is an amazing book.I wish I had it when I was a medical student and in my resident years.I am now studying for my board exam. for intensive care and I am absolutely loving it!This is a great book because;
1. It is written in plain English. The author has made a very difficult but important subject very, very understandable.Everything is very well presented and all the important terms, units and formulas are well explained in a non-intimidating manner. It is pleasurable to go through each page and make studying such a painless experience.
2. It is very logical and intuitive. Each concept is very well handled and explained before the reader is allowed to proceed to the next. This is so vital as our knowledge in acid base disturbance is built upon good conceptual understanding of the basic physiology.
3. You feel like talking to a great teacher, who is patient, understanding and guiding you through every step of the way.The author seems to know exactly where you might be having trouble with the grasping of the concept and he knowns exactly where he needs to elaborate in more details. This guy knows what he is talking about and he is a masterful teacher.

Overall, an extremely well written book on a very difficult topic. Essentail reading for medical students, residents and specialist of all areas of medicine, as acid base disturbance is one of the most important foundation of good patient management.

Product Description

Most subjects in clinical physiology are difficult to understand. In a day and age where the multi-tasking health provider’s time is precious and attention span short, it is necessary to retain focus on the aspects of clinical medicine which truly matter; at the same time it is more rewarding to build up difficult concepts in a stepwise manner. Medium sized handbooks are increasingly becoming popular. The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with blood gas/acid-base interpretation. There is a strong thread of pulmonary and renal physiology running through the text; an attempt has been made to simplify concepts and explain the whys and hows in health and disease. The book is almost exclusively set out in the form of flow-diagrams/algorithms. The treatment of the subject in this format, describing processes in logical steps should make it easy for the reader to cover a difficult-and sometimes dreaded- subject rapidly. Each section has been designed for a single power point slide: this should facilitate teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars High-Yield Acid-Base (High-Yield Series)
I've read the previous version, so I'm hoping that this edition will only be an improvement. This is a great review that takes complex acid base disorders and distills them down to an easy day read. In each chapter, there is a review of the key concepts and formulas and then practice cases to illustrate application of the material. All in all, this is a great review for those who need to think and act quickly and accurately about acid base disorders (ICU, Nephrology, etc.). Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars ease of understanding
The absolute best companion to medical students, residents and attending physicians, easy, quick, comprehensive, inclusive, and guides you step by step. It was very valuble for me in teaching.
